Hello, I like the Sega Genesis, I think it's neat and ahead of its time

>> No.8841097

>>8841082
Definitely not ahead of its time in hardware. They really could have used the YM2608 sound chip instead of the infinitely shittier YM2612.

>> No.8841105

>>8841097
That's where you are wrong dummy, compare the model numbers, 2612 it's clearly superior than your shitty 2608

i really don't see the appeal
everyone loves the pc engine port as well

its literally just a slogfest

You wouldn't mind trading a GA102 graphics card for a GA106 graphics card, right? It does have a smaller number.
Anyway, YM2608 can do everything the YM2612 can, with a few more audio channels and even a sample channel. Not to mention less "compression" in sound mixing.

Be interested to see SNES use YM2612 nor GBA with suitable YM3438?

walking and pressing A to insta-kill everything in sight?

ok

>> No.8841173

>>8841151
Chip companies usually design their best chips. Here you start at 0. When they manufacture the chips, some parts get fucky and fail. The sample channel doesn't work. The sound mixing doesn't work. They cut those off, voila, we got a new chip. 0 is already taken, how about number 1? A few number 1 has rhythm channels failed, cut those off. Now we have chip number 2. So on and so forth.

>> No.8841208

>>8841173
The less the better then?

>> No.8841226

>>8841208
This isn't necessarily true for ALL companies, just a very well-established and long-lasting convention of chip naming. But in general, for the same generation (2608 means the generation is 26, part number 08), smaller is better.

I don't consider the genesis to be ahead of it's time. There isn't a single game on the system that could be considered ahead of it's time technology wise. All the games were very current for it's era, which is great! The goal of the system was to have a great arcade experience at home. You don't want your home ports to be completely remade like what we saw on arcade to 8bit conversions.
The Atari Lynx is something that I would consider to be ahead of it's time, not the Sega Genesis

You are forgetting the genesis came out at the time of the NES, that's why it has that big 16 bit sign on it. Nintendo would have been pretty happy to keep on selling 8 bit garbage if it wasn't for Sega

Cope at what. You can't refute any points without homebrew. Go back to the drawing board. Lynx was far ahead of it's time, while the Genesis was on par with what was available (PCE, PC-88/98/X68k). All those can run homebrew as well retard

This thread is about the second one. The genesis also didn't get the first one. The two consoles don't share a single splatterhouse release.

>>8841097
I think they hit a sweetspot of affordability and power with what they had. None of the 3rd-4th gen consoles that succeeded had cutting-edge hardware, the entire point of making them was that it was now financially feasible to mass produce using older chips. The sound chip was inflexible but still led to fun tunes being made on it and they had a fast CPU, decent trade for cost.

I played SNES but in hindsight, I should have gotten a Megadrive as the games were better for me. I loved arcade games like Chelnov and Crude Busters and sure enough they were on Megadrive which I didn't know at the time.
