Speaking of Sega. Old Sega-16 interview with Tom Kalinske, where he said that SOA had first dibs on the N64 hardware. But since SOA didn't develop hardware, they had SOJ engineers look at it and reject it. The MIPS team even tried to fix all the issues at SOJ had problems with, and showed it to them again, which was rejected a second time.

>makes the 3DO look graceful by comparison.

The 3DO was an actual attempt at making a game console, from game industry and hardware vets. It may have not panned out as well as they would have hoped, but I still feel like the 3DO had some good ideas that were not fully realised. Licensing out the tech to other companies to manufacture was a good idea in theory, and it still is. But it did boost up the cost. The 3DO hardware was not bad for 1993. The Chameleon really looks like a con job by a bunch of people who had no idea what they were doing. Look at the hardware under the clear shell. I think someone pointed out that it was a literally PCI card of some kind, just to fool investors into believing that they had a WIP prototype. It looks like a networking card. They didn't fabricate that hardware. They could have shoveled a SBC in the case, and made it look convincing.

I'd note that as the main reason the console failed. Pricing is incredibly important for a console to be competitive, and the need to subsidize consoles at least at first is key to that. It was the complete wrong strategy for the market.

I’ve many questions
1. What was the keyboard needed for? Did they intend to bring over MSX games too. There’s virtually no NES games I can think of off the top of my head that would need a keyboard and mouse besides maybe stuff like Deja Vu and Shadowrun, even though they came out years after
2. Going by the tape player, would games have been released as cassettes a la the Speccy/some MSX games? Would they have had to convert games to run on them?
3. The early controllers look cool but that singular square disc plate D-Pad thing looks remarkably uncomfortable. Are those buttons actually made of metal or are they just shiny plastic?
4. Is that a zapper next to them? It looks like it’s been folded in on itself kinda, which I suppose is pretty good for storage
5. Joystick is neat though I can’t imagine there’s many games that it would really work well with besides maybe Top Gun and Captain Skyhawk. The controller still works completely fine for those games too so

>I think someone pointed out that it was a literally PCI card of some kind, just to fool investors into believing that they had a WIP prototype.

That’s exactly what it was. From what I remember of the whole debacle, they were required to showcase a working prototype to Indiegogo or whoever so they could receive all their funding which never came because they never sent any photos. When they showed the thing off in public at some trade show, the model they showcase was found to be just a SNES motherboard stuffed into a Jaguar shell with a flash cart plugged in. When they finally provided pictures of the interior of the thing on their Facebook page, someone spotted instantly that it was a graphics card poorly jammed into a Jaguar shell. You can’t even make this up

I agree that it ballooned up the price of the 3DO. But it was probably the only way for them to get it off the ground. AMD and Nvidia have been using this model for decades. I think Intel has been looking into farming out their CPU's to other manufacturing companies. This model would work better now than back then.

>I imagine the keyboard and tape player are more for general-purpose computing functions. Remember, the NES is based off of the Japanese Family Computer, which was more than just a game system.

Basically, when Nintendo wanted to get into the US market, they were worried that retail outlets would not want to sell another game console after the '1983 atari crash', and that was a thing, but only in NA and only for the console market. so they thought they could package it as a computer that could play games. They were probably going to adapt the Family Basic keyboard.

This Dreamcast inspired ps2 design looks so much better than the shitty faulty black tower with flimsy disc tray. What were they thinking? They didnt want to be embarrassed that the dreamcast was a superior designed console with a built in modem. sony wanted to fuck over consumers buy forcing you to buy a multitap.

Nah, the PS2 looks like your typical Pizza Box PC format that was popular in the 90s.
If any, I think Sony's original idea was for the PS2 to be more PC-like than a console, considering how they even sold a Linux distro as an option.

The Atari Falcon MicroBox is a beautiful looking piece of tech from Atari's computer division. It was designed to stand up, or sit down. Sony did reference the design Falcon Microbox in the patents for the PS2.

The Chameleon was going to be a mainstream, easily accessible FPGA console that would allow the average person to have access to the authentic experience of actual hardware without having to worry about all the hassle that comes with using aging OEM hardware or upscalers to use modern displays. It's a way to preserve how these old games were meant to be played while also having new, reliable physical games available for everyone. Combine this with cartridge adapters to use original games and the ability for indie retro devs to enter into a creator-friendly console ecosystem along with licensed compilation rereleases of classic games and you have a sensible all in one solutions that brings retro gaming into the modern age.
None of these bodes well for resellers, who would suddenly stop seeing huge returns from exploiting the market as they've been allowed to do. Known resellers like Pat the NES Prick and RGT85 make thousands of dollars a year selling games at conventions, games that their fans often donate to them for some unfathomable reason. All they had to do was claim the Chameleon was a scam and feed their legions of mindless drone a steady stream of misinformation. They did a wonderful job of convincing the average person that this was all a scam and that the whole team was ill-intentioned. It worked, and sure enough they've ramped up their stranglehold on the market to ridiculous levels in recent years.
There's some solutions that seem to be trying to fill the gap the Chameleon left; stuff like the MiSTer and the Evercade are seeing some success but none of these attempt anything close to the scope and vision of the Chameleon. In the end, the team were made pariahs before they even had a chance and the YouTuber elite continue to bleed every longtime and newcomer retro game fan dry.

I think the Zip Drive was more of storage and not for playing games off of. I remember reading somewhere that you can have "DLC" for games and have game saves on it. It probably could be used for playing small games and indie games.

>Zip disks aren't big enough to contain games
100MB would been enough for demos, small games, and indie titles. The PlayStation had an Indie Dev unit that you saved your games to the memory card.

It was mainly spearheaded by Sega of America. For two things mainly.

#1 being mass storage. Place to back up your VMU saves, files you download online, dlc, etc.

#2 was to use it for “consumer” end development. A competitor to the net yaroze, or Bandai wonder witch. That sorta thing. This eventually became the final plan. With the idea of it being used for anyone with a Dreamcast just for storage kinda being turned away.

They basically finished it. Iomega already started production for the things, and then Sega of Japan saw it and was like “what no that’s stupid, plus no game devs even know about it to put compatibility in their games” (even though compatibility with games specifically was never really the point) and then SOJ pulled the plug.

There’s a few working units floating around, and a ton of the branded zip discs. But yeah blame Sega of Japan on that one

That's about it. The Japanese branch made kick ass games but had the management skills of a potato. The American branch marketed their consoles and games to success, but they were not allowed to make any management decisions, only abide by whatever tortured insanity Sega of Japan came up with. There's plenty of those from both the execs and developers, from the Genesis to the Dreamcast.

Those aren't real controllers. They are just guidelines from Apple, for what they want the button layout to look like for their gamepad API. Apple had a basic gamepad layout with just a d-pad and two shoulder buttons. And an advanced layout with 4 shoulder buttons, two analogue sticks, and hidden iOS functionality, like gyroscopic movement, tilt, motion controls, feedback rumble, etc.
