After playing longer, my opinion of Daikatana (1.3v patch) is that it's an incredibly uneven janky mess, but I am honestly sort of having fun with it.
I'm pretty sure that the game wasn't playtested at all and that the level designers just threw whatever shit design that they wanted into the game, so there's plenty of frustration and glitches that you have to deal with, but at least it doesn't end up feeling stale. Some of the secrets are quite clever too.
The first two levels in the swamp and the sewer are extremely bad and boring, and it wouldn't surprise me if most players never even bothered making it past them. Once you get into the headquarters proper and start fighting human enemies, the pace of the game picks up significantly.
Certainly one area that you have to respect about Daikatana is its ambition. There are four different time periods in the game, each with their own unique enemies and weapons (25 in total). The weapons feel very original too, although wonky in execution. And I don't know if it's because I'm playing with 1.3v but the AI teammates aren't THAT much of a hindrance.

Daikatana isn't a well designed game, but it is an ambitious and interesting game, and it still beats the hell out of most console FPS by virtue of the Quake 2 engine and oldschool design sensibilities. I recommend giving it a chance with the 1.3v patch and turning on unlimited quicksaving (I regret not doing this), and try to push back the first few boring levels.

That's what I see everyone say, that the game is rough and awkward as fuck, but after fixing it up some, it's pretty damn fun at many parts.

Nevermind, I don't think I am going to be able to finish it. It's not one of the worst games ever, but it's very messy and inconsistent.
I've heard people describe it as 4 FPS games in one, and that's pretty accurate. Depending on the level, the game is either Half-Life, Quake, Unreal, Hexen 2, or Sin. There's a huge amount of variety, but not a lot of polish.

The AI teammates would be impressive if they weren't so glitchy. In episodes 2 & 3 I was strafe jumping across the maps at lightning speeds searching for keys, and they were always only a few seconds behind unless they got stuck.

Of Final Doom, TNT Evilution is a little harder than Doom 2, while The Plutonia Experiment is a LOT harder than Doom 2. Thy Flesh Consumed is initially a lot harder than Doom and Doom 2, but tapers off pretty quickly.
For Quake, Dissolution Of Eternity and Scourge Of Armagon both up the challenge over the original Quake.

If you want SERIOUSLY hardball Doom and Quake though, you have to look at the fanmade mapsets for that, they're made in all shapes and sizes so there's something for everyone, but there's many which go out of their way to be extremely challenging. Something like Sunlust on UV makes Plutonia look restrained and mild.

90s shooters which were tough as nails would be Blood and Shadow Warrior. Then you've got Rise Of The Triad, which isn't that harsh in itself, but the Extreme Rise Of The Triad (EROTT) expansion is outright obnoxiously hard, to the point that probably very few people would find it fun. EROTT will do shit like have only one of the player characters be able to actually progress the game past a certain point, because the others run too slow or too fast.
None of the iD shooters pull crap like that, and to a large part they're pretty easy going.

youre an idiot
the whole point was to go the opposite of the "for kiddies" console marketing a la nintendo and make big bad bloody games for BIG KIDS™ read: edgy teenagers with PCs
while the rest of the industry was bowing down to the DC wives and their ESRB bullshit, they realized
>wait. were on PC where no one gives a fuck. mortal kombat made millions from a couple pixels of blood. we have WAY more blood
it was honestly great marketing and made them tons of fucking money. and it certainly resonated with the 90s nerdy metalhead demographic they were dealing with primarily

The game funnily enougg becomes easier on the highest difficulty because the levels have more enemies on them, leading to faster leveling up, though only attack, power and vitality worth leveling.
As for the game itself, rarely it provides some fun moments but it's usually either boring or annoying. E1 and E4 are dogshit and the low point of the game while E2 and E3 are mostly harmless, if dull as fuck.
