i wouldnt really call it an rpg.
It has rising numbers but so did the 1st zelda game and no one calls that an rpg.

Zelda 1 did not have a leveling system. Zelda 2 did.
It's an Action-RPG.

>> No.869863

>>869862
What does a leveling system has to do with the game being a RPG?

Not RPG. ARPG.

Try the Wonder Boy series OP.
The first one is just adventure island, but the sequels are more zelda esque

>> No.869876

I liked Zelda II as well. I feel like it's lack of popularity is because people wanted more Zelda 1, and they got something completely different. If it was a new IP people would have loved it, I reckon.

wikipedia isn't good for all things.

rpg in games is terribly defined.

if devil may cry changed the name of orbs to 'experience points' and was published by square soft people would insist it was an rpg.

if every 1,000 enemies samus killed gave her a free energy tank and missle upgrade people would call that an rpg

"RPG" is a loose umbrella term for a variety of concepts, largely derived from D&D originally.

Most often when someone says "RPG", they're referring to character progression.

idiots cant understand the difference between an action-adventure game and an a APRG and think that if a game contains even the slightest of RPG elements it makes it an ARPG instead of an action-adventure.

take this schmuck for example-
>>869862

I know some games are hard to categorize but Zelda 2 isn't one of them. It's an action-adventure game. always has been always will be.

Faxanadu is pretty baller.

If you like Z2 because the horrible pain of its difficulty makes you feel funny deep down in your pants, play Gargoyle's Quest II and come buckets.

pretty much this.
zelda 2: top down exploration but combat is 2d, slowly gain levels and abilities
gargoyles quest 2: top down exploration but combat is 2d, slowly gain levels and abilities

op go play it now don't listen to all this "it's not an rpg it's an arpg" bullshit

Zelda 1 and 2 are action RPGs.

That's exactly how they were described at the time. A mixture of arcade action and PC RPGs.

All solid recommendations!

Mystical Ninja 2, aka Goemon's Great Adventure. No levelling but a solid sidescroller with town areas and quests.

and Super Adventure Island on the snes! It's pretty much if Zelda II got a snes edition.

and it's not /vr/ but Zenonia

it sold like hot cakes because everyone liked the first. People were disappointed when it wasn't more of the same and then become unpopular. The internet didn't exist so information did not travel as quickly as today so people didn't know until they bought it.

Are there reviews from that era that back that up? Everyone I knew loved this game when it came out, and I never heard negative shit about it until the last decade, at the most. The attitude I remember just before then, say late 90s, was "good, but hard, and Zelda 3 was better".

>> No.878712

>>878664
Same. I don't remember hearing anything negative about it until the late 90s which makes me wonder how much of the hate is from Ocarina kiddies.
