One of 3 or 4 games JVC published in the US for the Sega-CD (which they did a lot of the hardware design for) launch in 1993.

I actually had a friend in elementary school in the mid 90s that had this game

>> No.8694958

Pretty much anything unabashedly explicitly culturally Japanese like this and Pocky & Rocky. Released in the same America where they would delete Japanese background text in anime and leave it blank, turn riceballs into jelly doughnuts, and pretend things took place in the US instead of Japan.
The most these two games did was change names and terminology, but then Starring Goemon came out and they just said fuck it and kept everything in tact.

JVC did barely fuck all hardware design for the Sega CD. One of the late year Sega CD 2s used a JVC drive, and they had the X-Eye 1-2 which also used their CD drive plus a custom case. And even the CD drive they "made" just used a JVC pickup, but the actual drive logic was the same as other Sega CDs (Sony and Hitachi ICs).

At most they were OEMs for the console, but they didn't design the hardware at any point, Sega just used their off-the-shelf components.

This one seriously blows my mind. A game based on an adult oriented manga series that had little to no exposure in the west in the 80's and it came here almost in its entirety. Beside the breasts you can see at one point basically everything was preserved, including the sex scene where you see the breasts and levels where you use a sniper to assassinate people.

A chance at what? NEC of America had basically had the plug plugged from under the TGFX by that stage. Their localisation projects had always been a labour of love and that needs to be emphasised ten times here. This game was released late, solely as mail order, to a tiny community. Hence it's rarity and, partly i'll grant because it is a good game, current value.

Funny that "the line" in regards to Pocky and Rocky was expecting Americans to accept a protagonist called Sayo, and a character who's a tanooki rather than a raccoon.
They also inserted another Japanese cultural reference by calling the character Pocky, and I don't know if anyone even knew what Pocky was in the early 90's.

I don't remember anime being big in the UK at all. There was a short period in the 90's when you could find it on the sci-fi channel, but apart from that, it doesn't really have any pull on popular culture. We barely got Adult Swim or anything.
