Was talking with a friend the other day, we were chitchatting about old school RPG when he came up with Phantasy Star, seemed surprised when I told him I had never played a Phantasy Star of my life and called me a casual scum, how do I prevent this? Which Phantasy Star should I play first?

As for the rest, Phantasy Star threads

This is probably my favorite OST in the whole genesis era.

OP, you should start with the first one and finish them all

You should play IV at least.

If you're looking to really avoid being casual scum play 2, or the original with the retranslation for the glorious FM Chip.

>> No.877639

You should probably play the Mega Drive ones
The first one is okay, but I wouldn't really recommend it.

Just play the whole SMS/GEN games (well, I guess PSIII can be ignored), since they are all connected, playing them all will enrich your experience greatly.

IV is one of the best JRPGs and is a must-play, I and II have historical value.

The first games were far ahead of its time, but still felt decidedly archaic and counter intuitive. I love the experimental design put into these.
PS2 is probably the hardest jrpg ever made.

Have a cute bunny.

>> No.877664

PS4 modernized the gameplay with loads of cutscenes done VN style, 3 is a mess and should be avoided.
If you want to understand what the hell is going on in the plot at the beginning of 1 you will need to find a copy of the manual or look up the story online. It's a bit more complex than it seems for a game of the time.
Also, if you're playing PS1 or 2, you will definitely need graph paper.

Hardly. Just equip two shields and spam items.

It's too bad they butchered PS3, the plot was so grandios and epic.

Play Phantasy Star IV. While it's in the same canon as the rest of the series, you can easily get the story without playing them. It stands alone just fine.

Plus, it's one of the best JRPGs of its era. Fantastic game.

If you love PS4, then play 1 and 2 as well.

>> No.878737

>and called me a casual scum,
Maybe you should point out he plays a shittastically written weaboo scifi RPG that doesn't even let you select which enemies in a group you want to attack and is effectively one of the worst and most boring RPGs in existence. Though there are a few catchy tunes in the series.

>> No.878743

what's that PS in OP's pic?

was there a PS for windows 3.1?
or is it an emulator?

>> No.878749

>>877652
>PS2 is probably the hardest jrpg ever made.
Phhhhthahahahahahahaha!! God no. The start is fairly hard, but every monster after that is damn weak. The only real danger lategame is the entire party being smacked with sleep spells (which ends in a game over if the entire party is sleeping). That and Neifirst (who actually hits harder than Dark Force).

All of PS2's difficulty is in the length and size of the dungeons, but once you get the Crescent Gear, you can heal up for free in battle and save your TP.

Phantasy Star 4 on the other hand is much more difficult, as monsters do masses of damage, TP costs are cruel, and the bosses hit like a ton of bricks. The dungeons are much shorter, yes, but the monsters more than make up for that.

tl;dr Phantasy Star 2 is fucking easy.

>>878686
It had major potential, but they blew it. Even now multi-generational games are unheard of. I can name five at best. The only "modern" one is Agarest, which honestly isn't that great.

TL;DR: Play them in order from I to IV, but skip III. Just read a summary on the internet for it. The series follows a very tight canon and characters from earlier games often appear in later games.

PSI laid the groundwork for everything in the series and is the most open-ended.
PSII is hardest difficulty-wise and the darkest plot-wise.
PSIII can and should be avoided but introduces Wren the android.
PSIV is best overall in terms of story and gameplay, taking the best from all of them. Easiest in the series but is not Kirby easy(if you want to ramp up the difficulty, there are good romhacks for that). My only gripe, unlike the previous games, party members don't stay around forever.

Best way to play I & II are either Phantasy Star Collection on GBA or downloading the roms.

PS I has an excellent translation patch here(use it on a Japanese version for superior music): http://www.romhacking.net/reviews/861/#review

Phantasy Star Four is a game you can put alongside Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy 6, Secret of Mana, that rpg with the kids i can't think of the name etc.

1 and 2 are very tedious, and closer to 8 bit games then 16 bit games.( they might even be 8 bit i dunno)

PS1, like other jrpgs of it's time, is full of what I call text cutscenes though, which really isn't that different from watching a cut scene in a later FF game... in fact I sometimes find them more annoying, especially when the game feels the need to tell me the same thing 5 different ways.

for games like the FF series and Chrono Trigger, I could see this, but Phantasy Star is kinda like... to continue your analogy of sci-fi films... Close Encounters of the First Kind, it was some what popular it it's time, most people have heard of it, but not that many people that didn't see/play it at the time have actually seen/played it.

Play 1, 2 then 4. You will really appreciate 4 that way. Unlike FF there is s contuguous narrative at work. There's a PS2 remake of PS1 available if you'd like.
