RPG elements in platformers have always made me happy. Especially things like towns where you jump up to go from one floor of a house to the next, etc. The weird kind of sideways architecture appeals to me in an odd way. Specific examples that spring to mind, though only one of them is retro, are Monster World IV, Konjak's upcoming game The Iconoclasts, and Cave Story.

Can you recommend some other games with that kind of thing going on?

Obviously I'd prefer good ones.

Shantae GBC, play it on a gba emulator for transparency effects.

Hope you're already familiar with the Wonder Boy games that precede Monster World 4. Wonder Boy in Monster World is the #1 thing you should check out if by some chance you aren't. Wonderboy III: The Dragon's Trap and Wonderboy in Monster Land (Land, not World!) are the same sort of thing, too.

Some other similar sort of games: Popful Mail, Castlevania 2 & Symphony of the Night...
Aah my memory is failing me, that's all I can really think of for now.

Okay. I'm looking to get an actual GBA at some point in the near future (had one but lost it about six months ago). Is Shantae expensive or can I probably snag a copy fairly cheaply?

Ys III, Legend of Xanadu, Sorcerian, Cadash...

The best game in this category is without a doubt Tomba.

Not retro, but the GBA and DS Castlevanias are like that.

Valkyrie Profile for the Playstation (and PSP) is an inverse example. It's an RPG with platforming elements, and done very well.

Master race RPG platformer.

Seriously, everyone is gaga about "Metroidvania", but Tomba is the only platform-rpg that really made me want to go further FOR A REASON. Castlevania is just "you have to go the Dracula's Keep and kill some monsters on the way" when Tomba! really was "There are lots of things happening in this world, look around you and help its inhabitants!".

I hated that game for making he go OCD over the quests.

Even after searching every - and I mean EVERY - nook and cranny I still had gaps.

WHY ARE THERE STILL GAPS!

By the end of the game, you have something like six gaps at the end of your book I think. Perfectly normal.
