My games typically don't have it. I have a few with pinholes but those are ones I bought cheap without realizing they had them. That said, I've kept an eye on them and no new pinholes have appeared on them, lending more to them being top damage from mishandling. But even the worst ones I've checked against the redump rips and the checksums match due to all the redundant error correction in the formats.

Honestly the disc rot panic is over-exaggerated. Most of what people think is disc rot is actually top level damage from mishandling. Actual disc rot is rare and comes from a manufacturing defect. If your games haven't started to show it it in after 20+ years, they're not going to magically start rotting. Take good care of your games and they should outlast you.

I once left a disc on the windowsill in the middle of summer and spent 3 months overseas. When i got home i found it, completely ruined and looking like that. It was only portal 2 for the 360.
That said I was a teenager in the 90s. I didn't really look after my shit. I still have most of my discs from those days and NONE of them have "rotted." I'm not 100% sure that is even possible unless you're somewhere super humid or you leave your shit on the windowsill. CD's ain't gonna last forever, that's a fact, but keep the stuff you want to look after in it's case and you'll be fine for a while.

Agreed. I've got quite a collection from just holding onto my stuff. No intention to sell.
When the retro market started getting stupid i was worried about my discs after reading about disc rot and knowing I'd struggle to replace them if existing copies are dying and getting more expensive.
I checked every single disc, some scratched to absolute shit, some barely/never played and ZERO rotted. It's a meme for sure, or maybe some crap started by wata games to keep pushing the market higher. I wouldn't put it past them, bunch of dicks.

As the times grow more dire and uneasy, people's bullshit continues to pile.
I just started getting into disc resurfacing with NOVUS, honestly cant believe how well it works if done right, and how easy it is to do it right. At WORST you may need to resurface discs that are kinda beat up, if you take care of your shit you have literally nothing to worry about.
..and even then, i mean, who's collecting expecting anything that isnt the fucking box and instruction manual to live longer than another 20 years max? everything has a lifespan. Thats actually a huge reason i advocate for the prices getting fairer and the thousand dollar games AT LEAST getting back down to the low hundreds, its absurd to treat gaming like a fucking furniture investment or something.

>> No.8724808

It gets more stupid by the day.
I get the appeal of playing games on original hardware, i really do. If i play a ps1 game on a ps1 it's way more engrossing than emulating it, but there's loads of games i don't own a physical copy of but i probably have it on a 1TB SSD next to my PC because i sure as shit ain't paying $300 for an obscure title which isn't going to last forever anyway.
The retro market can honestly fuck off at this point, why bother. It's not an investment, it's a fucking game probably aimed at kids that came out on now obsolete hardware 30 years ago.

I think i paid just under $150. No regrets, but still most games really should not hit that price range unless there's many factors, hell i'd say the JAP copy should be costing that given how much value you get with it complete with an artbook, ost cd, and just the novelty of the box.

I have hundreds of discs, but only a few have ever rotted. It always seems to happen to the early CDs from the 80s, the ones from before colored printing on one side of the disc was common, where the disc is reflective on both sides.
