Neat.
One feature that I wish nodebuilders had is an infinite flat render. So things like oceans and such could work better.
I'm sure it's possible because if you fuck up the nodes by copying them from another map or whatever you get it as an error...

It’s weird how fine I am with this enemy design having a TV face right up until the choice to display some decent looking teeth, that in particular is what slays my suspension of disbelief and looks comical. They should’ve displayed either a gross or bloody mouth, something weirder and creepier altogether, or just toss out the idea and give him a mouth gun.

doom was always pretty goofy, it may have been edgy since boomers got scared by anything metal but id were a bunch of goobers and things like daisy or a demon being named after its two assholes while doomguy goes nuts with a chainsaw to rockin metal
eternal does lean too hard into this though, too much quirky goofy shit, but it did take the serious parts seriously (off the top of my head the marauder, the not-heaven place with its actual 10/10 atmospheric ost, the icon of sin, etc.)
I'd say 64 through 4 was the edgier doom period

/vr/'s Mass Extinction
Since Nicolas Monti's Mass Extinction stops in Triassic, maybe we can continue with the theme.
He had Devonian (E1), Carboniferous (E2), Permian (Alpha) and Triassic (Doom 2 Starport).
We can do Jurassic, Cretaceous and Paleogene.
>E1: Jurassic
M1: Hettangian
M2: Sinemurian
M3: Pliensbachian
M4: Toarcian
M5: Aalenian
M6: Bajocian
M7: Bathonian
M8: Callovian
M9: Oxfordian
M10: Kimmeridgian
M11: Tithonian
>E2: Cretaceous
M12: Berriasian
M13: Valanginian
M14: Hauterivian
M15: Barremian
M16: Aptian
M17: Albian
M18: Cenomanian
M19: Turonian
M20: Coniacian
M21: Santonian
M22: Campanian
M23: Maastrichtian
>E3: Paleogene
M24: Danian
M25: Selandian
M26: Thanetian
M27: Ypresian
M28: Lutetian
M29: Bartonian
M30: Priabonian
That way we stop right before the First Antarctic permanent ice-sheets.
M31 and M32 can be Rupelian and Chattian in order to also finish Paleogene, and maybe set them in a icy environment.
Each episode will need a specific theme that was not repeated in the first Mass Extinction, and they need to be stock (IWAD) themes or stock-friendly (no OTEX, no Gothic, no CC).
Plutonia E1 is a given, with all of those vines and dirt. Not sure if it would fit better in E1 or E2. Not too sure about the other ones.

Have you ever seen the Turok level editor? It's wonky as fuck and crashes every 20 minutes and the GUI doesn't scale with your resolution.

The one upside of Turok mapping is everything is literally just a 3D model you drag and drop. You just drag all the walls and floors and objects. They're all premade for you then you draw the sectors over them which is your floor to walk on.

I'm having trouble trying to come up with an encounter design for this cave section I made in my serious sam map. It's one long cave with a ravine splitting it in the middle. A bridge connects the two halves. By this point the player will have the single shotgun, double barrel, and flamethrower. They enter the cave at this point of view in the picture. There will definitely be some waves of enemies but I'm not sure what exactly. An idea I have right now is the second half of the cave being populated by a few of those small huts, with a reptiloid spawning on top of one when the first waves start. I'm thinking of placing the rocket launcher on the bridge for use in the second half. Besides that I'm stumped as what should be thrown against the player.

dunno what Daggerfall has to do with this, WoT is a straight FPS.
but yeah, I've played it last week. it's well-made and very tough even on normal. plays kinda like Unreal: enemies dodge around and your only hitscan is a late-game railgun. by the end it gets a bit old, there are no support/situational enemies, so once you figure out the tactics against the heavy-hitters, every encounter plays out the same.

Wanted to again thank the dude who recommended me all those lovely snow/christmas Quake maps 2 threads back. Got QSS today and tweaked it as much as I can to get it to look just like Quake originally did back then since I'm a filthy "purist". No option for 320x200 and dgvoodoo2 doesn't work here as it does in WinQuake unfortunately, so I'm stuck at 640x480. Once again, thanks a lot for getting me back into Quake dude.

Eh... As much as Romero has been able to prove he has a near-perfect memory, that doesn't necessarily mean he's trustworthy. He has a colossal ego and those last few years at id are vital to the celebrity status he's built for himself. It's almost silly to NOT expect some degree of revisionism coming from him at this point, especially given the mediocrity (at best) of many of his recent commercial projects.

Yeah, r_scale is the command. It's also under the extra options in QSS named "render scale". It can go up to 4, though I don't want to make it chunkier than it originally was back then. Since I'm stuck with 640x480 as the lowest selectable resolution, r_scale 2 gets as close to 320x200, 320x240. Also have bars on the side. It's not a big deal to me, though I'd love to stretch it out or something. Other than getting the game chunkier and sorting out all the other options to be as vanilla-looking as possible, I noticed certain mods/collabs like xmasjam have their own "effectinfo.txt" which modify/add certain visual effects and look extremely out of place in the original Quake. Commenting out everything in the.txt removes all those fancy-schmancy dust and smoke particles. Really makes the mods feel like they were made in the 90's despite coming out a year or two ago. Fucking love it.

>> No.8794485

It's an old trick where a sidedef is referenced by multiple scrolling linedefs, causing it to scroll multiple times over and go super fast. The only way I know how to recreate the effect is by manually altering the lump data with a wad editor like slade, although I haven't really looked for a better way. Modern editors like doombuilder assume that it's an error and will automatically remove the effect if you load a map so you have to do it after you do everything else. The effect also never works in gzdoom for some reason which is pretty surprising considering it's in an IWAD.
Historically it's also been used to make vanilla walls that appear to scroll right like here:
https://www.doomworld.com/idgames/docs/editing/rtscroll
It only works if you're running the game at the og 35 fps however. Obviously there's better ways to do all that stuff with boom and the like. Plutonia has a lot of mapping tricks like that.

I meant the backwards scrolling trick in the rtscroll.wad I linked. It's because uncapped framerates interpolates between scrolling frames. Just scrolling somthing really fast works fine in any accurate port.
You could also use this method to overcome the vanilla limit of 64 scrollers but it wouldn't work with gzdoom.

oh, I missed this.
vanilla quake doesn't, but you can check for a monster flag in the trigger code. AD has enemy-activated triggers but not enemy-exclusive.
if you specifically mean invisible walls, it's tricky. there's clip (projectiles pass through) and there's skip (solid but invisible), but also there is a map hack where you assign an owner to an object and it becomes pass-through for the owner entity (usually in context of monsterclip, but may be possible to hack together playerclip somehow). and then there's the blunt solution of raising up an invisible wall while the player is standing in a trigger, then lowering once he stepped off.

After playing some Death Wish, I have a newfound appreciation for levels that require you to find secrets if you insist on pistol starting beyond map01, although the Build engine definitely gives you more freedom to do this over the Doom engine. nah, there's more to it. FTE can load a map with more enemies, but it will play at .1 fps. once the player is dead it runs fine, so it seems to just be linked to AI processing (haven't yet looked into CPU load). I've tried using just knights, without homing missiles or particles and such, and it didn't seem to make a difference.
spasm-likes run into overflow errors, which has to do with network protocol I think. in vkQuake the map will still crash at 3k enemies if the fight gets too intense.
also Quakespasm considers Quoth spawners spitting out 300 enemies at once a "runaway loop", it's one of the things I've yet to tweak. can't test Ironwail until then.

Also raised the max_edicts limit to 64000 (not sure if values above 32767 will work, but surely more than 64K won't since these are sent as 16 bit) and the packet limit to 640K from 64K. All of this is untested since I don't have anything that hits the limits in the first place.

OK, raising the packet limit was not a good idea, anything over 64K malfunctions. But with skill 1 (4444) it's just under and performance is exceptional (300+ fps).
vkQuake 1.13 works just fine, but it's quite a bit slower at skill 1 and falls off a cliff (~1 fps) at skill 2. Maybe it's hitting the same "limit" as FTE?
In either case 4K monsters seems very doable, for Ironwail you could try to spawn them in smaller chunks to avoid hitting the "runaway loop" limit (this is a QuakeC error from running too much stuff at the same time).

Who the fuck holds that opinion? Hexen 1 is much worse, it's not even close. The only part that slowed me down even a little in Hexen 2 is trying to get the staff in Egypt, everything else was straightforward. Compare with Hexen 1 where often times you need to backtrack to areas after pulling a random lever, without even knowing where to backtrack to.
Regardless if you want even more brainless and don't mind a deemphasis on melee try Heretic

But anon, how can you not tell the difference between that one room and that other room? It may have been copy-pasted, but it was also rotated, or maybe even flipped! It's a dead give away. Besides, thanks to the map designer's skillful and clever use of three whole different textures, you will never confuse a room with any other room in that same area.

Seriously though, fuck Hexen 1. It makes zero sense and zero attempt at making you understand.

From what I've played, most of Hexen pwads try to do both, they include harder combat with a lot more enemies while still doing puzzles. If you want something without too much switch hunting you might like the Penumbra pwad, I'd say it is more action focused and linear than most Hexen stuff.

I played through the entire UnMaking megawad for Doom 64 though, and that shit is sick. Especially loved the penultimate level where darkness (which damages the player) slowly engulfs the level, and you run from it until only a tiny light spot is left. Man, that's "Doom" in literal sense, love it.

That or just turning the corner, seeing them/getting hit, and just backing up and baiting them.
Some actual things that might help how you approach them is knowing they have a slow turn speed, and they don’t attack for a moment after taking any amount of damage.

Playing on Hard and playing like death is an actual concern instead of a minor quickload inconvenience. I quit being conservative with rarer ammo, started using parts of the arsenal that I hardly ever touched, and in ways that I never would've otherwise. Using the gravity gun and Source's physics instead of bruteforcing everything with the smg/ar2/shotgun also opens a new world of opportunities. Enemies flanking you? Block off openings with barrels and boxes. Need a vantage point? Stack some crates up on a wall and crouchjump onto a roof. Grenades? Energy balls? Throw them back.

It may not be "retro" in the sense of sprinting around in the open and mowing down tons of fodder, but taking advantage of the unique things it has and working around them instead of trying to play it like something else is what made me start liking it more. Compare to HL1, where the combat started feeling like a strange mix of Quake and the shooters that would come after, and I couldn't circumvent the inflated health of the HECU by launching a radiator into their face (still like it though)

Granted, this appreciation mostly happened while playing user levels, but I was also shown Doom's true potential through wads.

The most fun I had with Blood was on my first playthrough where I didn't know any of the cultist placements. I threw dynamite and proxy mines around corners without knowing what was there. Having played almost halfway through both DOS Powerslave and Powerslave Ex (the old one. not the new remaster), I have to say that I like the Build version of the game more.
Enemies respawn on level re-enter, no inventory, shitty ammo system, gibs-only, instant-death lava/ nukage, no mummification, weird platforming, having to break objects/ hope for enemy drops to replenish ammo and health, all of these things fucking suck ass.
Especially enemy respawning. What's the point in revisiting a level if all of your progress is lost in that level? Makes 95% of the game feel like padding, I didn't even bother killing them most of the time, just clear out important areas while I do something mandatory to progress then leave for the next level.
Why couldn't they have done it like Hexen did and maybe spawn some more enemies on a timer-based script instead of resetting the level after you leave it.
