For 94 Protons, If I try to get the props done and then assemble the texture pack so that it can be done for about late March, that'd be fine if the guns and the final boss isn't done yet by then, right?

Also I call dibs on E1L1, and E3Lwhatever for the final boss.

>> No.8716738

Yes, that's fine, the props and textures are pretty much everything needed for mapping. The guns are cosmetic and having them added them later won't impede on the mapping effort.

>Super Shotgun was a mistake.
I still hold fast in my belief that the Super Shotgun was both a great and terrible addition to Doom's arsenal.
Amazing how firing two shotgun shells plus a few extra pellets can fuck with the balance so hard.

Doom 2 gives you the Super Shotgun very early, which would be less of a problem if they had just stuck to an episodic formula like the first game, resetting the players inventory every now and then.

>>8717040
Don't agree, they have precision which the Super Shotgun lacks, letting you deal with guys at a much longer distance, where the Super Shotgun may miss most or all pellets. Chaingun is also a different ammo pool, so that can straight up be something you can use when you don't have shotgun shells.

Doom 64 did the right thing by making the Chaingun two tics faster though, it's a lot more satisfying to use.

I agree with your sentiments on Doom 64's chaingun, the beefier firing sound and cool muzzleflash helps too.
Resetting the player's inventory would certainly helped too, and as much as I think the Super Shotgun is sometimes overpowered, it sure is nice using it to clear out groups of trash monsters or killing cacos with it.

Difficulty is not entirely based on monster count, but on ammo / items. Do you have any idea how many people bitched at me like little girls when I put one, ONE completely invisible pinkie in a room that's shaped like a dick? Now imagine that same scenario with a map that has slightly less ammo than the average Doom 2 map.

>> No.8717105

Wonder if it would be fun to have a pistol replacement where instead of it being just a shitty peashooter, turn it into an ammo hungry magnum that has a 10 to 1 bullet ammo consumption or something.

If beating the map is possible without using savestates, even if you're good, and even if you know the map like the back of your hand, it isn't difficult enough.

I wonder if it'd be feasible to make such a hard map with a relatively small enemy count, while still having it be beatable at all. If you aren't utilizing custom enemies, there'd have to be some gimmick to it beyond standard RNG jackpots and ammo starvation.

What are the general rules, if unspoken, about midi sourcing?
Commercial DOOM and explicitly permitted fan stuff is all kosher, obviously
Non-DOOM /vr/ shooters are fine
Other big vidya and even big name music get a pass since the copyright jews don't care about doomworld archives
Classic megawads, like pre 2005-10, seem to be fair game?
As for more recent stuff I dunno, I doubt it's a free for all unless the author says so, the spirit of midi sourcing in DOOM seems to be "whatever I can grab" but at the same time I can't imagine yoinking a track composed the same year would sit well

Why does movement in the Doom engine feel much better than in the build engine?
In doom it feels like there are some microseconds on acceleration a deacceleration when you start moving and you stop, giving the movement a sense of weight.

There are uses for Plasma though.
There's a cross shaped trap in Mass Extinction where you get lowered and 4 barons swarm you from all directions.
There's barely any room and walls everywhere so you can't use Rocket Launcher, SSG is too low DPS and too slow and using the BFG is wasteful since you can barely nail two barons with it at the same time.
There's also a big pillar in the center, the best strategy for this room seems to be to wound one baron, run past him and stick your back to the wall, the barons funnel in one by one and you just plasma them.

I can't think of any other reason, Knight is Baron wit the pink upper body turned tan. I think some of the photorealistic sheen was lost in that recolor (he's a claymation model), but beyond that just pay attention to their screams.
Their close similarity is why I like to change their scaling when doing mod stuff (0.90 for Knight, 1.10 for Baron), and also give them distinct active and hurt sounds.

Its levels are actually good just easy. Dr Sleep and Tom Mustaine were good mappers, the finished product was just fucked by rushed deadlines. Imagine if they delayed Master Levels and got the maps better and a 32 level mapset packaged with Final Doom

>> No.8719698

All right, I just played through the entirety of 2048 units continuously, saving only at the start of each level, just to see how long a D2All would take. Ended up with a time of 178 minutes, and I really was prioritizing survival over speed. Some of the difficult maps become significantly easier with the weapons carried over, including map29. In regards to the potential run, the maps of note are:
Map07: This one kills me sometimes in the double AV fight, and pray to god that you do not miss any enemies when going down the elevator.
Map11: reeeeeeeeeeeee it's dark, there's lots of platforming and secrets, routing is confusing, and the SR50 jump is annoying. The final fight is not a problem, since you carry over the BFG from map10.
Map15: This one is generally difficult, and some of the secrets are quite annoying to get. You can lose a lot of time if you miss them on the first try.
Map31: The chessboard fight is kind of scary even with the invul.
Map23: You have the BFG, so this level becomes much easier, you do not even have to cheese the arch-viles. SSGing the cyberdemon is tedious though.
Map27: The blue key fight can go wrong, but other than that this map is pretty easy on a continuous playthrough.
Map29: You get a megasphere at the end of map28 and a lot of weapons, taking out most of the challenge from this map. The most difficult part is when you get locked in (blue key, I think).
Map30: REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE why does the worst map to max have to be the final one? Everything before the IoS is easy, but killing the turret barons is absolutely disgusting. And you can get telefragged too, if you're not careful.

Old Doom Builder still works, it's still a pretty good program, it was great even when it was brand new way many years ago. Doom Builder became THE map editing software because not only was it better than all previous Doom mapping software ever published, it was also totally free.
It was actually a rather impressive leap, because it was a million times faster and easier to use than 90s stuff like DeepSea and what not (none of the old programs had a 3D first person view even). I remember trying it out in the 2000's as a complete neophyte, and I was absolutely blown away at how easy it was to use and learn, and that's before factoring in the really easy to follow tutorial included with the software.
I had never made a level for a first person shooter of any kind before, and I could simply not believe how simple it was.

The later iterations of it, Doom Builder 2, GzDoom Builder, and now Ultimate Doom Builder, they're actually not fundamentally different from the original, the handling and functionality is the same, the latest UDB just has more features, more options, and is a more stable program (not by that much though, because DB was actually quite stable as is back in the 2000s).

You could stick to and use the older Doom Builders, and probably it would be ok (people were ok with it for years), but if you're used to the first one, know that there's basically no transitional difficulty to use Ultimate Doom Builder instead, and it has many good benefits. One of them is that you can turn off the smudgy Graf filter in the 3D mode, another is that it recognizes the cool new MBF21 format.

Popular mods always get a lot of forks, and said forks often tend to have varying degrees of bloat/polish/direction/etc. If the core mod is something you enjoy, then finding a fork is mostly a matter of which one you feel caries out its intention the best. I tend to stay away from the brutal derivatives, but it applies to other mods as well. Most important part is playing what you enjoy, and having an open mind to find other mods you might enjoy even more.

No Windows. GZDoom is working beautifully on Linux and working out of the box. You boot into the desktop mode, go into Discover app and and install GZDoom from the Flatpak library. From there you just put IWADS into GZDoom config directory, add GZDoom as a non-steam app to Steam, go back into gaming mode and it's ready to play.

ZDL also does work out of the box. You just download it and run it. You do need however a small shell script working as an executable for GZDoom flatpak but it's trivial. Then you add ZDL as a Non-steam app.

It just works.
ZDL needs some setup but it's isn't rocket science. In desktop mode, you install GZDoom flatpak, download and unpack ZDL and add it as a non-steam game. Configuring source port is a little bit complicated because it's a flatpak, but it only requires creating a file with just a one shell command with parameter passthrough. This file will run GZDoom flatpak. The rest is history

How would you explain nightmare difficulty setting?

personally I think its the true doom experience unlike ultra violence or any of the easier difficulties. Personally I like to think if there were cultists who opened a gateway into the warp to unleash daemons you'd think that there'd be a huge number of them thus explaining why they'd just teleport in

honestly nightmare just makes the most sense to me. And its obviously more fun to fight hordes of cultists and daemons>>8720481 as this guy notices enemies spawns in he noticeably becomes more paranoid

I still disagree. It makes combat ultimately pointless as you're burning resources on something that's going to get back up. So it's less about killing shit for the fun of it and more about picking and choosing what to kill and avoiding fights wherever possible. The same logic applies to watching people go through maps in nightmare mode: If they know what they're doing, they're gonna avoid combat and focus on getting the fuck out of the map as quickly and efficiently as possible.
Also it's not really "a big fight" Cyberdemons stand their ground and spam missiles at you, so in a way they're LESS of a threat because you know they're going to be, as opposed to them firing a volley of three missiles and then moving a bit.

If I want a challenge, I go for HD.

They play the same, but if anything slightly easier because you can see around corners. It’s just often not as fun because a player sprite from earlier shooters isn’t as fun as the variety of weapon sprites (Shadow Warrior has some fun jumping and melee sprites). Quake 2 has decent third person animations with different weapon models, and I think when I messed with Quakespasm I achieved similar results for 1. >if the game utilizes the third person perspective for gameplay purposes, it becomes a boring cover shooter with possibly shitty movement and turning
I dont see how that logically follows. Its just a coincidence that when third-person shooters started to become huge, thats the type of formula many followed. A third-person shooter can still play just like a classic FPS but with a different perspective. Heretic 2 is like that.

logically if the manual replaces something that was amended in march 2022, then it was very likely issued some time after march 2022

I don't have the manual. Does it reference the demons in it? If so, it is totally possible that yes, it was issued after the events and changed on the day of the event to give demon fighting tips. The story of Doom 1 and 2 has several humans left alive and human manufacturing is still up and running for quite a bit of time. There would have been more than enough people around to rewrite and redistribute a flyer making use of Doomguy's knowledge.

It plays the same. If it’s due to something like an awkward and floaty camera, that’s only an old Q2 mod and you can get one that stays still using KMQ2.
I also want to apologize to all the Serious anons for forgetting about the third person option available in all of the Sam games.

1. Would anyone be down for some Serious Sam later today? I can host dedicated servers for TFE and TSE.
2. Would anyone be down for our own little Serious Saturday starting this week? It would also be later in the day (US central time that is).

Hey Kegan, are you familiar with the mk-champions mod? It's fun but your mods have an odd issue with it, causing a few of the player's attacks to cause self-harm.

The ones I've noticed so far are:
Combined Arms: Artificer's pistol alt-fire shoots himself in the face, Past Linked is hurt by detonating Somaria cubes and the small embers from fire enchanted sub-weapons.
GMOTA: Doomguy is hurt by his sapphire bombs.
