What's the appeal of Ecco the Dolphin?
Which game is the best?

>> No.872505

The atmosphere.

>> No.872510

The appeal is that you're an underwater version of Duke Nukem or some shit.

Tides of Time is the best Ecco.

>> No.872776

>atmosphere & music
>no hand holding => exploring on your own
>story is fed in small bits and you have to speak with the various entities yourself
>game gets fucking weird towards the end
>food chain type of concept. You eat fish, aliens in turn, farm earth.
>that feel when going deeper under the caves, finding new things. Coming back in hurry for air.

My favorite so far is 1, but I havent fully played Ecco 2 yet and I hear it's even better.

But on my quick first impression, it get even weirder with "futuristic" places (sky-water passages, floating islands, techonology level) and evolved dolphins that fly. I can't even imagine what the middle/end part of the game is like.

>> No.872823

If Ecco/Ecco 2 is too hard/scary for you, play Ecco Jr.
It's a "kids game" but nice and relaxing.

>> No.872834

Honestly, the most fun for me was when I got the hunter's song and I could finally shoot enemies down, I liked navigating mazes way more than the moving block puzzles. Fuck having to push two glyphs together.

I think Kolibri 32X is what Ecco should've been, a straightforward shooter with mazes.

>> No.872860

Enviromental message game without furries, novelty gameplay.

>> No.874064

Anyone else love Ecco Jr. the most?

The atmosphere is the biggest one. Some of the mechanics and level designs are brilliant, and the story is fantastic.

That said, tides of time is objectively the best ecco game. It improved on every single aspect in the original. Not to mention the level design and difficulty curve is flawless, and the new mechanics are great as well. Let's not forget the sweet soundtrack and amazing story while you're on it.

It's not for everyone, but holy god is it a wonderful game series.

agreed. It's got those beautiful 128 bit graphics. And it's got really tough 3d level design kinda like descent or something. brotip: don't use the internet if you get stuck somewhere in the machine levels. figure it out yourself.

I played the first Ecco on Genesis and the Dreamcast version.

I loved the Genesis one. Not too hard, not too easy for my pre-teen mind.

I really tried to love the Dreamcast version, but the camera hurts my goddamn head. It had some incredible level designs (HANGING WATERS!) but it was hair pullingly difficult at times. Also, the story narration was retarded.

That's not porn though, that's a shitty, kind of creepy drawing. If you can masturbate to that without extreme effort then you can masturbate to everything.

I was given Ecco II as a Christmas present in 1994. I was disappointed at first but played it anyway. 3 hours later: HOLY SHIT, THIS IS THE BEST GAME EVER!!! Well, maybe not ever, but goddamn that game was good. Hard, too.

What would be the best way to emulate the original 2 games? I need to revisit them. Ugh I wish I still had my fucking Game Gear.

Kega Fusion works good for me. Genesis, CD, 32X, and Game Gear Stuff.
I love the Genesis Ecco games, but could never get anywhere in the Game Gear ones. Hated not being able to pause.

>What's the appeal of Ecco the Dolphin?

Atmospheric. They turn into horror games at points. Sort of unexpected and unique. You expect some game about a Dolphin to be some goofy shit and smiles and sunshine. Not Resident Evil in the water.

>> No.877130

Original Genesis version or Sega CD versions?

I hear people don't like Sega CD music. If that's the case, that kind of music is easy as hell to replace, as you can just output the Genesis music as .wav and replace the Sega CD score. These kinds of CD Aduio games had easy to change music, which was neat.

Does the Sega CD version even have anything extra beyond CD Audio? Might as well stick to the cart then - only reason to use the Sega CD version would be easier pirating.

>> No.877183

The appeal is that it's a trippy as fuck game.

You're a dolphin with the ability to time travel, you meet evolved dolphins and aliens, you swim in colorful underwater places, and you swim in water streams in the sky.

>> No.878241

The story and atmosphere make for the perfect "late night chilling and smoking some ganja while unwinding" video game.
For more atmosphere and easier gameplay, see Ecco Jr.

>> No.878257

Can't speak for Defender of the Future or Jr., never played them. As far as the Genesis games are concerned, though...

>What's the appeal of Ecco the Dolphin?

Amazing story, soundtrack and general atmosphere, and pretty challenging gameplay.

>Which game is the best?

They're pretty much two parts of the same game; Tides of Time improves on a few things, but the story doesn't make a lot of sense if you haven't played the original first.

>> No.879612

I just finished Ecco 1 on Genesis. I'm going to play SCD version. The music isn't as catchy. They didn't simply raise the quality of the music either. They kind of like replaced it with "ambience" type of music, that kind of shit you would listen on aquatic/oceanology museums stuff.
It's not that bad, but the sound effects sound better but I prefer the originals.
There're some 3d movies as well. But as expected from that time, they're ugly as fuck.
