People often love to point out how Sonic 2 has some slowdown on this (even though the original also has slowdowns in parts this one doesn't) but nobody ever mentions that Sonic Jam fixes a lot of other issues the original Genesis games have, like music and sound effects no longer having to share the same channels, so the music in, for example, Ice Cap Act 2 doesn't get fucked up with Sonic's spindash sound, or how the 2-player mode in Sonic 2 is actually playable (the original is literally unplayable due to slowdown, Sonic Jam has 0 slowdown).
Sonic Jam is the DEFINITIVE package for any true connoisseur of the blue blur and I'm literally tired of pretending otherwise.

Sonic on a disc causes slow down.
The ps2 one is slow too.

It does have some, but it's not too bad. Admittedly, the slowdown in Sonic Jam is a bit worse (but still not unplayably bad).
however, the 2 player mode in original Genesis is really bad, and there's 0 slowdown on Jam.

My sister and I played 2-player Sonic 2 all the time growing up, it was far from literally unplayable. I always wanted a Saturn though. My friend had one and I used to play Virtua Cop with him.
Then I moved away and he got addicted to heroin and OD’d a few years back. I miss him.

Well, at least he probably had a fun time while high on that shit.
Maybe not literally, but the slowdown on Genesis Sonic 2 multiplayer is harsh. So much for blast process.

SOUL.
i don't think it sounds even bad.
>>8826979
yeah this is annoying but still Jam has a lot going for it, I agree with OP.
Sound effects are also of higher quality on Sonic Jam than on Genesis.
>>8827394
Sonic 1 doesn't have any slowdown that I can remember on Jam. The only game that has extra slowdown on Jam is Sonic 2.
Also, Sonic 1 in Sonic Jam is based on the japanese version of Sonic 1, which has more parallax effects than the US/EU versions.

Really? That sounds kinda stupid and authentic at the same time. I don't think it sounds bad though. As far as I've notice, it's pretty much identical.

No slowdowns at all, at least in the european version of Jam (which in itlsef is a huge upgrade from the disastrous 50hz PAL Sonic 1 on the Mega Drive).

Weren't these versions true ports to the Saturn as opposed to later releases being emulation? I remember watching a video regarding how this was one of the better ways to play the original Sonic Trilogy with some extra original features and of course Sonic World. I wonder if the slow down just comes down to weird optimization quirks when porting the game over to the Saturn because the slowdowns exist at weird parts of the game, but other places that suffered on the Genesis run better in comparison, also the multiplayer being not shit. The music aspect is probably the more interesting thing here because the music was captured directly off a Model 1 Genesis so having the music not be altered by weird emulation issues, or sound channels being overtaken by other sound effects was something that was never properly addressed in later versions. I'm wondering how Sonic Origins will fare since those too will be direct ports of the games and will offer 16:9 widescreen for all the games, and have Sonic CD like Jam should have had in the first place, let alone every other god damn Sonic collection outside of Sonic Gems. It concerns me that the ports are being handled internally by Sega so I'm wondering if they're gonna bother adding the bonus stuff from Sonic 2's mobile port or any bonuses at all regarding lost content and the like.

Having played the trilogy on Saturn, the slow down is very difficult to explain. Sonic 2's the only one with any real problems but slow down happens when there's very little on screen or coming up. Seeing what some fans are doing with SotN right now it wouldn't surprise me if Jam could be cleaned up too.

I'm not sure about this. I was fucking around with the sound test in the game world, and I noticed the music actually comes out of my surround speakers and shit too. Like different channels of the track will play differently in each speaker. I dunno if that's just a Saturn thing or what.

What's odd is the Saturn's sound chip is more that capable of replicating the sound of a lot of 80's Yamaha FM Synth chips with it's FM Synth capabilities. For example here's a demo of it doing the Space Harrier theme using the FM Synth features:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EHky1Tf8TWo

I don't think the Genesis would be that far out of reach. 6 4OP FM Synth channels would still leave 8 PCM channels. You could probably do the PSG and PCM channels with the remaining 8 channels.

Funny you replied to my post because as of this post I've finally played it for myself. I recently bought a JP copy for my Saturn and had to pick it up from the post office but I was able to play through Sonic 1 & 2 today so far and I know what you mean. Still haven't played Sonic 3 yet, but as I'm typing this I have the save select menu on idle behind me.
Sonic 2's slowdown is quite.... odd. They're like pockets of faint lag that usually aren't happening all the time, but when they happen you can FEEL it happening and it's very strange because they're at the most random locations. Still managed to get all the Chaos emeralds and wasn't really affected by the slowdown during my time playing, but it was just really fucking weird to experience.
