What's "your system"?

The platform you keep coming back to, that you enjoy most, that you like even beyond the games? For me, it's the PSX.

While it's easy to just call it nostalgia, and there is some truth to that, to me it just captures a particular time. It felt "new" in a way that other consoles either side never did, and even to this day when I play a game for the first time I feel that "newness."

The funny thing is that at the time I didn't rate it that highly, casting it aside almost as soon as the PS2 came out. But with the passage of time I've come to prefer it above nearly all other platforms. I've come to realize that all of the decades-old backlog titles are nearly all PSX games.

Famicom, it's just comfy. Endless games, can play most of them for a few minutes, or a few hours, they're super cheap, and practically never break.

Sega Saturn, PS1, and Super Nintendo have amazing game libraries. I only speak English and the amount of Japanese games translated into English by fans is super cool as well.

>> No.8716284

My favorites have fluctuated from the SNES to the Saturn to the PC Engine, but at the end of the day it always comes back to the NES. It's just everything I want out of video games, even if it's basically the most basic and played out retro console out there. Gotta include Famicom with it tho, NES or Famicom should be counted as one library.

>PSX
For exactly the reasons you said. It has a feeling of excitement and wonder, barely contained. New attempts to transition to 3D. New gameplay mechanics. New dimensions. New worlds. Often janky, sometimes successful, always nostalgic. I only had mine for a few yeara, between the times of my dated Genesis and my early-purchase PS2, but now looking back it captures the late 90s nostalgia the best.
>Neo Geo
For exact opposite reasons as the PSX. This feels like the pinnacle of last-gen gaming. Frantic, hard-as-nails, pick-up-and-play arcade action with gorgeous, intricate 2D sprites. This feels like the games I played as a 7 year old, only how my decades-old memories have repainted them through rose-tinted glasses.
>Saturn
Similar reasons for the PSX, though it feels like a half-realised attempt at pushing refined old generation games into the new generation. I never had one, only one friend did, so it feels “mysterious” even after years of emulation. I don’t feel quite as much love for it as the PSX, just a lot of intrigue.

>> No.8716345

Genesis. I think that Sonic 1-3 are bad games but they're very fun. Hyperstone Heist is very good, and Comix Zone is a classic. I occasionally pick a random game to play and if it's not a JRPG or SHMUP, I usually enjoy it

>> No.8716354

>>8716345
To elaborate, I think the Genesis has great sound. The synth braps are infinitely better than the SNES sound. The colors are always super vibrant, the graphics are consistently better than competitors.
The controller is the worst part of the console but I mostly emulate so it's not even a problem

>> No.8716384

Virtual Boy. The feel and yes smells of using a real vb in a comfy playing position will never be beat, closed off in a black and red dimension cut off from the outside world. I truly wish we could have at least gotten one more full year on the market for the games in development.

Vectrex and Neogeo Pocket also.

I'm with you OP. The games I played on PS1 felt like a whole new world compared to Genesis/SNES and as I grew up with it I could appreciate more and more of its library. PS2 was awesome but everything about PS1 screams SOVL

SNES for the comfy but no bullshit platformers, the atmosphere, Kirby Superstar and DKC trilogy being some of my favorite co-ops, Natsume, Quintet and Konami's incredible offerings and all the JRPGs for a relaxing time

Sega Genesis for the arcade-like rush of beating a hard game with limited continues, the intense action, and and all the quality shit Sega put through its lifespan, the awesome Shinobi series, SoR, Batman TAS and Contra Hard Corps being particular favorites

Game Boy mostly because of nostalgia, I find the monochrome graphics and sound of the games soothing, but stuff like Wario and DK94 being genuinely amazing games and there's still tons of ambitious little games I'm discovering; recently loved Final Fantasy Adventure, Gargoyle's Quest and Trip World

>> No.8717336

PS1:

>Incredible library of games that I always find myself coming back to and plenty that I still need to check out. Japan, Europe and North America were all excelling together and each brought their own unique flavour to the market.
>The influx of survival horror games with RE1-3, Silent Hill, Dino Crisis etc.
>Cool 90s underground aesthetic.
>Good controller that's easy to go back to, unlike the 64.
>The spirit of 2D SNES JRPG's lived on with higher fidelity graphics and CD based sound.
>APE ESCAPE
>Memory card icons
>Good backwards compatibility on future machines and fan made emulators are of a high standard

File: 2.85 MB, 4032x1908, GameCube.jpg [View same] [iqdb] [saucenao] [google]

GameCube:

>Lots of weird and bold new directions for classic Nintendo characters like Luigi's Mansion, Wind Waker, Mario Sunshine, Metroid Prime, Double Dash
>Capcom was unstoppable with Resident Evil 4, REmake, Viewtiful Joe, Killer 7
>Experimental and odd Japanese games like Chibi Robo, Doshin the Giant, Odama, Animal Crossing, Pikmin
>F-ZERO GX
>Smash Melee, if that's your thing.
>Still the best versions of Monkey Ball 1&2
>Strong PAL60 support for PALfags and strong progressive scan support for NTSCfags.
>Gameboy player and the weird, albeit slightly half baked, GBA connectivity with Tingle Tuner and shit like that.
>Wavebird controller
>Great emulation through Dolphin and perfect backwards compatibility through a Wii with Nintendont

The PS2's library is unquestionably better, but the GameCube has a very warm place in my heart.

>> No.8717364

Have to agree with a lot of others with the PS1. I got mine around 4th grade in 99 from my dad for my birthday. I never really had a substantial collection of games, but the ones I did have (like Spyro, CTR, Muppet Monster Adventure, and Ape Escape) made me really, really happy.

I'm also incredibly partial to Gameboy. Loved the idea of playing games anywhere I wanted. Played the absolute shit out of Game and Watch Gallery 2

I guess I won't be original and say NES/Famicom, it's the system I'm playing since early childhood and to this day. Whatever happens, if i'm too bored I can load an emulator or hook up the console to TV and have some fun. It's my gaming home where I can always return to.

Dreamcast is second favorite and PS2 is third. PSX wins a honorable fourth place; I never had that console nor I had friends with it, and the emulation was kinda stiff back in the day, so I missed that era almost completely. But whenever I play something on that system now it feels like childhood, somehow.

So many decent memories as a kid, playing it around my uncle's house who was supposed to be babysitting and he'd come back mashed up from the clubs with his friends, I'd play Soul Edge and Wipeout with them at 2/3am - and win because they barely even knew where they were

It's odd just how far those demos managed to climb into the memories of people. I remember for ages I couldn't find a game demo I'd play over and over, turned out to be Felony 11/79 from the Euro demo 27.
But sadly I can't directly help you other than to say at least all of the demos have been dumped, so you can use a combination of
https://archive.org/download/redump.psx
to download the Euro Demos listed there and this list
https://crimson-ceremony.net/demopals/eurodemo/index.php
to see if that helps trigger any memories. Redump uses the naming convention from this site so it's actually really easy to use the two together. Eventually with enough digging you will find it. Then when you do, use jPSXdec to rip it from the bin and you'll have it forever.
