Fuck all that console stuff, discuss and recommend some DOS games.
There are a shitload of Dungeons and Dragons games, which are worth playing?

>Ultima 1 appreciator
Out of 1-6 it's the only one I've legit beaten. You only have a single character and it's easy to bullshit your way through the entire game.
I beat Ultima 2 with an "improvement patch" that makes it less grindy, it's a janky but funny game. You're supposed to grind for random drops, that can be randomly stolen, and when you level up you improve random stats. The most efficient way is to get on a boat and fire at enemies on land, then pick up the drops. It's like playing a shitty MMO in a single player game from 1982. But it has time travel (it's basically Chrono Trigger early alpha) and you can land your spaceship on other planets.
The other ones have good ideas (morality system and living open world) but they force you to engage with the boring old rpg shit more, and Lord British thinks waiting around for something to happen is a good puzzle design.

I've recently discovered Legend adventures. While certainly not the best of the genre, they are beyond comfy. If you like (bad) puns, give Companions of Xanth a try.

The 'Gold Box' games, and the very one you posted are good. The some of the real time ones (Eye of the Beholder, Ravenloft) can be interesting but are oh so exploitable and fairly shallow D&D adaptations due to it.

What year/hardware era/games would you all say heralded the PC as a legit gaming platform that could actually hold its own against consoles and other home computers?

That's not to say there were no good games in the early DOS era, of course, but you have to admit what >>8803443 said is mostly true. I think VGA was when parity with competitors became possible (though it wasn't fully realized until the 90's), and Doom is when it embarked into greatness.

Around 1990 assuming the game had VGA and sound card support. There were still a lot of EGA and PC speaker sound games kicking around until VGA+sound officially became the bare minimum.

>> No.8804640

>>8804392
Keep in mind a lot of so-called VGA games were little more than glorified EGA games. Hell, some games that touted VGA support didn't look any different when set to VGA mode compared to EGA. Obviously this was done for compatibility purposes, as many people were still using EGA and even CGA and Hercules hardware, but it often meant limiting the game somewhat. It took a few more years for PC to finally move on from catering to ancient hardware and truly taking advantage of what was possible.

Anyone here happen to know this game I'm thinking about? Pic very much related. You had 2 players each with a cursor that controlled a mass of pixels and your objective was to surround the opponent to take part of their pixels and grow your mass of pixels.

No. Betrayal at Krondor has characters from the books (some of them playable), but the story is standalone. The heart of the story is Gorath, who is an original character. Feist later adapted the game's story into a book called Krondor: The Betrayal and wrote several sequels to it.

I tried some "first person" dnd games that predate doom and uuw, and holy fuck they are unplayable.
The "first person" view only renders like 2 tiles in front, and is less useful than the mini map for actually playing the game, despite taking up 80% of the screen

D&D? Or RPG? Because there's a difference.

Best old D&D games that I've played are Dark Sun: Shattered Lands (sequel's too convoluted) and Al-Qadim (takes a while to get into, but I'll never forget it). There are many later games that are much, much better, such as Baldur's Gate, IceWind Dale, PlaneScape Torment, Temple of Elemental Evil...

But if you want FRP of any brand, I'd recommend Might and Magic 4-8 and Wizardry 8 as God-tier games.

Setup Guide for using Roland Sound Canvas VA with DOSBox & ScummVM
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WumRboSfn90

>DOSBox Guide
1) Install Sound Canvas VA
2) Install loopMIDI: https://www.tobias-erichsen.de/software/loopmidi.html
3) Launch both loopMIDI & Sound Canvas VA
4) In loopMIDI create a port for Sound Canvas VA to interface through
5) With both loopMIDI & Sound Canvas VA already running, run DOSBox
6) Type "MIXER /LISTMIDI" into DOSBox to see all available MIDI device IDs - as you can see, Sound Canvas VA is listed under "2"

You are now ready to use Sound Canvas VA in DOSBox. However, MS-DOS games all come with their own audio setups & they need to be configured individually if you want them to take advantage of your new virtual MIDI device's capabilities. There are a number of ways how you can achieve this. Choose whichever suits you best:

7a) Easiest option is to just run a game's audio setup - pick Sound Canvas VA for music playback only, you still want Sound Blaster 16/Pro for SFX & voices (If asked, by default MIDI is available on address 330 & interrupt 2 while Sound Blaster is on address 220 & interrupt 7)
7b) Load a per-game custom config file - copy the 3 highlighted lines from "Lands of Lore (DOSXBox ECE).txt" to enable Sound Canvas VA
7c) Use one custom DOSBox config file across all games - enabling Sound Canvas with the same 3 settings (not recommended)
7d) Use a frontend GUI for DOSBox and set up the corresponding options that way
