Crocomire. The door locks behind you, so you fight him, but he's also a prisoner and can't go anywhere but to his death. While dying, with his last strength, he breaks the cage and frees you so that at least one of you can carry on and live.

I do like the MGS games well enough in gameplay terms, but the contrast in weight for character deaths from the original MSX games -as primitive as they were- in comparison to the 3D games is really an indication of Kojima losing his way when creating involved emotional experiences: the original GF boss battle was a perfect climax, but in MGS you're robbed of agency in that regard, and even when it comes to dealing the final blow to Liquid.

Always had mixed feelings about this animated cutscene in the remake; it's really emotional and I like the creepy inserts of Janus predicting Crono's death, but in the end it lacks the blunt impact of the original in which out of nowhere your main character gets literally obliterated.

I think there's something to be said also about the way that the less tech and less 3d and less camera movement that games have, even the lack of voice acting can lend itself to players paying more attention, using their imagination more, and interpreting events their own way instead of everything being animated for you with actors voicing it and the player just kind of drooling at the screen. For FF7 it's hard to see the death of Aerith as being the same in the remake even if it was a new thing, because it's going to leave little to the imagination and just going to kind of whiz by you.
Also, anyone know of any games with Tomino endings, aka everyone dies? Not just one character.

The game still was censored- all bars were changed into cafes, some female-like enemies were edited to show less skin and to get rid of the cigarretes they were smoking, and some dialigues were edited, like Edgar's interest on Relm or the drunk chick who teased Cyan by flaunting her breasts to him.
On top of that the GBA re release axed out the scene where a guard is beating the hell out of a chained Celes.

It's target demographic was children from about 7 or 8 to adults. Same aa shounen comics which are in a 'boys' magazine but expected to be read by adults as well. Comics were always more violent and lewd than games. Even now in Shounen Jump they have comics with people getting chopped up and guys touching ass and seeing titties.
A big giveaway is when these games were able to do more text and could use much more complex kanji they never used them and kept vocabulary and dialogue at a level that kids could understand, and didn't use kanji for many words that regularly use them because it might be too hard for kids.
If you compare it to SMT then you see SMT is for a slightly older audience as a child would have a lot of trouble reading it. If you then went to something like a simulation game or adult orientated game then the language and kanji etc... can get even more difficult.

(Correct) Deistinction between child and adolescent. 11-14 pretty much says "a grown up child", 15-17 means " growing out of childhood, becoming young adult. There is HUGE difference between 13 and 16, bodily and mentally, a 16 year old is not a kid anymore but for a 13 year old most people would still use the term.

I'm talking about the Arcade version of Double Dragon II, of course. The NES version doesn't even show her being gunned down (it's just tells you what happened with static images and text) and the ending adds some Disney bullshit where it turns out that the Ultimate Warrior (a character who never existed in the arcade games) simply put a sleeping spell on her all this time.

The arcade versions of Double Dragon 1 & 2 were pretty much straight to the point. The first game starts with the gang members beating up and carrying off your girlfriend and then the second game starts with her being gunned down, all using in-engine assets. No fancy attract demos explaining everything through long-winded expository text. Double Dragon 3 did end up having a more conventional attract demo, but its story somehow makes less sense than the first two games.
