First computer I remember us having was an Acer Aspire (don't remember the model number). Don't remember the amount of RAM, HDD space, or CPU (probably a Pentium). It had Windows 95 on it, with Acer's proprietary ACE desktop frontend. It was bundled with several games on CD-ROM, but I forget what games it came with vs the games we bought in some multipack collection that you find in like a CompUSA type store. I remember we had D/Generation (fun as shit), The Psychotron (always would get stuck at some safe or keypad lock or something. The game would never let you proceed), Commander Blood (which is probably my all-time favorite point & click. Still mad the sequel was French-exclusive and no one has ever translated it yet), Descent (might've been shareware version), Let's Explore the Airport (Humongous Entertainment point & click for kids), MegaRace, Tyrian, Jazz Jackrabbit (might've been shareware version), Doom (definitely shareware version), some licensed Are You Afraid of the Dark point & click (I remember being scared as shit of one of the guys that was cut in half), Epic Pinball, Crystal Caliburn (another pinball game, but for some reason, the game would never load. To this day, I have never played it), Pac-in-Time (some Pac-Man spinoff. Again, never worked so never played it), Dragon Lore (never worked. Assuming this is either a WRPG or a point & click), Ultimate Domain (never worked. Don't even have a clue what it is supposed to be.), and probably a ton of other shit I'm forgetting.
Then we had a Dell Dimension 8100 (I think), with like 256MB RAM (RDRAM, not even DDR), a 30GB HDD, and a Pentium 4. Windows ME (later installed XP on it in like 2007, but seems like it performed even worse). Don't remember it including any games besides the built-in Windows shit like the Space Cadet Pinball. I remember I got the PC version of Harry Potter & the Sorcerer's Stone, and one of my mom's co-workers gifted me a burnt disc of some chess game called Chess Mates.

Always massively overpriced but some macs were real purdy. Cube and mini were also cute but nearly as gimped at the iMac. Some of the G4 towers were nice, and actually useful. If you get the right model you can get pretty good compatibility with relatively fast speed. Unfortunately Mac gaming was always garbage, so really irrelevant to /vr/.

So yeah, this was the Acer Computer Explorer (ACE) UI. Except, it was fullscreen, not windowed because it wasn't running in a VM (but I guess it was similar to borderless fullscreen or something, because I could still access the taskbar and Start menu). I never even knew what the regular Windows desktop was supposed to look like until I got that second Dell computer I mentioned. Basically, all the games bundled with the ACE suite would appear in this Games folder, and you would insert the applicable CD-ROM in order to play it. For the games not included, like anything bundled with Windows or anything you installed separately, you would access from the Start menu.
Holy fuck, I am having a nostalgia rush! Thanks for making this thread, OP. Finally remembering forgotten shit from my childhood.

That only worked with Windows 95 OEM disc. But with 98 SE, 2000 and ME I had constant technical problems like:
>the setup command not working
>install program complaining about lack of space
>ME's boot disk bug with fdisk that prevented me from deleting the partition because of lower case volume label name
and other issues I faced that doesn't come to my mind at the moment.

Windows 95 OEM install disc being the solution was a miracle because I genuinely though it was going to be impossible to install any kind of Windows operating system to that laptop.

For such an old system you could get away with a cheaper power supply. It depends on how badly the thing was overclocked by intel though. I stick with laptops from that era as they take up less space. I also recently fixed an old laptop and had to take the whole thing apart to clean off the completely solid thermal paste. Literally took hours rubbing with a Qtip because of the direct die cooling and I didn't want to risk damaging it

Depends what you're using it for. If you use a computer just for a word processor, email, ftp, or whatever, then it isn't obsolete.

It's more I want to finish my current project. I've heard that the capacitor plague effects P4 boards pretty badly, so I really should checkI it before it possibly gets worse though. Intel did some black magic when they stuffed a desktop CPU into a laptop though, not to mention the laptop hits heat levels that are pretty unhealthy. Laptop is solid as a rock at least.

This was my first PC, mostly played Hover3d and 3d movie maker on it. Had 256 MB of ram and a Pentium II processor, IIRC.
Later we'd get a Dell Dimension 2400, which eventually I'd put a graphics card in to play Half-Life 2

Compaq Presario 4505
I think it came with a copy of Virtual On otherwise I have no idea where that game came from, my parents didn't buy me games unless it was either my birthday or if I did well in school so it must have been some kind of promotion.

They are more plentiful in Japan, but they occasionally appear on ebay. There's one there right now but he guy is asking $400, which is pretty crazy for a 17 year old machine.

For the iMac and eMac's intended use case? Absolutely not. Intentionally easy for children and boomers to use at a "reasonable" price. eMac even had a Trinitron, so it's not too bad to look at.

Favorites by look are definitely the FM Towns with its front facing CD-ROM drive, the dual-tower Sharp X68000, and pretty much any NEC computer of the day. Of the ones I've used, I have grown very fond of my 286-12>386DX-40>486DX4-100, Pentium MMX 233, P3-1400, Athlon XP 3200+, Athlon X2 4600+, and i7-2600k.

>Just would've been a bitch to migrate your data to the new machine in the pre-ubiquitous internet, pre-USB storage days.
Not wrong. I did this several times back in the day, sometimes with a giant stack of floppies, sometimes with a null-modem cable I crimped myself, using a program called FastLynx. Then I tried to do it from a Windows 98 computer to a newer machine and FastLynx, being a DOS program, lost all the long file names.

Compaq had a similar sort of deal for leased machines in the early-mid 90's. People got regular upgrades and it all worked out pretty well until performance when up and price went down and people could get an off brand machine that was better than what they were leasing for 3-4 months of lease payments.

>>8737038
lmao. You just pulled the drive out of the old machine and put it in the new one. If you were a fucktard who didn't have a separate drive for programs and data you'd have to copy shit but still easy as fuck. If you wanted to copy over a LAN you didn't need "ubiquitous internet". The "L" stands for local.
