personally the 2D-in-3D tricks Eschatos pulls looks very cool to me, but the poly count is low and a lot of people might find it rather low budget and gross looking

the space invaders sprites still hold up tho

it is, gameplay consists of a permanently scrolling screen with enemies constantly popping up barraging you with projectiles you either shoot at or dodge. just because it's not 2d and you dont play as a spaceship does not make it not a shmup. it's a rail shooter which is a subset of shmup

R-Type is a 2d plane scrolling in a 2d stage.
After Burner is a 2d plane scrolling in a 3d stage.

There are other variations. Space Invaders is a 1d line in a 2d stage.
Omega Boost is a 3d sphere autoscrolling in a 3d stage, i.e. the stage is on rails, but you move not just on a 2d plane like in panzer Dragoon et al, but in a 3d sphere.
