What are some of the best levels that mess with the players mind with a bizarre layout or unusual effects. A good example is Constantine's Castle in Thief 1 or the nightmare from Max Payne

I had a good time with Realm of Impossibility when I was a lad -- fight monsters and grab treasure in a 2d M.C. Escher maze.
I seem to recall there are some rooms with fucked-up impossible geometry in Marathon, as well.

Arsenal Gear in MGS2. The map layout may not be bizarre on its own, but the atmosphere and sound effects combined with the absurd codec calls make it stand out. The whole situation is a mindfuck - no gear, naked, shivering, sneezing and surrounded by weird cybernetic ninja commandos. I need scissors! 61!

The Sword's mission is peak Looking Glass immersion and storytelling. Put some good headphones on and dive in Constantine Castle. As wackier as the level gets, at some point you'll feel as distressed as Garrett when perusing the whole place for valuables

I always wondered how it was done at a technical level. Is your character really rotating around along the twisted hallway or is the entire level rotating with link moving straight ahead. Also when the hallways change from straight to twisted is the environment actually twisting or did the game teleport you to an identical temple

The room's rotation is locked to your X position (or whatever axis he's running along in that instance). The hall itself is just a twisted model that rotates under you.
