Don't play on hard, either do normal or serious. You don't get the double ammo that serious has if you play on hard so some people say it's actually a worse experience.
Look for secrets, they will help a bunch.
Get good with the pistols so you can stun kamikazes that get up close. It'll stop them for a second and hopefully give you enough space to kill them outside of their explosion radius.
There are tons of traps. Keep an eye out.

Thanks for all the tips. I've played the first three levels so far and it's alright. Moving a low slower than in Doom is something I still have to get used to. So far my biggest problem is that the enemies blend in way too well, it feels like most of the time I don't even see them until they've already gotten a free shot at me. I'm playing the classic version on normal difficulty btw.

For a little while now I've been interested in finding ways to trigger things with the death of an enemy. I found a way to do it with Boom a while ago but more recently I've finally found a way to do it in a vanilla compatible way. Here's a map I made to demonstrate it. For vanilla doom2

It's still not completely flexible because the enemies aren't allowed to move outside a single container sector and it can't trigger every action, but it's still better than any other method I know of for vanilla. A more detailed explanation is in the txt file.
Originally this map was going to be for 94 protons but since it relies on some custom lumps and was designed with vanilla in mind it isn't really suited for that project in the end. Instead I'd like to contribute this map to the "/vr/ mondo project" since I think only one other thing has been submitted so far.

Don't go into the game with the same kind of mindset as Doom 2 as far as weapons are concerned. The shotguns are powerhouses, but they're also really slow and you're going to get swarmed with enemies later on.

I strongly dislike secrets that trivialize encounters or resource economy. Romero's Quake maps are really bad about this, with potentially interesting fights negated by a quad to the side.
also, "100% run" sounds like it's supposed to be a challenge, and instead the knowledge of secrets is more akin to cheating. "punishing secrets" is a great solution to this.
I can't imagine deliberately avoiding encounters in Serious Sam, but apparently that's how some people play it? sounds lame. why even play a shooter if you want to avoid combat?

I don't think there's something wrong with using secrets as a way to make encounters easier as long as the secret is not obvious and takes actual effort to find. My philosophy is

>Hit a wall with some really tough battle
>Try doing it over and over again or look for a secret that could help

Main the grenade launcher. Remember that the splash radius is huge on it. Anything that's out of grenade launcher range should be blasted with missiles.
The riot gun kicks ass, use the burst fire to chew up most enemies in close range. Also don't underestimate your sword, that thing does a lot of damage.
If you need extra HP, equip your fists and punch the shit out of wooden training dummies, they're semi common throughout Shadow Warrior's episodes.

I'd argue the Uzis are your general workhorse weapons, right below your rocket launcher and grenade launcher.
I didn't use sticky bombs too much, and you won't use shurikens too often if you're playing continuous. Fists are good for killing bees, fuck bees. Railgun is excellent for shithousing tough single targets like Guardians or big rippers, as well as bosses. The Guardian head kicks ass, the triple explosive fire is just a line of death, and the orbiting flames ruin things up close.
Remember to not be stingy with your nukes, the game's generous with them if you look around and it's really fun to just level entire rooms of monsters.

You could use Blender. The process isn't much different from Substance Designer, except things are a bit less convenient overall. You can make a mock environment and preview the textures in it as you're making them though.
Not really procedural, but GIMP can render out a variety of patterns and shapes that you can layer together to make materials. Pic related is a Quake texture done in GIMP.

Posting the /vr/ Mondo Project pasta again. We now have 2 submissions, which is 2 more than I was anticipating. I missed a post from like two months ago about a Golden Boners style write-up for the submissions. I wouldn't be against making this myself (obviously not literally calling it "The Golden Boners"). Really it's the least I could do for such a hands off project on my part. Would probably do something similar to Wadazine and make some nice graphics for it, but I'm getting ahead of myself. The /vr/ Mondo Project is a rip-off of the Doomworld Mega Project series. The purpose of the project to encourage creativity and bolster /vr/ as a mapping and modding community.

- Submit as times as you would like by the end of 2022.
- Any kind of playable custom content for any DOOM IWAD is considered a valid submission. Maps, gameplay mods, etc.
- Updates are allowed but will be considered new submissions.
- Include the phrase "/vr/ Mondo Project" with your submission so that I can find them all.

The submissions will be compiled into a zip with each submission given its own folder. Please include a txt with some information about how to play your submission and credits for any resources used.

I don't have the source file anymore, but by memory:
>filters/render/pattern/grid with varying settings for the brick outlines (grey bricks offset manually, blurred, and touched up with the warp tool to look more organic)
>perlin noise and cell noise (same place as above) blended together to make the grey brick texture
>perlin noise and CIE noise (filters/noise) for the tan bricks
>filters/distort/emboss applied to most layers with varied settings to give it depth (blend mode probably set to luminance or overlay)
Nothing too complicated really. The biggest issue is getting things to tile correctly, but there's a video linked above that covers that. The automatic method is usually perfectly fine for generated noise, though I had to do some manual work after warping the grey brick outlines.

Both of our runs were with the powersuit, actually. I might've streamed it separately later, but the first run to completion was co-op with Sledge when the powersuit had just been released. I think we ended up finishing it off-stream, because I can only find VODs up to the start of Jawbreaker. The end of Full Thrust is probably the most notable part anyway, I know late in the run I triggered the blursphere's constant death aura and it trivialized the maps from Somewhat Possible onward.

The software renderer handles vertical aim and sprite clipping differently from hardware acceleration. I think why Supplice/Selaco/Ion Fury protags seem interchangeable is because they try to go for the same influences as Doom and Duke, when Shadow Warrior and Powerslave were going for different themes
So Hedon and Citadel seem more noticeable in comparison and i guess Visceral too
Guess you just need to look for other media and sources for inspiration
Fighting games tend to have a lot of interesting character designs and specially over the top characters
Maybe the key is to pretend you're making a character for a different genre THEN try to make an FPS out of it
Because you don't want your indie game characters to be compared to something out of a Ubisoft game, where you just grab a generic 7th gen FPS white guy and turn it into a black women that's still part of the US military, in an open world game
And Doom mods like Demonsteele and Highway Acceleroid Booster have interesting characters because Term and others play different kinds of games, hence the creativity and novelty

Shelly's generic compared to the other build protags, and I think I know why. The others had personalities and voice lines related to the settings they were homages to. Shadow Warrior is a homage to martial arts movies and 80s/90s anime, so he's one big amalgamation of Asian stereotypes. The characters complement the settings they are in. Shelly's a cop in a cyberpunk setting, so naturally, she would crack one liners related to her occupation, right? Except she doesn't. She doesn't even say "I am the law," what is this bullshit?

It's awful because it is completely discarded after you get ANYTHING. It's fucking trash by realistic handgun standards too because of how slowly it fires, so that logic doesn't work here. Look at Duke 3D's pistol: It fires at a good rate, it's accurate if you put the crosshair on a target, and it uses ammunition separate from the Ripper. That right there is more than enough to make your starting weapon not dog shit.

Look at Blood's flare gun. In early game it can be rough to rely on due to the slower afterburn but even then you can use it to kill most enemies if you can fall back after sticking them. But once you get more weapons the flare gun becomes a pocket nuke with that insane altfire, because at that point you don't need to be stingy with flares.

Shadow Warrior's Shurikens fire in a spread of three projectiles, bounce off walls, and can often be recovered if they miss.

I believe it's more than possible to give the pistol a comfortable niche and keep it relevant even with a full arsenal. The last pistol I made shared ammo with the chaingun but it had infinite weak backup shots if you used up all your ammo, and a really strong short ranged altfire.

It's a completely unfun weapon desu. Consider that in Duke Nukem 3D, the Pistol is vastly overshadowed by other guns, yet it's still not half bad to fall back on because it's at least pretty fast (but not so fast as to be able to cut it as a Chaingun), it's a much more fun starting weapon, and it then transitions towards being a practical emergency fallback, as the Chaingun uses a different ammo pool.
In Doom, the Pistol shares ammo with the Chaingun, and because the Pistol is godawful while the Chaingun is useful, the pistol then becomes completely pointless unless you die and then Pistol Start, short of if you're really trying to save ammo and use it for popping shootable switches.

Then you've got Quake, where there's no Pistol, you just have a Shotgun to start with, and it's honestly not a very powerful Shotgun, but what it has going for it is that it's pretty fast, and it also has a pretty tight spread, so it's actually a pretty nice long range weapon you can use at times to take potshots at enemies from safe distances. The Super Shotgun may have a far stronger output of power, but it has extremely short range so it can't do all of the same things, in fact this even better separates the Shotguns as tools than Doom does.

I can tolerate Doom's pistol, because it works, but I think that if it could shoot twice as fast, but then required a short reload every 10 shots (along with maybe adding the unused frames for smoothness), it would be an objective improvement in game feel.
