Have this happened to you with certain games? For me finding out about the general opinion on Yoshi's Story and Donkey Kong 64 on the internet truly was something for someone who loved both games as a kid.

Have you replayed them recently? I had a similar experience with Bomberman 64: Had nothing but fond memories of the game and recently revisited it a few months back only to realize how much of a ball ache the single player can be at times with those asinine bomb jump puzzles.
Sure, you don't need the gold cards to beat the game. But you need them if you want to get to the proper final stages and boss battle. The multiplayer is still excellent at least.

I wouldn't mind revisiting Yoshi's Story though, the game still looks and sounds amazing to this day.

>> No.8748035

Yoshi's Story was a great game with a shit structure. They should have had you play every level in the campaign, instead of having to do multiple run throughs to see everything. As a retard kid I didn't understand the hearts opening more levels in the next world, and I imagine many other retard kids felt the same. So I'd be like "why are there 4 levels in this world but only 2 in next then 3 in one after".

DK64 is tedious busywork, but presented very well.

Yeah, with medievil 2. It wasn't as fun as the first game, but still very good.
Then I looked it up, and found out it was as hated as the Star Wars prequels that I prefer to the original trilogy.

I was in a similar boat with Yoshi's Story, even after playing Yoshi's Island, I still had a huge soft spot for it. DK64 I went from liking, to listening to what internet critics were saying, to actually replaying it and finding out that I still like it despite a lot of the flaws.

The GameCube in general I figured people really loved since all the kids in my neighborhood had one and not a PS2 for a certain period of time, but sales said otherwise.

>> No.8748082

Somewhat. I remember kids loving Sonic Adventure and Sonic Adventure 2 but apparently it's just our demographic; critics who were adults at the time and kids playing them for the first time today think they're bad.

I've finished Chrono Cross a couple of times as a teenager and enjoyed the game despite its flaws. I go on 4chan years later and EVERYONE brings up how bad the battle theme apparently was whenever a thread about the game appears which baffles me because I've never had issues with it.

As another anon said, Yoshi's Story is a good game with a weird structure.
Japan loved it, though.

>> No.8748718

I can't hate Yoshi's Story at all. It's too charming. Everything about it is so animated and alive. It is kind of all over the place though. Would have been better if the levels were all just played in a straight forward line, and you were required to reach the end of the level to actually beat the level.
If you like the more exploratory adventurous elements of games like Mario World or Yoshi's Island though, Play Yoshi's Story. It's a game made just for you.

>> No.8748732

Alternately, they could have gone all in on exploration, and made the game a kind of Metroidvania. It's one of those games like Sonic CD, where it kind of want to be both things, but it isn't enough of one thing or another.
Could someone just romhack Yoshi's Story? It can't be that hard, surely.

It's a quite ok game but it's definitively very weak if you compare it to Yoshi's Island
I'll have to play it again as it might actually beat Crafted World in what it wanted to do. Crafted World is absolutely boring and a damn shame as Wooly World was actually, finally, a decent Yoshi's Island sequel
>>8747913
Funny enough I played it recently and absolutely LOVED Bomberman 64. The bomb puzzles were kinda bullshit but I was in awe at the requirements for the Rainbow Palace. Probably less than 5% of players reached that, and probably even less finished that
>>8748090
You really gotta go into CC with the expectation that it's going to be wildly different from CT and that the plot connection to CT won't show up until around the end of the game and most of it will be lost in very obtuse storytelling

I remember a friend of mine wholeheartedly recommending Rise of the Robots. Apparently it's one of the worst games ever? I don't know.
I had Blues Brothers 2000 for N64, which is honestly just fine. People seem to want that game to be awful, firstly because it's Titus, and secondly because it's Blues Brothers 2000, but mostly it's just kind of fine. It even has some fun ideas, here and there.

There is no 'general opinion'. Sure, it can be an indicator of what is supposed to be good or not, but in the end you have to develop your own, authentic, taste. Liking or disliking stuff because others do so is just weak. You like Yoshi's Story, so you disagree. What's the issue? Be more confident, anon!

Production values feel a little lower, and it's sloppier than the first two overall. The reason most people hate it, myself included for awhile, is that it's much harder. It's the one that demands you start using R to dash, and that the default controls have always been shit. The others were just too babby for it to matter.

yeah this guy right here.

I had no internet back then, and was a fan of the matrix. Playing this game for the first time and using the slow-mo option was the coolest shit ever. Also the fact they hired the actors from the movie to do the voices, and the wachowski brothers directed the game or part of it I don't know, was also cool. I finished it at least 3 times and then replayed some missions and used the "hacking" option which was also nice.

fast forward a few years ago when I suddenly remembered the game and watch some reviews. Turns out it was a shit game because of the glitches, specially on the PS2. Load of BS dude, I've got some glitches not gonna lie, but the game was still fun, or maybe it looked fun because I was a kid and fan of the matrix? Whatever the reason this game is in my book for giving me lots of hours of fun.
