Should I play the PS1 Tomb Raider games using an emulator, or are the GOG releases better?

>> No.8837248

GOG version + Automated Fix is perfectly servicable. Unless you don't like widescreen.

Thanks, anon. 4:3 is cozy, but if it looks and plays well in widescreen, that's also a great option. The Mario 64 port looks great in widescreen.

Use an emulator. Having savestates and a rewind function will save you so much time.

Besides that, crt filters increase the graphics 100 fold

There is literally no reason to play this any other way

>> No.8838816

The PC version of the game actually does have unlimited saving
The save crystals were only a thing in the console version

>> No.8838818

>>8838816
I know, but consider how long it takes to go through the save/load flow compared to hitting f1 or shift f1 for savestates.

Also the rewind button is paramount to the enjoyment of any TR game when 1 wrong step can cost you minutes

The actual best ways (google them)
TR1: TR1Main
TR2: TR2Main
TR3: Find the early build of TR3Main with not much fixed but cutscenes (but still runs okay)
TR4: Wait for Tomb4 or PSX
TR5: Tomb5
If you can't find one of these PlayStation will be fine.

All good selling points for emulation + PSX versions as long as you aren't a purist. However, if you're gonna go this route you will encounter frame rate issues and will have to do some initial config to get an acceptable experience graphics-wise. Fortunately Duckstation allows you to fix all these issues, ie fps can be fixed by using the OC feature.

With all that said, if you dont want the extra features of emulation, GOG + automated fix patch will give you what you need straight away.

CRT filters add infinite detail to the game. What was once a 320p blocky mess has been corrected to a super high fidelity piece of art. I'm literally playing on a 4k monitor and each and every pixel serves a purpose now.

PSX version emulated on Bleemcast running on a Dremacast emulator on a virtual machine running on a dual boot on Mac for the real "as the developers intended" experience. Of course don't forget the scanlines as anon wisely recommends >>8841242.
If only there was a PC version of Tomb Raider!

>> No.8841852

>>8841429
Nta, but the pc/windows versions of tomb raider are being worked on and patched by the community as we speak (thanks to reverse engineered code). Console versions will always remain static and will not improve in any way, perhaps only thanks to some scaling/filtering options available in the emulator. Proper widescreen support has been added and plenty of remaining bugs in the original code were fixed.

>Console versions
yes, but I was suggesting emulators, not true consoles. I wouldnt recommend playing TR on a console either. Emulators are getting better and better every year
