-no sprawling town levels

-doesn't ramp up to near-impossible difficulty past map10

I like to play pistol start and savor every level so it helps if the levels are mostly good quality.

rejecting your assertion that UV is the "really intended" skill for mappers. a great deal of them, specially the ones that do harder WADs, explicitly tell players to start on HMP or HNTR, sometimes even ITYTD. they design UV as an NG+ of sorts, meant for later playthroughs

you could always play a WAD through on a lower difficulty, and then go through it again on a second playthrough on a higher difficulty now that you know the layout of the maps. WADs don't have to be a one-and-done kind of deal.

That's not a sane mentality to have with Doom, because not all mapsets are created equal, what someone considers easy might be very hard for you. How people balance things also varies, some people (like for instance John Romero), uses Hurt Me Plenty as the baseline, and then scales things up for Ultra-Violence and scales things down for Hey Not Too Rough.

I use Ultra-Violence as my baseline, I aim to make the level challenging, but I also implement lower difficulties for good reason, if my level is too hard for you, but you refuse to try it on any difficulty but UV, then what the fuck did I even spend time on implementing difficulty levels for? I went out of my way to accommodate you, and those accommodations may have well allowed you to enjoy the .wad, but you don't even bother trying.

Swallow your pride, recognize that Doom 1 and Doom 2 are mostly easygoing on UV, but that UV can mean just about anything. Just because you could do Plutonia on UV doesn't mean that you will then be ready to do Alien Vendetta, Deus Vult II, or Sunlust on UV, those are in a completely different ballpark.
There's nothing wrong with that either, because as long you keep playing Doom and you don't shy away from some challenge, you will continue to git gud.

Overall I think Valiant is harder or at least more punishing to mistakes because the new monsters do way more damage. Ancient Aliens isn't easy by any means but it is challenging especially towards end whereas Valiant starts getting challenging much earlier.

Depends on where you want to start. If you're familiar with programming languages you'll probably take to Zscript fastest, but you'll then have to work with GZDoom whether you like it or not. Decorate is super simple and even cavemen like me can learn to make stuff with it. ACS is a bit of a side one that has more to do with mapping, but can be used to make scripts affect the game in a lot of other ways as well. For art Frankenspriting is generally the way non-artists start, while 3d modelers can do some neat tricks to kinda generate sprites. Mapping is pretty simple to learn for the most part, but I feel like "good" mapping comes more from understanding encounter design and architecture.

Dude no. .pk3s are the zip files that the text files go in. They can be opened with 7zip. The text file itself should be called decorate. Or, your decorate file could point to it. So you'd make a folder, put the text file with the ammo in it, and in the decorate, write

DB2 still works fine, hell, DB1 still works very well for what it is, that's why it became THE map making software for Doom overnight when it came out, it basically worked like the new ones do now, making it infinitely superior to all preexisting options.

That was about my experience too after I stuck with it. Though I only really had problems with 6 because the map layout was so annoying - had no idea the going into the teleporter from different sides even could spit you out in different places - and the cyberdemon at the end took me a couple tries before I became smart enough to just run to the other side of the room and bfg him from there instead of trying to dart in and out on that ledge.

I don't think I'll be doing UV pistol start any time soon. I might try hundred percenting a few episodes, though. But I want to try modding and I did just get Dusk.

Remember that making practice saves, going over the difficult bits and planning out your route before you actually do the attempts is very important. The chainsaw is a little clunky, but it actually is really good for pinkies, stunlocking them with good reliability (and it's easy to dodge their bite when they don't stun). If you're brave you can try it on lone Cacos, as they have a high pain chance, but watch out, they bite HARD.

I made my first DOOM mod, thanks to the anon that helped me the other day.

I've felt that the shotgun is overcentralized and given too much ammo for my tastes, so for my own personal play I wanted a mod that reduced it. So now I have a mod that makes the shell item give you 3 ammo (even changed the graphic and dialogue to reflect this), shotguns give 6, and boxes of shells give 10, and made the shotgun zombies drop shells instead of shotguns. I made the ammo clips the regular zombies drop give 12 instead of 10 to compensate. I feel pretty damn good about successfully creating my first DOOM mod.

Me too, they're comfy, red torches casting a warm red glow over its immediate area, alternatively a cold blue one or a strange green one, adds a lot to atmosphere.
Brightmaps are also really nice, I think it's really cool when you can see the bright eyes of a Pinky or Caco in the dark as they getting up to you, along with computer monitors and switches standing out.

I might bump that up to 15 or even 20. And increase maximum bullet capacity too if you want to make the chaingun more of a focus. I like using it, but it's so weak with such a small ammo pool, but you're always pretty much brought down to empty after a tough encounter. It's like, okay cool, I used the chaingun for one big fight and now I need to spend the next 15 minutes gathering ammo before I can even touch it again.

I honestly would have forgotten it exists entirely if it weren't a very slightly better long range option than the shotgun.

With the real strain on junk availability early on, it makes sense to upgrade the .45 revolver firts for the bonus dmg. Mid game, I find the double barrel upgrades great at dropping Fat boys and anomalies. When you start to get an abundance of junk, upgrade the smg 9mm and buy up all the 9 mm ammo you can. I made the AM page because I wanted to make sure you guys got credit for being first but remarkability doesn't matter, the only standards of notability for WADs are that they're published and in a relatively final state. I've got skeletons made up for all the other projects but I need to do some manual stuff for generating the map views before I'm ready to create any of them. I started thinking about how you could fit the controls for this onto a gamepad. I don’t think you can do so without sacrificing a trigger or bumper as a sort of “modifier” button so something like the “X” button could be three different things: X, trigger+X, and bumper+X, just as an example. I'd argue that in the context of a community project the de facto leadership falls to the community in the event the original lead abandons it for a long time, which is why I wanted to get some other opinions. That being said since the lead has apparently expressed interest in returning within the last few months (albeit in the form of a youtube comment) and others have mixed opinions I've decided I won't do anything for the time being. I'll revisit it again if he hasn't done anything by october but I'd heavily encourage him to do so before that.
