The gameboy came out in what '89? Final Fantasy wasn't a fucking "brand" at that point, they weren't even releasing the sequels in the west until well afterwards. And didn't they release some dumbed down version of FF for the gameboy anyway? But is that not developed by Square?

What even rules them out? FF games vary their mechanics. No reason a SaGa and SD1 would be disqualified if Square chose the FF name for them, and they did. Mainline games have done weirder than either.

The original Final Fantasy on NES sold 1.3 million across JP & NA (600K in Japan, 700K in NA), but remember, the NA release was like three years later in 1990. The original SaGa sold 1.1 million in Japan alone, and came out in 89.

Seiken Densetsu always had the Final Fantasy name on it in Japan and still had many of FF's elements like Black Mages, the FFI Fiends, and a Chocobo mount. It didn't break off from FF until the SNES sequel.
