I've been here since /vr/ started, it remains my favorite board on the site.

How long have I been noodling away at this Immoral Conduct project for? 6 years maybe? And there isn't even really anything to show for it, the past 2 years has had me sidelined by mapping and taking part in /doom/ projects, and I don't regret it one bit, it's been so very fun. I never thought I had any mapping in me, that all that old trash was just trash that would never amount to or lead to anything, but man did I prove myself wrong.

Maybe some day I'll make my own little partial/total conversion or something, all on my own. I feel confident that I can make some decent maps and then put some flashy shit in them, because it's fun to make flashy shit. First I'll have to actually wrap up the Immoral Conduct thing though, and still I haven't thought of a name for it.

Haven't been playing much doom lately cause I've been working on my backlog but I'm happy with what I've completed so far.

Plutonia 2 was good but it has confirmed that I prefer level packs more than megawads because I always end up getting bored about 15-20 maps in, though I think some of the levels around that point were mid anyway.

to me quake 1 is the sweet spot between stupidly complicated, more modern engines (i guess source isn't really "modern" anymore but whatever) and 2.5d shit like doom - you can do so much more with a full 3d environment and you don't have to worry about hacky room-over-room bullshit, but it's abstract enough that you can get away with a lot of shit that simply wouldn't fly in a different game/engine. this applies to pretty much every older fps though, like hl1 and every goldsrc mod ever. also laying down brushes just always made more sense than drawing sectors to me, it feels like chipping away at a giant byzantine sculpture with lots of monster closets and boiling lava in it
then again, doom is much easier to mod and limiting yourself with dumb arbitrary engine restrictions is fun, so i'm not really surprised that there are ten times the number of doom wads out there compared to quake stuff

Anyone’s preexisting hatred for Doom’s hitscanners gets amplified with the ones in build. You’ll also get some players gaining the misconception that Blood and SW on their higher difficulties will be as easy/difficult as Doom 1 and 2 on UV.

Tried Memento Mori 2 for the first time today, didn't expect it to be that good. After playing several old megawads such as Eternal Doom, Perdition's Gate & Hell to Pay, I've got the impression that 90s stuff isn't worth it other than historical interest, but MM2 proved me wrong.
10 maps in, so far the only one that reeked this typical 90s schizo mapping style was MAP06. Otherwise it's really great, I found myself thinking this would've been incredible as a part of Final Doom.

These were all done in the 90s, and they all have something going for them. They're not all perfect, but if you go through them, you'll probably find some stuff you'll really like. You'll probably also be very impressed by some of them considering the state of available tools in the 90s. Batman Doom in particular is extremely impressive for being all DeHacked shit.
I will however concede that Doom mapping ended up getting all the more interesting in the 2000s, better and more flexible tools and ports allow for incredible things.

There's parts I like about Perdition's Gate, but also a lot that I don't, half of the levels feel like thoughtless filler. To me, anyway, many levels did not feel engaging to explore or look at, much combat was dry and underwhelming, and there's a strong lack of variety.

Is it feasibly possible to make decorative flames via archvile infighting against a thin wall?
I was spitballing something like

Dopa is a fun challenge episode to send off Quake. I only played a little bit of Dimension of the Machine, but it was equally as challenging and much prettier; felt like a nice way to bring Quake back, but I'm just not interested in finishing it and I can't quite figure out why. Thanks anon, I'm glad somebody noticed the Violent Rumble reference. It's still not as good as it could have been since it was made in one day. There was a lot I wanted to fit in, including the minutes of /vr/, HUH, a scathing mockery of chop for not finishing 94 protons, among other gameplay mods, but didn't have the time for. For the 10th anniversary, I'll make something truly all encompassing.
As for /vr/city, there's been a few of ideas surrounding that. Charcola brought up the idea of a /vr/ HQ akin to multiplayer clan maps on an SNS once. Me and mozza liked the idea so we started spitballing ideas. We thought about having it being set in a city where you could see the other generals of /vr/ as separate buildings. Mozza even had plans to add a news board that would display new posts from the thread in real time, but he's long gone now. I still want to do /vr/ HQ, but not with him out of the picture.
There was also an idea of a city map where each anon would get a plot of land to build on, similar to patchwork, but I don't see that get talked about very often.

I tried Nashgore with Ashes and this is kinda excessive. I'm gibbing dudes with my crowbar and revolver, and roaches explode in a disproportionate amount of gore. Doom's lack of vertical checks in a few places is really one of those double-edged swords.

Shame there's less wads for it, most that are out there are GZDoom only, and the ones that don't have boring themes or shit encounters most of the time.
But honestly, almost everything that Doom does, Heretic improves upon:

I agree, with Tomed Hellstaff especially you can get a lot of mileage in vertical maps.
I already posted about it once but Azure Fortress has these platforms with sabreclaws that are triggered to raise once you reach the end of the hallway, but you can use a Tome and rain hellfire on each platform, killing them before the platforms raise.
This is like using the rocket launcher infinite blast in Doom but the major difference is that in Doom it looks like an exploit and in Heretic it looks like a neat piece of immersive gameplay.

I did an unfucking work on Led's Generic Weapon Mod
can anybody help me test it?
what I did was change all bullet weapons to use the same ammo
and made it that you spawn with both assault rifle and pistol
also did some minor adjustments do pistol assault rifle and mingun dmg per bullet and spread to balance
increased the rocket launcher magazine to 6 from 5
I zipped together another 2 minimods one is the additional crosshairs that come with brutal doom v21 and all brutal doom metamods

That's what I've been up to so far, you doofus. Though I've had a change of plans with the chainsaw slot weapon: Instead of a melee weapon I'm gonna give the player a deployable gun pod that'll sit there and shoot shit. I'm also going to give it a personality and make it cute.
The default set is gonna lose the dragon sword and have a deployable mini Past Linked Arti that'll run around and hit shit with his sword.

Cus you don't really need a melee weapon if all the guns have infinite ammo backup shots, you know?

Yeah. You get better weapons, so the enemies need to be tougher too. Different colored acolytes get different weapons, some of the spiderbots can fire a gun (vanilla Strife had the sprites for it, but were not used), etc.

I think Plutonia's Map 15 has the best use of the Spidermind of all official levels. He's up on this tall ledge you gotta get up to, but his big gun and huge hitbox does fantastic area denial here, if you rush with the BFG, he'll get you, and it's non-trivial to get a bead on him because he's flanked by two resurrecting Chaingunners (even worse, four on UV), and they can only be defeated properly by scaling that ledge and starting the crushers on the hidden Viles. Sure, he'll take fire from behind, which can give a window, but he cuts down most of those guys pretty quickly.

I actually can't think of a better vanilla use of this monster than this, and that's saying something because he's normally mediocre at best.

Thank you, thank you. What I'm mostly concerned with is the items. Saints had a very small item mechanic, complete with a 4 slot inventory, and you had to throw rocks to enable switches and shit like that. You also had to collect scrolls that contained Bible verses, for these doors that held mandatory switches/items. If this is going to be a completely faithful rebuild, I have to find a way to get that shit working, and I'm completely new to modding. I gave up doing Source shit purely for that reason.
