I can't think of a time where Sonic couldn't possibly have been more popular than Mario other than on the release of Sonic 1. You have to bear in mind that everyone and their mother knew what Nintendo was, to the point that every video game console was a "Nintendo" to some people, and Mario was synonymous with that.

Sonic has been, and I would say still is exceedingly popular as a character. You buy Mario games, because Mario is synonymous with good video games, but Sonic draws way more attention when you're dealing with things that sell on the strength of the character, like cartoons.

I loved nintendo and Mario but around 1993 I got a sega genesis and became obsessed with everything sonic. It was a brief moment in time when sonic was MEGA popular. Then Sega missed the boat with the Saturn not having a proper Sonic game to compete with Mario 64. I really was enchanted by Sonic R I saw at ToysRus but Mario 64 was just more exciting. Then I was really disappointed with how Sega ruined Sonic's simple design with the Dreamcast and later XBOX$ tryhard urban obnoxious edginess. Although that was just the beginning of sonics downfall into mediocrity.

SA1 was a good game but it added way too much extra shit and the gameplay controls suffered. Sonic used to be charming and cool but they turned his asshole snarky attitude character traits up to 11 to be more cinematic. I mean you could see the cringe shit starting to appear with sonic underground which came out in 1999 and all the comics lore and autism. Sonic went overboard on autism but it kept him popular as a meme despite the lack of quality games. Both Sonic and Mario are still popular because of nostalgia. Just because something is bad doesnt mean its less popular. Sonic is sort of popular now because his fanbase is such a train wreck. But Mario's fan base is also pretty bad and autistic. Judging by the cast Mario's new hollywood movie will be ever worse than Sonic.

When it came to gaming pre-PS1, yes, Japan and America *were* the entire world, and both were pretty hard in the Mario camp
Europe didn’t really become a sizable market segment until PS1, and South America still isn’t a sizable market segment because of the lack of IP protection so we don’t even really know how big the market there is

When I was a kid everybody played a couple of Mario games and a couple of kids played a Sonic game. But to be fair, we all knew who Sonic was. So its really interesting to hear Anons talk about a time when Sonic was even able to compete with Mario, or when Nintendo was ever engaged in any competition and not just playing on the sidelines

Mario is such a nothing mascot these days that it's weird to me to think of him as a character that can be popular. Saying Mario is popular today is like saying the Switch's logo is popular, which is literally correct but just feels strange to think about.

Wasn't he always like that?
Sonic's personality was embedded right into idle animation, long before the comics, cartoons, or Adventure were things. He was made to look cool, especially in a way Americans would think so at the time, and a way that kid's would find appealing to draw.
Mario is just a fat guy that they needed after they couldn't use Popeye.
It kinda reminds me how Donald Duck and all the other ducks are more entertaining than Mickey Mouse, while Mickey is just a clean mascot.
And as I finished this I realize they're misreading OP talking about the games and not the characters.

No. Sonic and Mario have been a lot like Pepsi and Coke in that respect. Pepsi has never once overtaken Coke in sales and neither has Sonic ever overtaken Mario in sales. At its high point Sonic approached Mario's popularity but never exceeded it.

I was in 7th grade when that game came out and for that age range (11~13), Sonic was definitely cooler than Mario. I wouldn't make any claims beyond that, though.
