Does this game have a bad camera?

>> No.8867884

The only time it is a problem is in the Igloo section of Snowman’s Land

>> No.8867887

Yes

It has an aged camera.
For release, the camera itself was fairly decent, but compared to games nowadays? It feels primitive.

its not the best
its passable though

>> No.8867947

it's honestly not bad, especially for a 3d pioneer. it's rough around the edges, but the C controls help. there were only a few spots where it was really a problem, like inside the volcano.

>>8867872
It's not great but the game is built around it in mind, so it doesn't end up too bad. You'll really only see the worst of it in romhacks.

>> No.8867962

i like it
only wish you could move it in more areas

Mario cam > Lakitu cam

Not at all. It might take some time to get used to but once you do you won’t really have a problem with it

people say yes i don't quite remember i did play it a fair amount back then. it was difficult at times but for the most part good game makes up for it. actually no fuck that the camera is fine just dont be a bitch

>> No.8867982

The camera would align itself to one of 8 positions, instead of being free-control owing to the use of the C-buttons.

Before dual-analogue controls would become commonplace and the common habit would be to align the camera behind your back to move straight forward, Nintendo's idea would be you use the fixed view-points and if there were any paths that didn't strictly align you would just use the main control stick to navigate it using angle and speed control afforded by analogue range.

I remember in that aborted Conker's Bad Fur Day let's play by the original devs they talked about how Mario 64 established cameras as being more or less managed by the environment, then eventually developers found that players just wanted to have full control over the camera themselves. I imagine the original intention was for the camera movements to look slick during demonstrations rather than any practical use.

>> No.8868072

Just play Mario 64 Plus, it fixes almost all the annoyances from the og game, camera included.

>> No.8868083

Considering the fact that Mario 64 is a really early 3D non-linear game? The camera is great and works very similarly to how a modern game would be. The camera isn't perfect (it's definitely stubborn in the later levels), but it was revolutionary for the time and ahead of most N64 and PS1 games.

>> No.8868089

It's really not that bad. I think it says a lot that when I played the PC port recently I tried the new analog camera out but eventually switched back to the original camera.

>>8867872
PC port is fine.

>> No.8868316

>>8867872
relative to now, yeah, but it's one of those things that get blown out of proportion
it's only really an issue in small areas like the igloo and maybe the maze

>> No.8868336

Honestly I love the super mario 64 camera, when you are in lakitu mode you get a nice overall perspective and know where you are going when you are running through some land, but if you need precise movement, switch to the mario camera where you will be able to easily navigate some precise platforming or whatever

>> No.8868346

It was never a problem for me. I guess now with people being used to full camera controls with a right stick someone playing it for the first time now would find it odd but the game was designed around it and it worked fine.

>> No.8868381

60% of the time it works 100% of the time.

Kind of. It is hard for me since I've played the game from release. I like it, but I know it isn't good. It is like shooting old guns. If you can hit with that, everything else is easy. (I can rape sunshine to death) that said, the is not good.

>> No.8869359

SM64's camera is pretty smart about how it follows you, shame it kind of shits itself in cramped areas and you don't really have good controller over it when you want it.

>> No.8869367

It has its problems but it never hindered me from playing or enjoying the game. A minor annoyance at most.

>> No.8869825

Better than Oot

>> No.8869850

games are only like, very recently getting to the point where the average game's camera is as good or better than mario 64's. i think people who rage at it are not trying to control it at all or something and just waiting for it to auto. sometimes you have to use it almost like it's an extra set of moves.

i don't think many of you understand how many developers did not grasp that 3d platform games needed to have player-controlled camera to a fair degree. you don't even have to play shit like bubsy to see this, try castlevania 64

>> No.8869870

>>8869850
this is not true at all unless you want to call 2006 "very recently", every game I've played since the HD era has had a functional camera system if it chooses to go the free camera route.

There were a few 6th gen games where I remember them still having camera issues (Mario Sunshine especially comes to mind) but it's been solved for a long time now.

>> No.8869919

I'm surprised people even felt the need to "fix" it

I'm playing Mario 64 split screen (so less screen real estate), and the camera seems fine to me. Learn to play.

No.
It has a camera perfectly suited to the game itself, and literally nothing else.

The camera is about as good as it could have been. But a lot of people judge it by modern standards, or worse by their experience with romhacks.
Not only does the camera not offer a seamless level of adjustment or a full range of motion, it's locked to certain points based on where you are in any of the levels (Bowser stages excluded), which means it doesn't translate to non-native level geometry like custom stages.
Obviously it could be better, but for the game its in it's perfectly usable.

this is kind of a cope answer. I just played Mario 64 normally and I experienced the camera getting stuck a ton. You can adjust to its shittiness, and objects are generally far apart enough that it doesn't obstruct gameplay too much + the game is pretty easy, but its still a pain in the ass compared to modern games. If you're doing hard shit like difficult ROM hacks or doing speedruns I can see how it would become a major problem.

>>8871603
>>8871240
nevermind I kind of misread your answer. If this is to justify it not having a bad camera I would agree, the camera is perfectly functional and when it gets in the way its a minor issue.
