I liked how early Genesis titles (pre-candy cane design like in the OP) used non-standardized cover designs. It made esch game feel unique, and it was a cool way to tie in each developer to a unique style (Tengen had the crossed light beams, EA Sports had the two-tone look, etc). Just compare the SNES box art of Wolfchild to the Genesis one - it gives the game a different feel.

That explains why in America loose Sega carts are common while in Europe you hardly see them at all. In here, Sega kept the plastic cases in Mega Drive games until the end. The spines did change to a uniform line of blue which I'm not the biggest fan of, but still I think it fits better than the that red candy-cane design.

The black grid WAS the standardized cover design for Genesis tiles at launch, the post you quoted was the first 3rd party Genesis game (Thunder Force 2) and it adhered to that template. By the second year the 3rd party releases started using their own designs.
