I wish we could get a Remaster of the Original Thief trilogy, but the 2014 Reboot's shittiness has probably axed any chances of that. At least the Dark Mod is around.

Finally finished Deadly Shadows. It's been a few years since I did 1 and 2 but DS is decent. It's a real shame THI4F is so fucking horribly written and the artstyle... Still the gameplay somehow keeps me going, but I am still wondering if I just should ditch it

At that point you're better off playing another franchise. I would either go with Filcher if you want no powers and T2 style heists (but no mantling) or one of the Dishonoreds if you want AAA stealth. That or try The Dark Mod but keep in mind that the AI awareness is considerably higher than Thief's in many ways and you will get spotted trying to do things that work in Thief on the higher difficulties.

>> No.8715995

Beat CoSaS Mission X. It was pretty good overall and I love the post T2 world they created but it's a shame we never got more content. The new mechanics offered some interesting tradeoffs with your knockout coated dagger functioning as a blackjack, but you had to wash out the bloodstain afterwards and the new lockpicking was interesting without being tedious. My only real complaint is that the original OldDark version is a scripting nightmare where any saves made during the mission leads to broken scripts. The parallels to this and Dishonored are very obvious, down to the mask Corvo and Dante use and make me wonder what a more stealth oriented/powerless Dishonored would be like.

Forgot to mention how at one point in the map you're expected to backtrack back to the lobby at the start to grab some keys and instead of doing that I just bashed open the doors that couldn't be picked or entered through a vent shaft/window which is a testament to its level design.

What I like about Thief a lot are its parallels to the other looking glass game, System Shock. Think about it.

Viktoria is all green and nature shit, SHODAN is while green, all about technology. They're the same, just on different sides of the coin. They're even voiced by the same woman.

In Thief, Garret walks the tightrope between the Nature Loving Pagans and the Mechanical Driven Mechanists. In that same vein, Soldier G65434-2 must walk a tightrope between the Biologically driven Many and the Cybernetically driven SHODAN.

God I love Thief.

iirc he posted in these threads before coming to ttlg. thus, his approach tends to align more with the discussions here than they do with the established design philosophy on ttlg.

>> No.8724364

>>8724357
TTLG is not one person and it changes all the time but this excerpt from an interview of Melan pretty much sums up what (used) to be TTLG's preferences.
>What inspired you to take up mapping, did you dabble in any other game design before Thief? Other than Thief, are there any games that you cite as examples of excellent game-play design and influences for your designs?

>It is all rather simple: my inspiration came specifically from some of my favourite Thief maps, Trial by Night, Lord Edmund Entertains, Walking the Edge and Calendra’s Cistern. I started editing because there were not many new missions in that style anymore in 2007. People then tended to prefer plot-based to exploration-based game-play, mansions to cities, a more Victorian to a Gothic-meets-technology look, the affairs of nobles to crime and sinister conspiracies and so on.

This extends to Shadow Play getting mediocre reviews when it first released because people were butthurt it didn't have enough readables scattered throughout the mission, instead focusing on atmosphere and exploration to tell a story.

>>8724357
It's kinda subjective and I'm not really an expert on the subject so I might get some stuff wrong. It just comes down to the fact TTLG has a certain style that is similar but different than the base games. You can tell they have a framed idea of what the game should be like and what the most important aspects are which everyone follows. The Darkmod has the same pattern.

Most of the location feels like a pathway to another location but not like a real place, and not even in the surreal "impossible layout" way a level like Lord Baffords mansion or Cragscleft does. Every readable has some dirty secret or corruption lore going on I don't care about. Having a loredump worked for Karrass because the notes you read were part of a bigger emerging story with well animated and voice acted cut scenes. You were being drip-fed facts about a guy that was already established to you. When it's just a hint on how to progress or find a secret for a 1-off mission I find it distasteful because I've already seen this shit copy pasted 100x before and it rips me out of the game. I don't remember any readables in Shadow Play but I distinctly remember the head boss having a hammer's head in a chest in his secret area which was way more impactful. Also just thematically a lot of TTLG missions I played didn't really capture the D&D/high fantasy vibes Thief had but Shadow Play did somehow.

I'm not saying TTLG's style is bad or anything either. It's just getting repetitive and the flaws become more apparent everytime I play one.

TTLG trends are pretty noticeable yeah
Like all the Thieves Highway intricate rooftop missons like Endless Rain or Feast of Pilgrims (obviously the latter is more recent), or having fuckhuge missions where you keep getting new objectives everytime you finish what was supposed to be the "final" objective
One guy on here about a year or so ago was complaining about missions that have you sneaking through a regular mansion/castle before eitherh having to go through it again with supernatural threats or stumble upon a cordoned off "horror" section of the location
TTLG trends aren't really bad, but they do become tiresome, which is why lately I've really been looking for unique missions, Into the Odd spoiled me I think

Newdark ports thief to the source engine, right? Does it have any drawbacks? I played through thief gold already, but the cutscene audio didn't work. no big, I watched them on youtube. But I was watching a playthrough and realized the in-level plot audio also didn't work, so I missed a lot (like the guy dying in cragscleft).

Also, how did I miss this training level? Is it because I only played on expert?

No, it's just an engine update by anonymous frenchmen that raise lots of engine limits, adds an extensive scripting system for fan missions, improves mantling, as well as better widescreen support. Basically there are source code leaks out there for Thief 2 and SS2 but none of them are complete so that you can compile them, but the frenchies found a way so it's not a vague approximation like the Blood re-releases.
You can play the training mode even on expert and if cutecene audio isn't working AND you installed Tfix Lite, something is wrong with your install.
