8825638 No.8825638 [Reply] [Original]

Just bought a SNES in good shape. If it hasn't yellowed already, do I have to worry? The room I keep it in gets some sunlight. Do I need to keep it in the shade?

>> No.8825651

>> No.8825657

The SNES is a shade plant. It’s attractive foliage spawns colors of purple, grey, and black, with black vines spouting vibrate berries. They combine well with woodland species such as CRT and VCR, and do not require watering. With reliable care they will flourish for many years and will add much to your garden.

>> No.8825660

isn't it like the type of plastic they used that caused it to yellow? if it hasnt yellowed yet it probably wont

This is all but entirely verified to be false. It's the bromine in the plastic. It's why even models that yellow have pieces that are still grey.

ANY amount of sunlight will contribute to the yellowing effect. no one would say to be autistic about it and avoid even tiny incidental sunlight here and there, but know that the chemical process is taking place to a miniscule degree every single time sunlight touches it. if this is your "play" machine and you don't ever plan on selling it, i wouldn't even worry. you can retrobrite it or buy a new shell later if needed, and it doesn't matter because it's just yours to play.

Sunlight -> window -> console = yellowing
Sunlight -> console = de-yellowing

The process can be reverted to some extent so it will never be new. The good news is, yellowing takes years, but de-yellowing takes days. Still I would try to be careful, at the very least do not store your console on a shelf which has glass windows. It's what I had done to that game boy. Big mistake.

UV can yellow plastics and papers, no one is disputing that. That doesn't mean a SNES not kept in front of a window won't yellow.

>> No.8830740

Certain plastics, in particular ABS, are prone to deterioration with time as the plastic is made by mixing with polybutadiene to give it softness. However the polybutadiene is prone to evaporating with time which turns the ABS brittle. The only way to fix this is to melt the ABS, re-mix it with polybutadiene, and re-mold it.

'ABS'' plastic like the SNES case, or 'acrylonitrile butadiene styrene' is very flammable so they add ''bromine'' to make it less so, being a very inexpensive flame-retardant. UV light that shines onto the SNES over its lifetime breaks the chemical bonds of the bromine so that it can seek oxygen in a process we call oxidation. Heat accelerates this process, and the bromine turns brown giving that SNES a beautiful retro-brown finish.

This is why you will see SNES's with the cartridge port unharmed as it was piece assembled at the factory and did not receive a treatment of bromine.
