Emulate The Twin Snakes on Dolphin with HD texture pack. It fixes a lot of the shitty parts of the original and is the superior version of MGS1. Only a completely deranged nostalgiafag could think the PS1 version is better.

>able to fast forward codecs
>PAL key backtracking is now optional
>PSG1-T added so you don't have to backtrack to the armory
>card keys don't need to be equipped to be used
>runs at 60 FPS instead of 30
>vastly superior controls and graphics
>superior voice acting for most characters (Go back and play the original. A lot of the acting is not good.)
>MGS2 mechanics add new depth to boss fights (shooting pipes during Ocelot, ducking in the ditch to avoid the tank)
>non-lethal weapons give you more options during boss fights
>bodies no longer disappear, making the game more difficult
>improved enemy AI and longer evasion phase discourages hiding and waiting
>confirmed canon by MGS3 and MGS4

Emulation? I've never tried to emulate ps2 so I dont know how decent it is but MGS1 should emulate no problem.

That pic seems like a massive exaggeration, the only one that's not been ported to every console under the sun is 4. Apparently its such a clusterfuck programming-wise that it'll probably never get ported but maybe ps3 emulation will be decent enough for it someday

Emulate 1-3 and the PSP games (and the MSX games while you’re at it). You’re on your own for MGS4 though. Is it even emulatable? I remember reading that it’s basically designed and programmed to only work for the PS3 so putting it other systems and hardware is completely out of the question. Doesn’t help that it’s obsessed with Sixaxis movement

All of those things you listed make the game worse except maybe the card key thing (the normal one, not the PAL key).

The Jackie Chan backflipping animu cutscenes are terrible too. Yeah the game is about giant robots and the concept of Snake's character and being sent in without any weapons is absurd, but the serious tone and relative groundedness of the ps1 version goes a long way towards making the stakes of the conflict have weight and all the real-world serious stuff have the impact Kojima probably intended.

I don't remember if Twin Snakes kept the ps1 original translation or replaced it with the autismo literal Japanese translation that Kojima demanded in the ps2-3 era, but if they replaced the original translation that's another knock against it. I love the MGS series immensely but it is really a shame that the guy that tastefully replaced some of that Kojima awkwardness and Japanese idioms that don't make sense in English with more natural phrasing got shitcanned because Kojima thinks he's a better writer than he actually is.

Same. I really like that youtube channel futursound productions, that guy is such a huge Kojima dicksucker and seems to be cut from a similar cloth in terms of intellectual /psuedo-intellectual wank that he makes all of those games seem infinitely more clever and relevant to real life events than they actually are. Listening to him explain to me why MGS4 is actually awesome (and not just a lazy and disappointing way of wrapping up a lot of really interesting plot threads conjured up in previous games) in a several hour long video is a lot more enjoyable than the act of playing MGS4.

Oh, it got replaced.

In the end, it doesn't matter. The only thing later games kept from Twin Snakes was the voice acting. Every time MGS1 is referenced, it's always as the PS1 original. I mean, MGS4 opens the Shadow Moses chapter with a literal 1:1 copy of the Heliport entry scene, in all its low-polygon glory.

It is a good series but its honestly pretty jarring considering the canon games go all the way back to the late 80's up to like 2016 or so if you want to play them all. They also do not even truly connect that well. They got holes in the lore or continuation that doesn't add up but worse than that to me is that the conclusion to this so called epic series is MGS4 and MGS4 was an absolute pile of crap of a game to me. The Twin Snakes retranslation had less to do with Kojima's autism and more to do with the kike localizer (Jeremy Blaustein) being a disrespectful cunt to Kojima and his staff (Scott Dolph and Satoshi Hirano in particular) behind the scenes, so they changed his work just enough so that they wouldn't had to pay royalties when they redid the voices for MGS1. A lot of Blaustien's inaccuracies, like Big Boss being in a coma when the original text said he was infertile, were still in the TTS translation.

The circle pad pro peripheral is a must. The funniest part of the 3ds version is the ability to turn any picture you've taken with the camera into a camo, and these camos are stupidly OP. I took a picture of a window from a dark room of my house, ended up making a suit that was basically white and light blue, and it had 95-100% coverage everywhere from the opening jungle to the walls of Groznij Grad.

It only plays at about 15-20fps though. It's a fun curiosity but the 3ds only complicates the already complex controls and the performance is total dogshit.

I'd wager that your DualShock 3 is in fact a chinkshit clone that looks like an official one. I have a "DualShock 3" I bought from Amazon, listed as manufactured by Sony, came in official looking packaging, pretty much indistinguishable from the real thing. But, it felt cheap, buttons would often get stuck, the caps on the analog sticks looked more flat than convex, L2/R2 triggers felt stiff to press, etc. At the time, I also thought it might have been bad manufacturing and Sony cheaping out. But one time, I had it plugged into my PC, and noticed in my PC bios that I had a USB device with some sort of generic "Shenzhen corporation" or something name on it, and I was thinking "what the fuck is that?". So, I decided to just head to a local GameStop, but a used DS3 (which feels waaay better than the Amazon one I bought, btw), and plug it into my computer. Sure enough, the bios shows the GameStop one as a USB device named "Sony DualShock 3". This was probably around 2014/2015 that I bought that Amazon one.

>I find it odd that the MGS HD collection was released on PS3 and 360 but not PC.
Konami released jack shit on PC during 7th gen. Only things I can think of (besides annual PES) are the Castlevania Lords of Shadow games, the Rocket Knight Adventures reboot (which was a small digital exclusive on console), Silent Hill Homecoming, Metal Gear Rising, and Metal Gear Solid 5 (which is a cross-gen game that people consider more 8th than 7th).

>lots of variety to the environments

MGS4 being episodic works this aspect to it's benefit, but the levels are all pretty damn small and short with little to nothing worthwhile to reward the player for exploration.

>written as a definitive ending to Solid Snake's storyline, wrapped up literally everything in a way that most franchises don't and included everything fans could ask for. Rex vs Ray, Eva, Big Boss, it covered all the bases

And it's a pretty shitty ending for the character, sure Rex vs Ray was the coolest shit to ever happen in MGS, but MGS4 plays a Gambit where Solid Snake is not cool anymore and makes him a bitter old man, not even the wise soldier, takes the Big Boss wanking to the point where it pulls his presence out of it's ass just to steal the show because somewhere around the years Kojima was jaded with Solid Snake and just took the deification of Big Boss a bit too serious, the only thing he missed was write a cult of BB in the series.
He forgot what made Solid Snake work as a character, to the point that he couldn't figure out how to write lines for him. Snake exchanges little to no dialog with it's opponents nor with the supporting cast. He's just... there, quips something, but never engages in a conversation. And things happen around him. I don't know I could rant a bit more, but I take issue with MGS4's treatment of Solid Snake and I cannot fathom why people never make a point out of it. Whenever a complain is leveled at MGS4 it's for it's sillyness or the ratio between gameplay/cutscenes.

I'm in the minority that dislikes 3 and prefers 4 to it only by a small margin.

Is there a plausible in-game explanation why the locations you visit in-game are called "The Middle East", "South America" and "Eastern Europe"? It always felt cheap and weird to me that they didn't use specifically named and defined locations when every other game in the series does.

Probably there wasn't enough military advice for MGS4 to give context and justification for choosing specific locations. Or if it was enough advice, probably they didn't wanted to put the effort into writing it because, in the context of the story, they just needed to design the fetch quest and no not specify places or locations so they couldn't be constrained by realism and just go through each setpiece.
