Literally what is the point of games that do this? If you're going to prompt me to press start, make it so that only the start button works. Otherwise, just prompt to press any button. Prompting to press start but then also accepting other inputs is just horrible. Also, if you're going to prompt me to press any button, then L3 and R3 should be accepted as valid inputs also. It seems like half of the games that prompt for "any button" don't accept the clickable sticks as buttons.

Confirms that the controller works before starting the game for retarded devs that jump straight from there to the game without letting you access the options menu first.

Better than "PRESS ARCANE RETARD SYMBOL"
The rebranding of the start and select buttons has been a disaster for gaming. It used to be uniform, now every fucking console has its own special snowflake label for those buttons.

X-Men 2 on the Genesis has a cold open. Not even the Sega logo appears first. You turn the console on, and immediately after the bios screen on the Genesis, you are thrown immediately into the first level of the game with a random X-Man (you don't even get to choose, and there's like 7 playable characters).

Most games that have a Press Start screen let you press A or the console's confirm button, exercise civil disobedience
>>8766507
It's actually a way older games set seeds for their random functions. You need several different random timers going concurrently just for enemy AI and such (and if they all used one they'd move in synchronized patterns, which is why many is good), so having them each be set by human timing on 3-4 stages of menu input before reaching gameplay did it. They didn't have internal clocks, every boot was the same, so some source of random is needed; otherwise hitting live gameplay instantly will cause a completely fixed consistent pattern to show. Newer games do not need it, it's just convention now.
