Too bad that the vast majority of people played the shitty gamecube port, and not the original Dreamcast version.

Sonic Adventure, Crash Bandicoot, and Super Mario 64 did not age. They were great on release date and they're great now.

I just think Crash bandicoot 1 has stronger level design than Mario 64.

>> No.8708845

Super Mario 64 is better just for the fact that you don't have to collect tokens to go to a bonus level just so you can save your game.

>> No.8708860

>>8708845
Yeah, I will admit that Crash 1's saving system is jank, but thanks to emulators and save states, that flaw can be bypassed now and the game's strengths can truly shine now.

CB is an on rails game, basically 2.5D. you can't really compare the level design directly.

I'd agree in terms of controls, but that mostly has to do with the fact that Crash's moveset is far simpler than Mario's.

Mario 64's design has aged a lot better. Crash really doesn't do that much with the fact it's a 3-D game and requiring you don't die to get gems in a game designed to be difficult is bullshit straight out of the "How do we make a 60mb file worth $60" days.

Naughty Dog's ethos hasn't changed in 25 years. They put their entire focus into production values while not breaking any mold in terms of gameplay.

That famous making-of blog post goes into heavy detail about their elaborate animation systems and per-pixel occlusion culling but when it gets to the gameplay it's mostly "we just copied what DKC did and then flipped the perspective".

I have a big soft spot for the original Crash. There's just something about the music and atmosphere that I didn't feel with Crash 2 and 3.
