From that 3D fighting craze, Last Bronx is one of those that are barely talked. How was it? since we're at it, how would you rate the non-Virtua Fighters/non-Namco fighters of that era? Any favorites?

Last Bronx is one of my favorite 3D fighting games on Saturn. Yoko's the best girl. I think AM3 always gets overshadowed by AM2 but I feel AM3 games are better. Similar to how I prefer the Soul Edge/Calibur over Tekken, Last Bronx is better than Virtua Fighter.

Sonic the Fighters is fucking great and I don't care what anyone says
>Cast of 8 characters who all have fairly unique gimmicks differentiating them
>Resource management that actually punishes you for overextending and losing your resources
>Custom combo mode

I like Last Bronx a lot actually. As I understand it was actually decently popular at the time so it's a wonder why a sequel never materialized.

>From that 3D fighting craze, Last Bronx is one of those that are barely talked.

It came out in late 1997 in NA, when the Saturn was almost dead in the home console market. Also worth noting that the Saturn Game was ported to Windows 9x in 1998, and was released under the Expert Software label:

Last Bronx on the PC also contained an option to use the Model 2 arcade models instead of the Saturn ones, and has D3D rendering.

Sad that Sonic the Fighters Saturn port was cancelled. Though Bean and Bark made it into Fighters MegaMix on the Saturn as unlockable characters:

I can't think of another weapon-based fighting game set in modern times, it's always set in the old world or the future. LB was unique enough to make a series out of it

I kinda like the Hold button of 1 more than the Free button of later releases. Deflecting strikes or holding limbs makes it look more like the old martial arts movies comparatively to the straight-up counters the Free button created. It was the Saturn's DOA1 which got me into the series and made me glad I owned a Dreamcast for its upcoming sequel. The series pretty much was the system seller that convinced me to get an Xbox and 360 even though I quit videogames once the Dreamcast run was over.

No, Last Bronx did actually have a live action movie made after the games. It was a Japanese only straight to video movie.

Last Bronx was sick, but I've mostly played it single player anyway, so not sure how it would hold up tournament-wise etc. nowadays. As in, whether's its a competent, balanced fighting game. But it was fun and it got released right as I was becoming a weeb, so I still remember the intro amv. Soundtrack's bangin'.

I used to play with my buddies all the time pre covid lock downs. We haven't had much time to regroup since but it's a good game to play with people.
>how it would hold up tournament-wise etc. nowadays
Oh please modern fighting game tournaments are just a bunch of e-shills looking to profit off streamer fame while sucking off the major publishers. They go on about balance all they want but they wouldn't know a genuinely good game if it super combo'd them. Tournament players and e-sports basically ruined every genre they were a part of in their search of balance.
