8871908 No.8871908 [Reply] [Original]

Besides Pokemon gen 1 and 2, what are the essential game boy/game boy color games to own?

>> No.8871928

>>8871908
Final Fantasy Legends 1-3, Link's Awakening, Oracle of Seasons/Ages, Dragon Warrior 3 and Monsters, Super Mario Land 2, Operation C, Metroid 2, Megaman XTreme 1-2, Return of the Ninja, can't think of much else DESU. The GB and GBC had an assload of shovelware and shit ports. I was more into the GBA.

At the risk of sounding snarky, a flash cart. I can't really recommend owning multiple cartridges anymore unless you just love collecting (and probably overpaying for) stuff.
First reply had loads of good suggestions but neglected to mention Tetris!
I also really liked Donkey Kong '94, Super Mario Bros. Deluxe, Kirby's Dream Land 1 and 2, Metal Gear Solid: Ghost Babel, Parodius, R-Type DX, the Arcade Classics games (Centipede/Millipede was my fav) and Trip World.

>> No.8871965

>>8871928
I'd add onto that a Bomberman GB game of your choice
Adventure Island
There was a good DBZ game but I always forget if I'm thinking of GBC or GBA
Kid Dracula is good
Lufia
I liked the DK Land series but I don't think many others did.
Pokemon TCG
Mario Tennis, Golf

I'm the second reply and I was wracking my brain for another GBC game; this is it. It's really good.

Mario Tennis on GBC is a rare instance of the handheld version being way better than home console, it's much more heavy on RPG play mechanics and has an actual story to play through. As far as the gameplay goes, it also loses very little compared to home console. A tennis game does not stress hardware, so it's more or less full-featured at it. The GBA sequel is good as well.

Apologies for grabbing shit quality screens from youtube but I didn't see a good image that shows what it looks like in play, overworld and stats screen.

>> No.8872317

Nothing past gen 2 is good.

>> No.8872319

Funny thing Mario Tennis was the first thing I was about to reply and people already pointed it out. Game is straight up challenging on the good sense of it. Every opponent has their own set of strategy, there is no cheating involved. Only pure pattern recognition and evolving your play style. Think game supports different play styles but heavily favors serve and volley one.

Can you explain what these are?

Don't plenty of people recommend Survival Kids? Idk I've only ever had time to play it for like 10 minutes but it looks like Link's Awakening a bit which is appealing in itself.

I really like Harvest Moon 2. Way better than HM3, which people seem to like more, so maybe try both and tell us what you think.

MegaMan 5 really needs a DX hack. Unlike the other GB MegaMan games, 5 has unique levels, bosses and weapons rather than rehashes of the ones already available in the NES games.

Also, the Konami Collections. There're four of them, each with four DX versions of old GB Konami games like Castlevania Adventure, Parodius/Gradius and Goemon.

Finally, while I don't recall the name, I played a Ranma game for GB at some point in the 90s that was very good so I say get all of them, try them all out and report back with your opinion.

I played DKC for the Gameboy Color a shit ton as a kid. It has screen crunch (though not as bad as SMB Deluxe IMO) and the camera can be fucked when you move back and forth but it's honestly a great port considering the hardware.
