Because when you're trying to market this thing towards kids, teens, and young adults in late 80s America where everything was starting to be marketed as hip and XTREME, with the bit wars coming into full fruition, the name seemed like a no-brainer. Too bad the thing was the "Five Hundred and Ninety-nine U.S. Dollars" of 1989 and didn't sell as much as the competition because it has some fantastic games.

What they should have done was wait for the PCE Duo to come out before moving to the West. That way you release it as the Turbo Engine with Dual Media Technology (TM), a game console that plays both card and CD games, and aggressively market it as a competitor to the Genesis and its Sega CD add-on by mocking the need for a conjoined twin fetus or whatever. Plus this way the PCE would have already hit its library peak and thus there wouldn't be the other issue of having nogames when it came out in America.

The problem with this, is that the Genesis came out around the same time, which also used the marketing of "the arcade experience at home", and the Genesis/ MD was much more suited as an arcade home-port machine, with its' Motorola 68000 CPU. Basically the same type of CPU found in many of the 16bit arcade boards.

honestly the real problem is they wasted a bunch of time and resources redesigning the PC-Engine in a vain attempt to make it more appealing to the US market when the original design probably would have sold just fine, particularly if they had managed to do an American release in 1988 before the Genesis would be a thing in the US instead of releasing in 1989 two whole months after the Genesis, in such a world they might have been able to secure a proper niche against Nintendo instead of being a mostly forgotten "also-ran" here in the West

Sure they could have considering how bad they spanked Sega in Japan. Sega had godly marketing in the west which is how they sold so well.

Why would I play a TG-16 version of Mortal Kombat when I could play a TG-16 version of Street Fighter 2 instead?
