time for another pc engine thread. post recent games, favorites, underrated cult classics, fancy collections and rare pickups

been kinda hooked on the shinobi port. warts and all, still much better than the master system version.

>> No.8867351

PC Engine is pretty much the last video game console I want. Wasn't it called something like the Turbographics in America, or something? And the console itself looked super ugly compared to the original Japanese PC Engine version.

With that in mind, I should probably buy a Japanese PC Engine. Is there a list of recommended titles for the system?

If you don't like shmups I wouldn't recommend getting one.

it has a fair amount of good stuff otherwise, but this is a fair take. shooters literally make up 1/6 of the library

if you like namco, taito, irem, falcom, and hudson (obviously), then the system is a goldmine

But I can play Street Fighter 2 on it, surely it can't be that bad.

It's not bad, It's a great machine and I absolutely love the PCE. I just don't think buying PCE hardware is worth the investment for 90% of people. For whatever reason the PCE and everything to do with it is a fucking fortune, I sold all my PCE stuff because it simply wasn't worth the cost to "collect". It has my favorite 8-bit SEGA ports and a great version of TATSUJIN too.

You're looking at at least $100 to buy a beat-up 6-button controller. 2-button controllers are about $50 a piece, and you can't get replacement pads if they're fucked. You have to cut up NES replacement pads and it never feels right, huge pain in the ass.

Is it really that expensive? I'm on Japanese sites and the prices seem pretty reasonable. For modern retro prices, at least.

Absolutely, and don't even get me started on the CD-ROM units, good lord. The base PCE is a tank, but HuCards are a tiny portion of the library. CD units are the most unreliable piece of hardware I've ever dealt with.

>> No.8867437

I didn't say that particular HuCard was expensive, look up AVENUE PAD controller prices.

street fighter ii is surprisingly less expensive on pce, because they produced a bunch of copies

it sold well at first, but the snes port of Turbo came out a mere 3 months after in japan, making it less desirable

>> No.8867450

I have a LaserActive but recently it keeps acting weird. Makes a clicking sound that goes faster and the screen keeps away or goes very fast vertically (like a film projector), sound slightly skips.

That's what I did before I threw in the towel. The difference is you can get Chinese clones of the TurboEverDrive now, so if I was doing it over again I would do that. Buy an ugly yellow original PCE, get a Chinese RGB/Component/Composite thing, a bootleg EverDrive, and maybe one of those retrobit or whatever controllers to keep it cheap. Could probably get up and running for under $150.

Damn I remember around 2016 or so I was able to buy new old stock Avenue Pad 6 controllers for about $30. I got into PCE around that time when /vr/ had bst threads.

Ok so I shouldn't be too worried about my PC engine? It's just the og pce with the sssssssd3 thing attached. It sometimes feels warm and with prices being high don't want to burn it out.

PC Engine. Whoever came up with that retarded MUH GRAFX name should be executed (and don't even get me started on the ugly design). But I guess it was par for the course for the American market with all the edgy shit going around in the 90s.

It's a based console but you need to cope with the fact that many great releases will be out of reach if you're EOP. Keeps the prices on those titles low at least.

Fin game, but they ditch the swinging mechanics early on for straightforward platforming. To anyone struggling with the early part of this game, spam jump then down+fire for special attacks. The one that goes straight up sucks balls and I've never found a good use for it.

Super CD Rom2 died on me last summer. No more power to the system anymore. I don't have the tools or the skills to open it up and fuck with it, and no one in my area is willing to take the job.
