Interesting, i'm in Europe and managed to get a mint condition copy of that quite easily. Passed up on one or two chances to get other copies too because I don't need more than one.

The hardest games for me to find were Ogre Battle 64 and Goemon's Great Adventure in really good condition. I only saw 2 copies of Ogre Battle 64 over several years and the first one which was sent to me arrived damaged because of the braindead way in which it was packaged. Also the US version of Silent Bomber I finally got hold of a disc only copy last year.

Wish I had gotten this. I have all the Mother games complete + a complete copy of EarthBound, but this is the one thing I regret skipping on when it was new. Only reason I didnt import it was because I already had the Famicom edition GBA Micro and at the time I couldnt justify buying a 2nd system.

Most pricey things I have are probably hardware related. FamicomBox, Sharp NES TV, Super FamicomBox, Pikachu edition Sega Pico, couple Game&Watchs, a Nintendo branded hospital unit GameCube+DVD player thing for children's hospitals, my Lost World arcade board, my full NeoGeo MVS cabinet and my Vigilante arcade cabinet. For random accessories I have a Nintendo Super System controller and gun from a Nintendo VS system.

After EarthBound, my 2nd most expensive games are probably Popful Mail on Sega CD, Zelda's Adventure on CDi and Super Tempo on Saturn. Have a complete copy of that Jetsons game on NES. Not retro, but I have Poop Slinger on PS4.

I miss when getting this stuff was a poorfag hobby for losers.(well that part is kinda the same) I have all my stuff worth dog shit if it meant going back to those days.

What makes Earthbound weird is that its price far outpaces its rarity. A complete copy is over $2000 now. But its not that rare. There were at least 100,000 of them. Granted, not all of those are still CIB and in circulation but you can find them pretty often. A less extreme example is Chrono Trigger. That game is all over the place but its still hundreds of dollars for some reason. The fucking Gamecube, of all things, is going absolutely insane right now. Mario Kart Double Dash, of which there are millions, is going for like $70. While random shit that GameStop liquidated for $15 a few years ago can go for $500. This isn't natural. A combination of Covid driving people batshit and self-dealing among WATA and sealed collectors has seriously fucked up prices across the board. A sealed Mario 64 supposedly sold for over a million dollars. That's Action Comics #1 money. For Mario 64.

Many years ago I played the rom of Splatterhouse 2 for sega mega drive on genecyst. Seemed like a pretty cool game so I got it on ebay for $10. Now its worth about $100. I did actually ruin the plastic case which tore the label but I put it into a sports talk football box and its look really nice. Don't know how badly it would affect the value.

Some games just didn't go up in value or went down. In the early 2000's Aladdin was in the higher range of sega games costing around $20, not its basically the same price.

No reason for it to be any less valuable than the NTSC version, it runs at 60Hz too.

I got a nearly perfect copy of the PAL FES version for 25€ a few years ago, they already went for 50-60 even back then. They're 200-250 now. And you still get 50Hz and the shitty dub only.
I've got a few games like this that I bought relatively cheap and later they shot up in price. For Sony consoles, everything PS1 went up 2x at least, the rarer PS2 games were already expensive, now they're insane. PS3 has been getting more and more expensive over the last two years or so. Hell, even PS4 is getting there with some titles. For the latter, I just said fuck it, I'm buying every niche title I'm interested in on release because good luck even finding shit like Gust games a few years later, not to mention the prices.
Good thing I learned Japanese too. It's nice not being limited to the insane western market. I just wish I had someone there that could get the games for me locally.

I really never price check most of the stuff I own because I'm not selling any of it, so it's more out of curiosity that I look some stuff up. Like how all the GC RE games are over $100 and I have all 6.

I like my PS2 collection that I've kept over the years. The two Ar Tonelico Limited Editons, which are my fav PS2 RPGs, are about $120ish along with a sealed copy of Mana Khemia 2 about the same price.
Suikoden V and Xenosaga 3 are more expensive than when I got them 5 years ago with Suikoden going from $50 to $150 and Xenosaga 3 going from $45 to about $240.
Rule of Rose is currently most valuable game I own that has also seen the biggest price spike since I've owned it. It was valued at $80 when I acquired it in a lot years ago and now it's apparently nearly $680 now. I can see PS2 continuing to go up as the decade marches on.

PAL PS2 is the absolute worst cause eventually you'll end up paying hundred+ euros each for certain Phoenix Games releases which are some of the worst games of all time.
If you've ever heard of the legendary purveyor of crap that is Midas Interactive, well this is the shit that Midas deemed too low class for their brand so they had to establish a completely new label for shit of this caliber.
There's more than a hundred games Phoenix published on PS2 of which less than a dozen are worth playing at all.

PS2 has the problem of scale but future PS4 collectors are going to be in even worse shape. To make it sound less crazy, most of the time these people will collect the games over the course of many years. It's not someone waking up one day and deciding they want a full DS set and hopping on Ebay to drop 10 grand at once. It's more of a hunt where you go to retro shops, flea markets, and casually pick up what you can, possibly get doubles on the cheap if you can flip them, and just be on the look out. It's a "hobby" in the truest sense. The act of accumulating the set is what brings the pleasure, not the set itself. If you spread it out over many years the cost is a lot more reasonable. Then if the last game you need happens to be $1600, sure that's "a lot" but you may have saved up for it over time. I think of it the same way I think of coffee. If I add up all the cups of coffee I buy over the course of a year it's actually pretty expensive. But spread out over that year I don't especially feel it.

That said, personally I think those larger sets are just clutter. I'd be pretty annoyed with having to deal with a thousand games no matter how cheap they are. The Wii U set is actually shockingly small. I might go for it out of shits and giggles.

To add, this is starting to become less possible these days though. Prices have gotten so wacky that even thrift stores are treating random Genesis games like they're bars of gold. Video games have become the new comic books and baseball cards, so you're not really able to casually pick up "commons" for $5 a piece like you used to. About 10 years ago you could walk out of a GameStop with 20 games for a steal if you took advantage of they're buy 2 get 1 deals and grabbed all the shit nobody wanted. That's how most people built their collections. It was really only maybe 10% of a console's library that actually cost you real money. Unless this bubble bursts those days are over.

>> No.8882897

>>8882872
The Xbox Series X may be similar. Won't be surprised if most games are digital only and the physical discs are a fraction of the library's total size. The PS5 would be similar but Limited Run Games throws a wrench into that. Microsoft doesn't allow low print runs of Xbox games so Limited Run can't publish on that system.

This is extreme exaggeration. Yes, its super scummy fuck companies that release broken shit, but the vast majority of modern titles, unless they NEED an internet connection, are and will be perfectly playable. I still play on modern platforms and have never encountered a title that needed patches to be playable, but then again i also avoid the titles that are known to be released in a broken state.

Besides that tony hawk shit, xbox stuff after 360 may be unplayable without hacks/mods since there are games literally incomplete on disc that requires online connection to get "included" content as well as stuff that apparently wouldn't even start up without a day 1 patch. Ps4 and Switch will definitely be very collectible in the future, especially indie stuff that avoids most AAA modern trash faggotry.

A $100 game will be a $200 dollar game in 3 years is what I've found - my rule of thumb is $150 is the right price.

"Millions" of people do not want to own Chrono Trigger. Nobody is saying it should be pennies. The game never dropped below $80 ever since it launched. But it's one example of many of games that increased 400% or more in a matter of two years after a slow but very steady rise over the decade prior. If you look at the trends of not just Chrono Trigger or Earthbound but all games across the board, you'll see a gradual climb and then a giant fucking spike in 2020/2021. Gamecube games went absolutely ballistic in a fraction of the time that it took famously expensive systems like Sega Saturn and Turbografx-16 to do. It's actually kind of important that it does burst because if it doesn't then the rabid speculation will do to video games what happened to comics in the 90s where the house of cards comes crashing down. Part of what would accelerate that is from attrition. Nobody is going to care about NES more than current 30-40 year olds. Exactly. I'd like to think this differentiates the coomlector from the pertinent selectionist, that doesn't procure anything for the sake of it's monetary value, rather it's intended functionality and experience.

Nice. I have the Mana Khemia 2 Alchemic Art Edition which has to be pretty hard to come by as it was sold only by Rosenqueen which doesn't exist anymore.

I'm going to bet GrimGrimoire will see a huge price spike down the line once people realize it's as good as it is. Right now it's kind of the unloved stepchild of Vanillaware, being an RTS.

I do it all, for maximum results. My sperg is off the charts. As a result, my preferences depending on the title vary. I love my flash carts for different reasons than I love my original hardware. I have carefully obtained a little bit of everything over the years, to fit exactly how I experience any given title I own, or emulate.
>The true redpill is not paying coomlector prices
This is very true. One must know how to find what they seek, without paying the price of entry. However, those that have been around for while, never have paid those kind of prices.

That's a great way to think of it. That Saturn is still my favorite piece of my collection because I can still remember how excited I was to hook it up and play it for the first time. I was in my early 20s when I got it, but it made me feel like a kid again.
I plan to look into flashcarts like the other anon mentioned, but I've been collecting Japanese for a few years as an in-between since it's so much cheaper. I still like swapping out carts and disks.

>> No.8886526

>>8886486
Collectors broadly come in two categories. The first will just buy whatever they think is valuable. Oh here's a Snatcher. There's a Panzer Dragoon Saga. There's a Magical Chase. The second type is more sensible and has a goal. They're specifically going for a complete SNES set or something. I means they don't really care about anything else as far as collecting goes. Maybe the goals change over time but it keeps them grounded and prevents random spending.

>> No.8886540

>I can still remember how excited I was
This is what it's all about. Having that feel to look forward to. Not mass consumerism for the sake of hoarding titles, never to be touched. I always reference my Genesis collection. I only have 6 physical CIB titles and my flash cart, but that's perfection for me, and checks all of my boxes until I come across a title with a superior Genesis port. Collections don't have to be room filling just for the sake of it.
>I've been collecting Japanese for a few years
This is smart because a lot of titles posses superior Japanese ports or were exclusive. This also circumvents the tard, American market, coomlector prices.

Thank you! It's a small collection and I've enjoyed every game there with the sole exception of Mana Khemia 2 which I really should unwrap it and play it. It's a Gust game and Gust in my opinion is a great game company especially in the PS1/PS2 era.
Speaking of which >>8886358 I remember Rosenqueen! Way back before NISA merged it into their own online store. Did you hang the poster up or is it still in box? What's the artbook like? I do have an Atelier Series Art Collection book which does have entries to the Mana Khemia series as shown in pic related.
Grim Grimoire I had heard good things about a number of years ago as an underrated niche game and I found the short story to be charming. Doing RTS on a console is really off-putting but having a pause function to move things across the tower map is a godsend.

I think it depends on the 3ds model. I have both an original release day 3ds and a new 3ds XL. The battery on the XL shit the bed and started bloating up to the point it was pushing on the backplate like maybe 5 years after I got it. Have a friend with the exact same new 3ds XL and his did the same. Original 3ds model battery is still fine and holds a good charge.
Maybe it was just a coincidence but eh, pretty sure they did start using different batteries for other 3ds models, and of course not all batteries are made equally.

I think what's happening with video games is there's a normie-ization going on where people outside of the hobby are starting to care about video game items because of their relevance to larger pop culture phenomenons. Actual rare NES games like Little Samson have probably hit their peak and will start to decline because only NES hobbyists will know or care about it. Meanwhile Super Mario Bros. 3 which is common as shit will probably continue to skyrocket due to fame. That Futurama game is probably in the hands of people who collect not video games but Simpsons merchandise. One theory behind the spike in prices is that outsiders to the market who may be high roller speculators of non-video game items are starting to buy up WATA graded games purely as an investment but since they don't know anything about gaming they're overestimating the value and rarity of things like a sealed Super Mario 64. And when that much money is pumped into a market all at once it's inherently destabilizing. And both WATA and Heritage Auctions are perfectly happy letting this continue because they're taking a piece of the pie. But like any artificial pump it's unsustainable since the speculators are going to want a return on their investment and much like a pyramid scheme someone is going to be stuck holding the ball since you're not going to have enough buyers ready to keep paying an infinitely increasing price. At best you'll end up with a handful of millionaires just passing the same games back and forth but if they're speculators they'll start bailing if they aren't seeing high enough returns.

So a friend of mine owns Snatcher for the Sega / Mega CD CIB and I can see its value has been steadily climbing. Juding by the eBay listings up right now, he has the most sought after release too. Some sellers are asking for well over 1000 dollars! Now my friend doesn't really care about video games at all anymore but I would like him to be able to capitalize on this situation if possible since he has always been a good friend to me and is an overall great and generous guy. He probably doesn'T really need the money since he has a well paying job but who's going to sneer at 1000 dollars, right? My question: Is that kind of asking price actually realistic? Is there even a chance of any takers with a price as inflated as this? I don't want to waste his time either with bad advice. I told him about the item's value once before a couple of years ago but back then it was valued at maybe 400 dollars or so I believe.
