EGM had me thinking this game is trash.

What wrong opinions did you absorb from gaming rags?

I got from almost every outlet under the sun that TP was a 10/10 game. So yes, I joined in the outrage when pic related happened.

Of course, I now know Girthmann was hated because he spoke the truth.

I guess? I went on to actually play the game, and by the end of it I felt it to be flawed and not fully deserving of all the 10/10s it was getting.
>>8864493
It IS a good score. Hell, Gamespot's scoring system at the time labeled it as Great IIRC. But Zelda fanboys (myself included) felt it to be an affront because Zelda couldn't be considered anything less than near-perfect. And this was before the game released, by the way.

Review scores with decimal points are the dumbest idea ever; they're just there to imply some sort of incredibly objective S C I E N C E analysis, something basically pointless in the context of a piece of entertainment, and a cheap copout for the responsibility of a reviewer to stand up for his opinion AS an opinion. It's one thing when you're averaging different individual feature scores (or different reviewers' scores, as Famitsu did, which is the best method imo), but it's amazing how widespread this sort of nonsense was across vidya journalism for so many years.

Nah, I'm fine with whole number scores, even 1-10 ones even if 1-5 would suffice. They work ok as a quick bottom-line for a review as long as readers understand them as such

>> No.8864617

>>8864591
I'm referring to the fact that often times the scores are inflated because sites and publications are wholly in bed with publishers and are pressured to give good marks to the same games they're receiving both review copies and ad space money for.

A score out of 5 is fine. A score out of 10 is unnecessary but fine, I guess. Add decimal points and you're essentially using a ONE HUNDRED point scale. It's just stupid.

Not him, but I'm still bummed about the lack of tools and items to use for combat/platforming in Zelda 2. Sure, you have spells but it's just not the same. I'll admit that as it stands, Zelda 2 doesn't need extra tools for the action bits but I always miss having a boomerang at the very least.

I consider it a proper Zelda game, I just want to have a discussion about Zelda 2 with someone that isn't a meme goblin.

The funniest bit was when he reviewed the GameCube version, stated it to be a good improvement just from the controls, and still only bumped it to 8.9 just to cuck us Zeldafags from the 9 we were demanding. I was mad at the time, but that was well played on his part.

I never had any gaming magazines lie to me. It wasn't until internet until game critique started lying to me. The only way to survive is to find a way to play the game for yourself, then decide.

I grew up with a Mexican Nintendo mag, and they had me believe the competition (whom they rarely named, like it was taboo to even acknowledge they existed) was wholly inferior in every sense. In hindsight, so much of what was said about Nintendo vis a vis their competitors was hilarious cope, especially during the N64 days.

>Review scores

Often review scores are intimately related to how much ad $$$$ is flowing in, or like that famous case where a game was given a bad rating because the reviewer couldn't understand how to play it and found it needlesly hard...it's RETARDED to pay heed to such things

iGN’s 10/10 for Skyward Sword. I’ll never forgive them. Never trusted game journos ever again.

Regarding retro games, Earthworm Jim 2 got a lot of bad press but I really liked it. AVGN hated Mission Impossible 64 but it was one of my favorite games. I read that “Psi Ops” was good somewhere but it was utter garbage

When did they say that? EGM didn't start publication until a year after Zelda II was already out, and the only real mention of it I can find was when OoT was on the way and they said it was a fantastic game that was very popular, mentioning only "some" critics didn't like it because it "looked different".

What critics those are is anyone's guess as most video game magazines that covered Nintendo games didn't exist until 1989 too. Nintendo Power was the exception, not the rule.

>or different reviewers' scores, as Famitsu did, which is the best method imo
I have a method of reviewing where I judge each aspect of the game separately, and some parts of it can obtain a 3/2 score which basically means "This is the standard by which I will now measure this". It's granular as hell but when combined to a total score it falls apart, so it has to be taken as a big picture.
