There's a very delicate sweet spot between edginess and goofiness that worked great and was probably accidental in the first and second games. The third one just looked plain stupid most of the time, and from 4 onward the series just went for blunt edgelord nonsense.

Even the common special movies are fucking ridiculous; there's no rhythm or reason for the patterns, they just feel randomly generated. The regular finishing moves are on that same vein, but yeah, the stage-based finishers are near impossible to pull off

You have to build a super meter to use even standard special moves right? If your super meter is empty you're stuck using basic punches and kicks, I think. It's one of those games that had good ideas and terrible execution.

I think his victory animation only triggers if he's the cpu.
Must be related to him being delegated to the position under Kintaro. (in the beta he was just a random fighter)

I guess they wanted to make him more special.

I think 4 still had some decent fatalities (Reptile's face eating one is still one of my favorite ones) but DA and Deception were either too goofy or unimpressive.
Quan Chi's neck stretch or that one were the character pops-out Banjo-Kazooie eyeballs are too silly even for MK standards.

and then also ask him why they put that big black image in between the layers of the deadpool, thus disabling the red skyline.

MKII was just so damn impressive back then, detailed impressive fatalities and secrets and weird as fuck stages.

they had no idea where to take the series in terms of mechanics, but they were still saturating the market with spinoffs, ports and upgrades. by '98 mortal kombat was the new doom, getting unnecessary releases that only made people more and more sick of it. mk3, umk3 and even trilogy were well received, it's stuff like sub zero mythologies, mk4 and shaolin monks that damaged the franchise.

>> No.8825593

Shaolin Monks was great. What really happened was MK3 and UMK3 were well received but MK Trilogy started to feel like they were milking it a little too much while other fighting games were seriously stepping up. MK started looking a bit long in the tooth and then MK4 was just really weird looking and goofy. Combined with the second movie the series quickly became a laughing stock.

Without the positive reception from that game I'm not sure mk9 gets made, shaolin was a huge lifeline after the failure of all the early 6th gen fighters.

And then they did the Xena like tv show, and the cartoon where they fought the baddies and then there was the coloring book and the have your own adventure book for the toddlers and the Stryker crossing guard whistle and the Raiden COOKING BOOK!

I mean.. I get that they liked making money, it was just.. weird seeing it done after that whole senate hearing about them being murder sims.

Shaolin Monks was great, it was like MKII the brawler!
the only problem it had was that Midway went a little goofy with everything they did, but even then its an amazing game!

Sure, but then they'd just assume it to be one of the many obligatory console ports and not pay any attention to it, probably already having Doom on another machine.

While Killer Instinct has infinitely better gameplay than MK, can't argue that its fatalities were never as cool or violent as the ones in MK. They were always more on the funny side sometimes though (like Orchid's tits one).
