You have to remember in 2001 you could count the amount of games that had “good” voice acting on one hand. Like many productions at the time, there was a language barrier between the Japanese directors and the English voice talent. What you end up getting are voices that fit the characters, but lack a lot of the subtle nuances that we think of when we think of good voice acting. James Arnold Taylor makes a great Tidus.

I'm about halfway into a playthrough of FFX International with an undub patch applied and every Japanese seiyuu's vocal performance so far has more or less the same tone/timbre as the English VAs from my memory of playing it years ago.

I was a little surprised when Seymour showed up with a familiarly breathy tone of voice, just as I remembered his English actor's performance. For some reason I was expecting a much deeper voice (see Raiden's seiyuu from MGS2 compared to his VA)

The English casting team for FFX really did knock it out of the park, despite all the technical/linguistic difficulties they faced when it comes to translation/timing/line delivery.

When you get to Mt. Gagazet Tidus is having an internal monologue about feeling bad about promising to revisit the Moonflow or something. He says something along the lines of
“I wanted to see it again when all of this was over. With Yuna by my side.”
He says with Yuna by my side incredibly fast compared to everything else. It’s jarring.

If you're referencing the meme, no.
It's perceived as "bad" because it was awkward and shown out of context, especially leaving out Wakka's remark at the end, asking if they're retarded.

It probably wouldn't have been memed as hard as it was if Tidus' inner monologue explained how he was feeling at that moment like he'd been doing throughout.
I feel some characters could've been directed a little bit better during certain scenes compared to the Japanese (namely Rikku, when arguing with Wakka), but the differences in tone work well enough for the most part and get the point across.

There are some lines I found weird with how quickly they spit it out after a break in the sentence that I never understood as a pre-teen. This anon >>8780185 picked up on too.

Yes, in context of the scene even if the VA was perfect it should sound forced and awkward in that way but even if you look at new SE games like KH3 or SoP even good voice actors are directed to talk in this weird unnaturally stilted way. It can be endearing but I wouldn't call it good

I'm not shitting on Jap VA performances when I say this: Jap Yuna just sounds like your generic, by-the-numbers, nervous, pure saint trying to do her best that I'm sure the same VA is casted for with that same Jap character archetype.

I feel Eng Yuna does a better job with sounding shy, reserved, while also kind, but she sounds too sleepy/tired, almost giving off a "sigh-like" performance throughout, I'd attribute that to the direction she was given.

Even if that's the case there are still line reads where the cast is talking amongst each other, awkwardly sped up to match with the Jap timing that you can tell when comparing the two.
Tidus defending Rikku after Wakka berates her is one example.

They're both breathy but Seymour sounds far less flamboyant than he does in English. And yes I know the voice he has in Japanese is still kinda flamboyant by Japanese standards but it's not you know, THAT voice they use for gay dudes.

Also I would say that the big difference is Tidus, James Arnold Taylor himself noted there is a difference between himself and Masakazu Morita in terms of how much more confident he sounds in Japanese while he tried to go for a little more fun-loving and jovial.

No, the actors themselves are all really good actually and they did a great job with what they had to work with.

The problem was simple: for the English/international version, they didn't synch the voices because it was an early example of a 3D game with extensive voice acting. Instead, the actors had to squeeze in the lines of dialogue into the space that was allotted for the Japanese original. (Kingdom Hearts, another Square game, appears to do the same thing, but with far better results because they redid lip synching for the English version) Consequently, the English voice actors frequently have to speak their lines in a quick awkward manner. Not because they were rushing, but because they had to and were directed to. (James Arnold Taylor said that when he recorded his dialogue, a screen of the the part of the game he was recording was displayed so he could synch it up accurately.)

Neither did the international version of Final Fantasy X. The international versions had the English dubs for both, and that was the point. You can play Final Fantasy X international with Japanese voices, but that's because it was modded to be that way, hence, the Fan-Made Undub Version. The Final Fantasy X International that Japanese people played when it first came out in Japan had English voices. Same with Final Fantasy X-2.
