... Is it good ? ... Is it bad ? We need to discuss this more, much much more. It is more important than you realize.

It’s an excellent sequel and a classic in its own right. I love it and wish there was more 2D Zelda stuff like it

>> No.8766354

It's certainly an acquired taste. I like it as much as the first game now. Zelda 2 becomes fun as hell when you understand how the combat works. And Hyrule actually feels like a kingdom now, like there are towns with people you can talk to. Also amazing atmosphere for an 80s game. Overall it's no less of a classic than Zelda 1 and A Link to the Past

>> No.8766374

Conceptually, I like it. I am ambivalent towards playing it.

>> No.8766417

haven't played it much, but it seems like a perfectly good game...just nothing like the original zelda, or really much like anything that came after it.

play the disk version with a fixed translation romhack, if there is one. that's probably the best thing to do.

Yeah I prefer the disk version too because it's easier

It's like a beta version in comparison though...

It's awesome. Kinda surprised they've never tried remaking it even once, not that it needs it though.

its good! impossible to complete by today standards and short attention spans (mine included).

a lot of great thing were first seen here, so much that OoT borrows many of them, like hyrule field monsters not appearing if you stay on the roads

Zelda games don't get remade often. There are only 3 remakes: OoT, MM and LA. As much as I love Zelda 2 I think it's literally the last /vr/ Zelda they'd consider remaking. People are crazy about Oracles and Minish Cap

It's obviously good and a standout, unique title for its time and all time. There's no debate about that. There are a few shitty things about it though:
>ugly-ass overworld tiles
>lives
>some of the overworld mazes suck dick
>knights seem like awesome opponents til you learn the genius strategy of jump stabbing
>progression is a little hard to intuit at times

True, but the FDS version has some truly soulful wavetable sound effects.

>> No.8766748

Play the Amada's Curse hack. Top tier.

>> No.8766890

I loved every aspect of it but I don't think it's something I can enjoy on a second replay, mainly because I already saw everything it had to offer. Maybe after a couple years when I've forgotten about it... I have a list of some Zelda 2 likes from some other threads and am considering trying them out soon.

>> No.8766910

Honestly I'd recommend a Redux hack just for cutting down on the amount of exp needed for everything. Zelda II gets good when you're actually able to weave through enemies like a badass.

Thank Christ, sparring with every single one of them would be a nightmare.

>> No.8767352

The problem with Zelda 2 is that it's too punishing. Enemies hit hard right from the start and unlike in other Zelda games they don't drop hearts. Yes, you have the shield and heal magic, but even magical energy depletes fast, and then you're stuck farming magic refills from blobs and other shitty respawning enemies unless you want to go back to town. Much of the tedium would be cut down by simply bringing back hearts drops, or at least giving every kind of enemies magic drops.

It's hands down the best 2D Zelda

>and then you're stuck farming magic refills from blobs and other shitty respawning enemies

I never even considered doing that, or developed any awareness that it could be done, when I repeatedly played through this game as a kid. It's not tedious if, like a child, you refrain from taking unnecessary damage all the time.

You are going to take damage regardless of how careful you are, especially the first times playing. So you either Game Over and trek all the way back from the castle or you farm blobs.

But now I'm sure you're gonna claim that as a child you beat the game with no continues and 0 damage the first time you played.

>> No.8767491

Well no you can use red flasks from statues, ladies in towns, fairies on the field, fairies in dungeons, and occasional unplanned blue flasks dropped by enemies. Also you can refill your resources by dying, as long as you don't do it too many times per cave/palace. I died plenty as a kid - just not enough to make it tedious. Cos I had got gud, it seems. I dunno. I think it's a good game. Zelda 2 is it good? I think it's good

Zelda 2 matters a lot and needs our talk always.

I like that there are at least two different races of reptile-person in the game. The bird-people, too, seem to be fairly smart. Could they have secret bird-people and reptile-people towns somewhere? Link should be able to find one and learn some kind of rock-throwing technique there.

If you are a lover of Zelda II you should check out Phoenotopia Awakening. It's what Zelda 2 would be if Nintendo had kept going like with A Link to the Past, Nintendo hard too if you don't mess with the difficulty slider they patched in because of complaints.

it's okay, but I honestly kinda think the original flash version was better; a lot of the stuff they added feels extraneous to me and like it exists solely to justify the remake. I just wish that instead of a full remake they'd made a sequel that incorporated a streamlined recap of the first game as the first chapter.

>> No.8769235

It's funny how people paint it as a black sheep when it set a lot of precedents for later entries.

So was OOT really, they didn't change much about the game other than removing lots of bugs/glitches and increasing the polygon count.

Really, the closest thing we've gotten to a "remake" in the Zelda franchise was MM on 3DS, because they actually changed a LOT about the game, whereas the other "remakes" were just graphical updates with very minor changes.

i think the nature of 3D exploring allowing you to easily disregard the road and the fact that the monsters only appear at night kept this hidden for almost everybody
