Are these Gameboy Mega Man games any good? I'm playing the first one and it feels like a worse version of MM1. Are they all like this?

>> No.8807570

>>8807539
No, the first one is he only bad one but all except GB V use bosses from the NES game but they are still good games.

>> No.8807582

They're all good except for 2. If you play 2 use the romhack that fixes the music at least, too bad it doesn't fix the gameplay though.

1 has a lot of unique content in the end game.

Also if you have to play one of them, play 5, it's the only one which is 100% unique

>> No.8807587

2 is bad. The rest are good

The first one is a very "early GB" type game. Pretty basic but a functional, if watered-down, portable MM.

2 is a bit of a mess - Gameplaywise it isn't drastically different than 1, but the game shipped with a bug that causes the entire OST to be one octave higher than it should be making the soundtrack eargrating to listen to

3 is solid - Good level design, no soundtrack issues and fun bosses - the first proper great GB entry

4 and 5 are NES-tier quality. If you only play one GB game, make it one of those.

2 is shit, gameplay and music wise, don't bother

1 is serviceable but hard, not as much as the NES counterpart though, and is over soon, for better or worse. Cool ending sequence too.

3 is the hardest, but the exclusive bosses are cool and personally I found it novel that you get to play the 4 MM3 stages with the MM4 charge shot.

4 is the 2nd best, recycling aside, it has a lot of effort put into it, nice cutscenes too.

5 is the best and there's no recycled content, bosses and main gimmick are exclusive to it.

Except for 2 they get better with every installment with 5 generally being considered the best one and a worthwhile experience for any Mega Man fan.

>> No.8807871

Wily's Revenge is alright, II is not good, III is a huge improvement over the first two but isn't as good as IV and V.
If you were to play any Mega Man GB game, I highly recommend IV and especially V.
V is actually one of my favorite Mega Man games period, and IV is also in my top 10.

Rockman World games II III IV andd V are better than the NES games until V and VI. This is a fact, and you can't say otherwise.

>>8807570
You mean the second one is the only bad one.

>> No.8807971

I've only played the first 3
1 is a remix of MM1 and 2. Not as good as any of the NES games, but Dr Wily Stage 1 is kino
2 is crap, but at least it's an easy game. Worse than 1, get the music patch to avoid earrape
3 is the best one out of these, but still not as good as any of the NES games yet.

>>8807539
Avoid 2 since it's a broken mess
The rest are fine and quite decent, especially 5 which is basically megaman 12 since it's an entirely original game with an unique cast and setting

This is such a good fucking boxart. Possibly the best western MM art. Game isn't bad, either.

If...
1. you want to play great retro games, play V.
2. you want to play the best titles original Game Boy has to offer, play III-V.
3. you've played every NES Mega Man and are starved for more, play I-V.

MMI is a rough start, but you ought to get the hang of it by the time you beat Ice Man's stage.

MMIV & V I would rank above every NES Mega Man except 4.

MMII is the worst in the GB series with screechy music and a level of difficulty low for even 8 bit MM titles, but I still found it worthwhile to see the remix of MM2+3 and to recognize Quint when he shows up again in a couple later titles (his power is funny too).

Guys, spoil the suspense for me.
What the fuck did 2 do?

The first title for GB was outsourced to Minakuchi Engineering. Nothing bad, but nothing outstanding either.

For Mega Man II, Capcom decided to outsource to a different company: Japan System House. An interview with Inafune explained that these dudes weren't really familiar with the games, and this is reflected in the title's gameplay. Most notorious was the music. The composer and the music programmer were two different people. The programmer was kinda new, and the music was performed at a noticeably higher pitch than intended.

Capcom never used Japan System House again, and returned to Minakuchi Engineering for the rest of the GB titles. While not explicitly mentioned in the credits, they very likely later went on to assist with the very rushed MM7. Their influence is observable in some of the level design, and the bizarre sprite-to-screen ratio makes sense if you consider the team was accustomed to producing Mega Man games for Game Boy aspect ratios.

Am I the only one who liked those games? They really weren't that bad. I thought they were fun bite-sized Mega Man titles and a good way to kill half an hour or so. Admittedly, I am hugely biased as a huge Mega Man fan.

They also worked on Wily Wars and Mega Man X3, fun fact.

what is that blue bit attached to Mega Man's back? always bothered me because don't think I've ever seen it depicted in any other illustration, western or otherwise.

1 is good. A little slow but it’s good. 2 has the workings of a good game but it’s so buggy, awkward and strange that any serious enjoyment you could get out of it is pretty minuscule

>> No.8809984

>>8807539
The only bad one is II, as that was done by a different team than the other four.
the others range from fine (I, III) to great (IV, V)
The controls are made to fit the screen size, and usually have momentum on top of that. If you have to play any one of them, play V as it has it's own set of bosses.

By the way OP, there is a romhack out there that fixes up the music for 2 if you decide to play it. It won't fix the other issues with it though.
