Hey /vr/,

What's your current translation holy grail and why? What draws you to this specific game and what do you think the chances are that it will get a translation?

Bonus points if you can remember where you saw the game and if you also mention a game that was a previous HG that got translated.

Mine is Wachenröder. Which an isometric strategy JRPG with a beautiful steampunk aesthetic.

>>OK, so I have been following this game for awhile as I'd heard a translation was possible. Now, googling it seems that a patch has been released in January and is in the process of being polished up. Well, that's ironic. Finding out my holy grail game got translated in the middle of posting a new thread. I refuse to delete this now. I will post another in the thread.

OK, so since I fucked up on the first one. My next choice is probably London Seirei Tanteidan. Another SJRPG that has beautiful colorful 2D sprite work that was clearly inspired by Sherlock Hound. I saw a youtube vid on it here: https://youtu.be/yv7EkhoP6lU

There are some online posts saying they will translate it but nothing yet from what I can see.

My holygrail for years was Mizzurna Falls which finally came out. I'm playing it but fuck me the controls are garbage.

Omakase Savers. I love this game. It has a very comfy atmosphere and a goofy plot. The combat is a top down shooter with FMV clips playing out wen you attack. It's just fun. Relatively playable without understanding Japanese, but a translation would complete the experience.

A proper translation of the PC or Playstation/Playstation 2 versions of Legend of Heroes III, IV, and V, AKA the Gagharv Trilogy. The PSP versions released in the west had very poor translations and dumbed down the combat significantly. Despite all that I had a blast playing them which is why I'd like to see what the far superior versions of the game are like.

Metal Max 2 on SFC.

It's one of the only ones in the series that has never been translated, outside of that touchscreen DS one nobody cares about. I know the DS remake has been translated but it's almost an entirely different game.

Apparently someone called dibs on translating this like 2 decades ago so at this point someone else should just do it

I found that I wasn't really happy with where I was playing games in JP until I started to read a lot of light novels in my free time. So probably 2ish years? Maybe longer than that. I can't really remember.
The amount of text/vocabulary in an average game isn't exactly staggering by any means, but having extra overhead and millions of characters consumed goes a long way to helping you be able to enjoy games with minimal effort rather than reaching for the dictionary every other text box.

>I ended playing it using Retroarch AI translation tool
How did that work out? I tried the AI translation tool a few times and thought it was cool but never completed a game with it.

Also, when Metal Max 3 was translated two years ago, a few anons were asking why 2 wasn't translated instead and apparently it's like a remake of 1 or something very similar to it? Is that true or is 2 a different game entirely?

>> No.8779483

>>8779467
>How did that work out?

It only worked because
>I had already played the DS remake first
>I used a walkthrough for help (item/equipment names or when I was stuck that one time)
>I had already played the first game

Otherwise the AI translation is OK but with MM2 it doesn't work well because all the dialogues in incased into the main menu, meaning that sometimes the AI doesn't make the difference between menu commands (Talk, Search, Equipment, etc) and they end up in the middle of a sentence, it's kind of a mess.
You can probably scratch playing the remake first and get by though

>apparently it's like a remake of 1 or something very similar to it? Is that true or is 2 a different game entirely?

No it's a sequel. Not the same characters but it's a direct sequel some years after the events of 1, it's not a remake at all

You retarded cuck. Pokemon is FOR 5 year olds, not 5 years of studying JP to play.

It took me 1 year to learn the language/hiragana/katakana enough to have conversations and travel with ease. It took about 3 years to be fluent with all their most used writing in Kanji and the small intricacies to not sound like a foreigner. Games hardly use anything I learned past the first 1-2 years outside the more basic hiragana/katakana. Most are learned the first 6-12 months as the same characters are used over and over.

No games or Manga are using raw Kanji to scare away users. Or they use the most overused symbols. Even JP born and raised people don't know the entirety of Kanji since they don't need it.

tactics ogre is my fav childhood game, i replayed it so many times, i prefer the snes version and cv vastly over psp one vision.
i really want to play cv in english cause it has new scenes and dialog and shit, i thought of learning japanese for this game.

the base snes version has a fan translation from jp to english but literally nobody seems to want or can translate the chronicle valeria mod, i even offered people money.

i heard someone saying the hack used up every little byte in the entire game so that a translation is literally impossible, while someone else claimed its possible but would take years.

Not if you study properly. I've been studying Japanese for about 11 years and I can watch movies, play games, etc. usually with no issue. I'm far from the most dedicated learner and the mostly just studied while commuting to university/work. You could get to the same level as me in far less time if you really went at it.

Knowing Japanese is great for retro gaming, by the way. Because Japan has maintained a strong second hand market for decades, retro games have remained in circulation and haven't experienced anything near the inflation in price they have in the West. Many games which would cost fifty or a hundred dollars you can get the Japanese version for a tenth of that.

There are plenty of games like Fatal Frame and Sekiro that really don't hold back (do you know the reading for 夜叉戮の御霊降ろし, for example, without looking it up?) but even your average game will freely use kanji that aren't considered to be especially obscure in my experience (I've been playing games in Japanese exclusively for years).

>(do you know the reading for 夜叉戮の御霊降ろし, for example, without looking it up?
The only one that I required to look up was 戮.
I recognized 夜叉 from 犬夜叉 (and also the Blaze clone from Bare Knuckle)
御 shows up a lot as an honorific prefix, 霊 means spirit and 降ろし is the -i form of the five-stem verb 降ろす (to dispel something)

Yeah it's a very barebones SRPG with incredibly bad balance, the main gameplay gimmick of weapons overheating simply does not work and is completely meaningless. You also get a bunch of characters that are ridiculously busted and the power gap between those characters and everyone else on the roster is just plain absurd. The story also feels like it got dropped halfway through act 1.

I remember looking through some Japanese saturn fan mags of the time and Wachenroder got a ton of hype built around it in the months leading up to release but ended up getting surprisingly mediocre reviews, and were talking about a famitsu style mag where every big exclusive for the saturn got great scores.

US names are confusing, but Metal Saga was how they renamed the whole series. A bunch of JP-only games released under that name, although PS2 is the best one by far and might as well be considered the true successor to the first two games.

There's another Saturn JRPG coming from meduza team. Could be either Terra Phantastica, Tactics Ogre, or Solo Crisis.

You overestimate the average person. I know for a fact that people rather get their music compressed from some shitty YouTube downloader than even look for other higher quality free downloads. And if they do get them from somewhere else or legally, they don't even know the difference.
This applies more or less to the average player and even to the average anon.

Not knowing or caring isn't the same as being unable to hear the difference when asked to look for it. All I was saying was that you can't make a such a broad statement because it is partly untrue. Almost nobody will be able to tell a direct 320kbps MP3 encode its lossless source. That doesn't mean you can say the same about MP3 in general. That's not how it works. guess it's less about ignoring and more about not speaking their moontounges and thus not caring about those games.

95% of worthwhile Russian games were released in the west, one way or another, and there wasn't much of a gaming scene in the 90s to speak of.

How many projects are there to translate Chinese games into English? There's a clear bias.
With that said, I get the feeling the situation is slowly changing regarding some modern games in China.

Ever heard of the Taiwanese? Also, the CCCP made this little game called Tetris, don't know if you have ever heard about it, I don't think it's a big leap to at least consider the possibility of China having something like that. And even if they don't, we don't know retards like you start crying.

PowerPros.
Literally any game will do.
>but there are MLB Pros
you don't understand, I want my Japanese flavored high school baseball, not localized to be american baseball.
Granted MLB localization is damn good and they really tried hard, cause only two countries care about baseball after all.
But I want my Japanese flavour cause I'm filthy weeb.
This game has like 20+ entries for every console out there.
The only thing Konami still good for.*
Pretty please.

*well aside bomberman, it was pretty good.

Pic related was posted less than a month ago. Unless you're talking about the official localization that Sony refused to give the green light, in which case yeah I'm obviously aware that we aren't getting new PSP games in 2022

Amaranth series would be awesome. But between the problematic in 2 and the fact that 4 doesn't work properly (bad dump ? Emulation issue ?) it's very unlikely.
Branmarker would be nice too.

No Magic.

Instead you use guns and have to keep track of ammunition.

Because the people doing the programming were more familiar with the Saturn hardware. It also didn't require having to rework the game to go from a GD-ROM to a CD-ROM.
