Anyone else miss the trend of Quake 1 maps using Quake 3 and Doom 3 textures? It seems to have fallen off over the past decade, with some rare exceptions (pic related).

It is a hard level. I remember getting my first distaste for pain elementals there, and while rocket launcher might be optional -- chaingunners trap is quite brutal (plain unfair some might say), sure way to die for a newbie. Most monsters are placed in such a way that makes it trivial for you to starve for health if you aren't extra careful enough.
Playing continuously with the spicy risk of losing all weapons on death, making save-states if it becomes unbearable and replaying levels which I've liked plenty enough saveless to give them a fair try -- that's how I usually go about playing Doom, but that's my own idea of fun.

There was some british(?) streamer I was watching when the initial version was released and he was doing this exact thing. Completely intent on fighting that shambler even though he clearly saw the opened portal implying escape, and started complaining about it being unfair. I don't know if there's a strain of Quake players who can't think of anything besides "kill thing in front of me" or if they're just very anal on getting 100% kills. Not like it matters, I recall the map's percentage going way beyond that.

Hey guys. I have a problem that's not directly related to Doom, but I don't think /pol/ or /adv/ know enough about it to help me out. I know that this is going to sound incredibly autistic, but I cannot function in social settings unless I imagine myself as a Doomguy. No, I don't go around saying "I'm berserker packin' man and a half! Rip and tear!" or try to hump walls or anything. I just feel myself with the overall demeanor of a space marine. I can pass off as a normie well with this. I choose hellspawn that already feed into my bloodthirsty tendencies. My main 3 are Imps (When I'm feeling quiet but confident), Cyberdemons (When I'm feeling a bit smug/cocky) and Pain Elementals (When I'm feeling a bit edgy). I also have a rotating list of demons that I can use. I've done Chaingunners, Revenants, Cacos, Former Humans, Mancubuses, Arachnotrons, etc... But my problem is, I have a Christmas party with my co-workers tonight, and I'm not sure which fiends I should perceive them as. I want to be a bit more outgoing and talkative than usual, but not TOO much. I had a bad experience with Arch-vile this spring, when I got a bit TOO confident, so I don't want to use him. I'd like to try some other Doom demon, but I'm not sure which one. I like Imps, but... I was actually thinking about Husks, but them being from REKKR makes them disapproved by Romero. Do you guys have any ideas that would make me more sociable and confident, but not too much so?

QC lets you change master server, but trying to set up ranked matches and practice makes you sit in matchmaking. At least practice gives up after 15 seconds and fills the server with bots, ranked matches will sit there forever if you're on a dead server like the Aus one. I dunno about Custom Game and Arcade matches, I haven't messed with those.

Jimmy's Earthless also has that d2twid-style, it has only 12 map demo released, but it's really good. Full wad probably later this year.

There is also megawad called 25 Years On Earth made to celebrate Doom 2's 25th birthday with very vanilla-style maps. I've played only third of it, but so far so good.

Recently released TNT Devilution has lot of d2twid crew behind it, so you might enjoy it.

I feel you too anon

slash movement in QC makes me fucking cum and I love her
got a few people to try quake 4 (I actually kinda like the look of the game) but it just didn't feel the same. QC straight up stopped working on my pc after putting 1000+ hours in. If I could i'd still play it. I stand by the game as an interesting experiment that could have been good if treated right. Also kinda jelly as i saw the quake 2 mg is now in and i loved that weapon.

I also like to play the vanilla version of QC:DE with the slow in slow out movement speed using Elena her hold to jump higher, crouch to drop faster movement while sr30-ing. It feels so fucking good but everybody still playing now switched over to q-zandronum version qc:de with other movements, but they changed hers. I get the appeal of the new one but it feels too jerky, stiff and sudden. The momentum based slow in slow out movement worked so well with her jump/crouch shit and that's gone now.

Truly no worse feel than being denied your favourite movement.

Went back to touch up a map I made a couple years ago, making it even more dickish. Hoping to sneak this into 94 Protons.
Tested with DSDA, with Plutonia.wad. If you're not good at finding secrets, you're gonna have a bad time.

Really liked it. You were right about the secrets, honestly think that if you don't get at least the SSG and Plasmagun you stand no chance, but at least they were the most obvious secrets. The other secrets are nice but not necessary, although imo getting the invuln comes a little too late since it's very difficult to take it in the middle of the biggest fight of the map.
I played on GZDoom (simply because DSDA-Doom wasn't running too well for me) and (picrel) this door ended up non-usable for me after the caco/pain elemental fight. I was at 1%, so I decided the safest bet was to trigger the teleporter and rush to the hub area for better cover, but this ended up making it impossible to go back in and get the required yellow key. I had to idclip. I don't believe there's any other way around, besides going through the blue-key fighting arena which I couldn't do without the yellow key.

Enjoyable map. The player can get pretty overpowered if they find all the secrets I think. I managed to beat it without secrets as a test. It honestly starts pretty hard then gets easier as you go playing like that. My favorite secret was the shootable painting because it felt relatively creative. I played with dsda doom and expereienced a big HOM on the crusher near the yellow key.

It's a footnote of a mapset. Plutonia was like an 8 level demo or so, with some maps which had been rejected from TNT for being too hard, and was offered pretty quickly to iD, and they thought it looked real good and would love to see it expanded to a full 32 levels.
PerdGate was offered at a later time, and I think iD didn't even take a look at it, presumably wanting to make sure that Final Doom would ship on time, and that 32+32 was already a very sizeable bundle.

It'd be a giant pain in the ass trying to implement mod support on centralised servers like QC currently has, you'd have to see local server support first. Even then, didn't id respond to requests for Doom '16 to have proper modding tools with "sorry, all the tools we use to build the game need a commercial-grade hardware setup"? I know there's a couple of threads about on Doomworld and ZDoom Forums saying that they did shit like not have a level editor for Eternal, and instead model the whole level in Modo and import it straight into the engine.

As much as I like Doom 2 megawads there is something so comfy about Doom 1 wads, especially if they use alpha textures as well. Currently playing through the Favillesco series. It's more or less a holistic gameplay overhaul that despite being a decade old now, still gets worked on to make it a very bloated soup mod with some questionable liberties taken, including a (optional) 'map enhancement script' for IWAD maps that more often than not fills levels with visual clutter. Also known for some weird quirks in the past like pic related; I'm pretty sure at one point chaingunners did less damage than in vanilla Doom too, and also counted the player as a monster which fucked with mods that gave random monsters elite-like modifiers and recolors.

For simply adding fancy gore and nothing else there's been stuff like Ketchup, NashGore, Bolognese, etc that you could probably fit on with the rest. In the past (and probably still now) there were people that tried to run BD with other mods which unsurprisingly ends in a broken mess for just thinking it adds only the gore. Or depending on certain mods, summoned boners.

I know Doom was designed with pistol start as the baseline and the standard way of playing, but what about Blood? On one hand saving weapons from previous levels leaves me with a ridiculous surplus in ammo throughout every episode but on the other hand placing the napalm aluncher as a supersecret literally at the very end of E1M1 seems completely counter-intuitive to the notion that the game should be played with pitchfork start. Like why even place the secret there then?

>The maps in Doom and Doom II were typically created so that the player could finish them from scratch. When Sandy Petersen was asked about the things he found disappointing in Doom, he said he felt the episodes were too easy because id designers did not properly take account the player's ability to carry ordnance from earlier levels. The gameplay testing was based mainly on pistol starts, separately for each level. According to Sandy Petersen, "Most people started levels with some kind of significant equipment. However, almost all our playtesting was done starting each level with just a pistol. We made the game too easy for the average player."
>Arguably, the most striking consequence is seen in E3M8: Dis where the spiderdemon is practically powerless if the player has found a BFG9000 somewhere in the episode. If the player has managed to keep the weapon along with its ammunition and ultimately uses it against the boss monster, the battle will be dealt with ease – one may consider this anticlimactic, given that it is the final endeavor of the game. The intended challenge of the level is experienced only when the player fights the spiderdemon with the weaponry that is provided in the map.

Blood has a ridiculous amount of said bones though. A lot of games after Doom had a better idea of what the map progression would be so they're much better balanced towards a continuous playthrough. Blood in particular may be harder "pistol starting" than others due to higher difficulties increasing enemy spawns and their health.

you're mixing things up.
in neither case did the designers expect for pistol-start to be a deliberate playstyle. but the encounters were designed with worst-case scenario in mind (this includes playing continuously but avoiding weapon pickups and spending all ammo and health). so, since the combat is beatable without carrying over a full backpack, pistol-starting is the way to experience the game's balance "as authored".
in contrast, Quake isn't beatable without the runes, the weapon drops don't repeat and the levels tell you to go back if you skipped a pickup. so you can be fairly certain it wasn't tested with shotgun-start in mind, even if technically it's beatable.

I'm going with a no here, even though you do Pitchfork start when you die in the DOS version. You already pointed it out in your post, there's weapon pickups right at the end of the level. Also, in E1M2, there's flare ammo scattered around, yet no flare gun pickup anywhere to be found. You get the flare gun in E1M1, so why would they just meaninglessly give you ammo for a weapon you can't even get?

One such examples I personally experienced - several monsters in Bloodstain wad teleporting beyond map boundaries, 2 cybies encounter at the end of TNT2 is completely defused since they spawn on top of their confinements and can be easily disposed of, because their meatshields do not spawn until you take the key.
There are several levels I don't remember exactly which where voodoo fuckery Mark did causes certain maps to autofinish in 30 sec. because the doll takes on the scripts from player and passes right through the blocks.
Corpses gibbed in tight confined spaces STILL have the chance to remain solid and block all passage. Mark attested it was fixed, but it's not.
