>So far, people have been trying for two decades.
Not for Saturn, no. Various people looked at PSX and PSP ports of different TokiMemo titles and found the internal way text is stored to be hell. Same for the SNES version actually, but DDS pulled off the incredible feat. PC Engine versions are rarely considered seriously because of the console's heavy reliance on voice acting in general, and it alongside Saturn had no respectable emulators for general use let alone debugging.

at the beginnings of the dates, when your character or the girl ask each other things like「待った?」it's not to inquire "You were waiting for me?" even though the literal translation is just "Waited?" it's part of the system by which you can determine "who is more into whom." if your character goes to the date site and the girl is already there, he is basically asking "Were you waiting long?" as part of etiquette, which we do in english as well.

he was only "internet famous" for a long time, but much of what you hear now is sort of propagandized, often by tim himself. because even by that metric he was only known to people on the internet who also were both into games and prehistoric shitposting, in the way that like... seanbaby is notable, though that comparison doesn't really hold up under scrutiny. he kept screaming until the bottom fell out from online/gaming journalism and he came to be viewed as notable simply by virtue of outlasting anyone with integrity or taste.

hence his ascension with kotaku, the video game version of such riveting outlets as jezebel and deadspin. he took advantage of this platform to make a number of videos that continued to balloon in length with time. some of these videos are actually very good, like his dragon quest ones, and the crown jewel, his ff7 series. this along with the connections he'd made throughout the years failing out of any career in writing, game development, music -- you name it -- allowed him to finally con his way into whatever you'd call what he does now. it's a masterclass in the notion that putting in enough time and effort and sticking around for long enough will eventually cause people to break character and finally acknowledge that you exist. that, and give you the ability to reap "legacy" benefits.

Seems like it was common practice to Konami to release PS1 titles for Saturn with different things. Happened with Castlevania and Suikoden too, but the additions and changes to both of them are treated more like curiosities and the PS1 is still the go to versions today. Can't say if it's the same feeling for TokiMemo though.

My nitpick about the translation is something that happens a lot in some official translations too, the choice of changing the surnames to the first name. I get it it's more natural for us, but Japanese has this thing of only using first names for people they are close. It just doesn't feel authentic for me.

Tom (the translator) didn't even realize tranny was a controversial word. It's only gained that connotation in the last few years, really. I remember they often used to call themselves that, at least over a decade ago.

On newhalf, just like with tranny (at least in former days), it can be used playfully or derogatively, depending on context, as usual. There's a lot of mocking of transexuals/crossdressers in the Goemon series, in general, so it's not the translator's fault for accurately representing the meaning of the Japanese developer's content.

The 1950s were a special case. That was right in the middle of a period of prescriptive language pretentiousness. It's where we got "rules" like not to split infinitives (ex: to boldly go) or end sentences with a preposition. It was all the English class nonsense we were taught by boomer teachers who were taught it as kids themselves. That eventually started to break once people and many professional writers realized it was junk.

>> No.8691580

Split infinitive shit is nothing more than a result of poor language design. English is trash and the fact that infinitives require "to" in order to exist is a failing of the language itself.
Don't end a sentence with a preposition is also a dogshit rule founded on the implication, but not the necessity, of a word following it. Other language use this exact construct to great effect, by design (this "rule" would drive a Japanese learning English native insane) and it's founded on nothing but the language itself being poorly thought out.

There's nothing wrong with splitting an infinitive though. It has nothing to do with English as a language. But the only reason you don't split infinitives in Romance languages is because you literally can't since infinitives are single words in them. It's square peg, round hole shenanigans.

The PSP version is very different which pretty much required a re-translation. The scripts don't really align last I checked. The iOS version the files are pretty much 1:1 with the Saturn version hence why it was the rosetta stone so to speak with figuring out the file formats to translate the Saturn version. So it just made sense to use the older WD translation because it fits and was a quick and easy conversion.

The PSP audio was used though because apparently Vic Ireland threw a hissy fit if they tried to use the WD audio. Since the FMVs and voiced sequences are the same in the PSP and Saturn/PS1 versions, that worked.

>>8693143
>That's not what Tokimeki means exactly.
Are you referring to its usage as a term for excitement? I don't think there's a completely equivalent English term that confers both an actual heartbeat plus why a heart beats out of romantic thrill, but "heartthrob (though I personally would like "heartbeat" more) conveys it to some degree, plus also having a general context of romance (whether or not exactly appropriate, here) while also conveying its own double-meaning (again, whether or not it needs to have that extra meaning of "stud"/"babe" is debateable, yet still quite negligible, and, possibly also an interesting addition).

>>8692720
It does sound a bit odd, considering how we typically view the series' structure (as you being excited for the girls), but not only is it an accurate translation technically-speaking, it is true that (in the ideal gameplay) the girls find you a heartthrob in the sense of lady killer.

Yeah. I don't understand why there's an issue with a translated title that also has an established name. If the title were an inaccurate translation, though, I would understand that. hyperthymesia is specifically attuned to "one's own personal experience." it allows for a lot of leeway in how one presents such superior memory since the line is kind of vague. after all, even the absorption of mundane materials amounts to a "personal experience" because no two people will ever perceive the same stimuli in the exact same manner. so why do you remember how many times you've had ravioli in your life but not the experience of your wholly unique brain chemistry reading detailed passages from textbooks?

ergo, hyperthymesia is more convenient for grifters and the self-deluded. it's a claim anyone can make because no one can confirm or deny your own life experience and what resonates with you. if you strike up a conversation with me and record it, then ask me to "play it back" and i get it wrong, it would be academic for me to come up with some justification as to why i don't have perfect memory of it. perhaps i consider personal interactions to exist outside of my concept of "self." however, this wouldn't even preclude me from being able to recite whatever else i want to appear informed or impressive, because i can claim some sort of, e.g., emotional tie to anything i do remember, even only putatively. and my "ravioli" parlor tricks that i pepper in, uttered with enough immediacy and confidence, just might be enough to make you start believing, along with a healthy dose of garden-variety memory palaces.

i don't have much experience with sfc but if the mechanics are the same as forever with you, the most optimal strategy for more difficult girls like shiori and megumi is simply to round-robin the girls that you have out in the open, provided you weren't reckless and have like a million of them. you can skip some girls if they have birthdays coming up so it's worth keeping track of those.

you can still occasionally call yoshio if you're really in the dark but it's more efficient just to get ahead of the "upkeep." if you're waiting until someone bombs (meaning you passed up some period of time where you could have prevented it through diligence) and then wasting another turn calling yoshio that could be used to prevent another potential future bomb with a date, you're already fighting a losing battle that's going to snowball. furthermore, you're eventually going to need to stand someone up on a date to address a bomb, which is even worse.

the only one who is kind of on shiori's level is megumi because you basically have to date both and then half-dump shiori. but the flipside of it is that megumi, like yumi, likes you a fuckton just by default and is very easy/obvious to please. shiori is a bit pickier.

with yuina i would say her likes, dislikes, and mood patterns are a bit more nebulous than most/all of the other "one stat" girls, and she has a funny end-stage event the others don't have, but on the whole she's still easier than shiori. most of the girls you can "skip leg day" so to speak and this effectively means you will meet fewer girls if you're careful, whereas to get shiori, megumi, and yumi to some extent you have to boost several stats and also choose the right level of higher education

In one of the endings you have to tell Momotarō to Iris. The change to Goldilocks itself isn't the end of the world, it's a small ~10 textbox conversation 5 minutes before the credits roll yet it's very telling making such an unnecessary localization. The patch's audience not being familiar with it is a weak excuse. You get multiple chances to say the right thing, you either get no punishment or very little since you're already locked into your ending anyway and surprise, a Japanese game about plays and tales from all over the world is going to have a Japanese tale in it. I doubt anyone playing a fan patch of a game called Sakura Wars is going to be floored by such a thing.

Keep in mind this isn't the only change done, just the dumbest one I've seen from one playthrough in a game where you need multiple to see everything.

2 is sometimes considered the best game and while it's "expanded" in some ways and ahead of its time in others, i find it mostly tacky. it had a magazine (that had the vocal discs packed in with them) that corresponded with the in-game magazine, and real-life forums and shit where you were supposed to RP, which of course are now defunct. so you can hunt down those mags and try to wayback machine the websites and such but that aspect of it is basically gone. the voice synthesizer is cool for like 5 seconds and then it's just an anchor

then, there's the fact that it's a "b-team" game and it shows. no koji igarashi, no key programmers or artists returning, and only one returning composer who isn't even the important one. much of the game's soundtrack is stock music. everything is poorly optimized like aspects of the GUI being misaligned in various ways. the competitive nature of how any girl you're not pursuing works against you is basically gone, so there's very little planning or challenge. and worst of all, the characters are all retarded anime tropes. tokimemo 1's aren't *exactly* lifelike mind you and the game has shit like final fantasy battles but it's basically like comparing cowboy bebop to lucky star or some shit

Seeing it in context, I 100% agree with his choice to change it to a different story. The point of that sequence is that Momotaro is a story every Japanese player would know, so the alternate options are only there if the player wants to see what happens if they screw up telling the story. The content of the story is completely irrelevant (unless there's some over-arching context I'm missing). Changing it to a story that American players would know is kind of needed to capture the original experience.

And to be fair, burntends wasn't even the one who made that change. The team decided to make it for the exact reason you brought up. To actually play that part correctly the player needs to be familiar with the story, and most people playing the English patch wouldn't know the original story.

While burntends localization vs translation crusade is concerning, he's not nearly as involved as he appears. With Sakura Wars projects at least there's a pretty large team of translators and editors working together on it. He's barely involved.

the looks stat could be borderline also. bear in mind that there is some vague +/- wiggle room with everything so riding the line of what she supposedly needs may not be enough. but most people who have gotten shiori that i've seen or spoken to (albeit for forever with you) seem to have lacked something or other and still gotten her so there may be something else in play like getting the right or wrong fortune. not sure if miharu tatebayashi shows up if the game can't decide which girl you qualify for or if you just suck but not too hard, or both. surely if you got someone else in tokimeki state you'd know, right?

I always understood the logic behind the change. But the result is still an unnecessary localization. This isn't "they used the wrong word here, trash translation" or dealing with some kanji wordplay bullshit, it's just a full-on replacement with the cover of being for the developer's intent.

It's like renaming all the movies and musicians in Tokimeki to more familiar things. It would be funny if Saki walked up to me and asked if I want to catch ABCD (originally ELDERMETAL) but it's still too big of a change, even for something so minor. It's interesting to me that Tom gets a lot of (understandable) shit for Heartthrob but at worst it's just a translation of what was already there. Meanwhile he kept the movie and musician names as is. I don't know why but I assume it's because changing them is beyond what he feels a translation is meant to do, even if people won't get the references. A bit clunkier yet a much more agreeable conduct in my eyes. Of course translators don't have to follow some made up guidelines and can do whatever the fuck they want with THEIR project and burntends fancies himself a localizer but I think more people will complain about a fan patch being too localized versus not localized enough.

Sorry for these massive waits for replies.

I think the difference is that there's a gameplay component to this specific example. It's similar to how if a puzzle involves a wordplay riddle, nobody really has a problem with a translation throwing it out and replacing it with something that can conceivably be solved in English. Like one project I worked on had a character who was CONSTANTLY referencing anime and movie quotes from shit nobody in the west would recognize (hell, we're pretty sure we only understood around half of them). But they didn't really affect gameplay in any meaningful way, so there was no need to really change them to something people in the west would recognize, even though that aspect of his character got lost in translation (plus, there were a couple like "Where do you want to fall?" that I'm sure at least a few people understood). Then there were other instances where one of the dialog options would be something like "If you don't enter the tiger's den...". There's a case where we decided it was better to localize the line to "Nothing ventured...", just because making sure the player understood what the dialog option meant "go in" was more important than preserving half of a Chinese proverb.

That's not how you weigh these kinds of things. You make or don't make changes based on what's right. The title shouldn't have been changed because the game already has an established presence even outside of Japan. The foreign lingo Ayako uses should have been maintained in proportion to the target language.

The answer isn't to change everything wholesale or play everything safe. That's an excuse not to think.

A history: A company named élf made a sequel to their famous dating sim series called Kakyuusei 2 (First game in the series, Doukyuusei was the precursor to dating sims even before Tokimeki Memorial, and pretty huge in Japan. The company themselves used to be a behemoth in the eroge industry, with YU-NO, -saku series, Dragon Knight series, and Doukyuusei/Kakyuusei series under their belt, along with numerous other old VNs.) They spend much on promotional materials to advertise this new dating sim game, with an anime series that comes out before the game. They are so confident that the game will success, that they dare to put the release date of the game the same as Rance VI to rival Alice Soft (Look to the VNDB release date on both games if you don't believe me). But when the game comes out, it revealed to the players that:

1. The face of the game, the childhood friend main heroine Saimon Tamaki, told the MC when asked that she already in relationship with a rich medical student, and still in relationship with said boyfriend when the player enters her route. This is in contrast to all previous main heroines in their previous games of the series that doesn't have any boyfriend or even any knowledge of sex beforehand.

2. The scenes. The player can spot said childhood friend main heroine kissed, an groped on the crotch by said boyfriend while she clearly looks enjoying it. In front of the peeping MC. WITH EXCLUSIVE CG DEDICATED TO THE SCENE. You also can sometime catch her just walks out of a love hotel when exploring the city. In previous games, the heroine can flies off to another guy, but that's failure event if the player doesn't chase said heroine or fail spectacularly trying to get her. Here, it's a normal CG that you can get when trying to get her, and one will only unlock if you have sufficient affection rating to her. So the player basically already 'lost' her before the game starts.

I agree with both of you.

I think that The name should have been left untouched as the majority of people that already knew about the me before the translation was released knew it by it's original name. Using Attack on Titan doesn't really make sense because it was a widely released commercial product that the majority, i'm talking like 99% of people who heard about it after it was translated, didn't know what it was before hand.

However, I also agree with you that if you want to complain and get that frustrated about it, go and learn Japanese and play it. I did so myself last year and it was probably my best gaming memory of the year, if not for a few years.

3. The heroine's personality and route. During her route, it's necessary that you take her to dates if you want to get despite knowing that she already has a boyfriend. Later on, after her affection rating is high enough, her boyfriend starts taking her home after you date her. The day after that, when you meet her again, the MC asks if it's okay to keep dating her, she assures him it's fine. After being fetched 1 or 2 more times by said boyfriend after you date her, you find her having a quarrel with said boyfriend in front of a love hotel because she keeps dating her childhood friend, before he finally breaks up with her, wishing her happiness with the MC afterwards, and leaves with his car. After that she depressed and you have to cheer her up by being her rebound guy.

Later in her first sex scene the MC asks if she has done sex with the boyfriend, she confirms it and asks him to understand because she loved her very much.

Nevertheless, all these pissed people very much, which is understandable.

i suspect at least one of you is being purposefully dishonest and another one of you is just not trying to use your brain at all on your own before asking questions (which is aggravating) but i'm betting at least one out of three is genuinely curious and willing to listen:

just because you know dis/assembly for a certain system doesn't mean you can weave in and out of any rom or iso like it's nothing. games still have their own inherent architecture to them and need to be figured out on their own somewhat. tokimemo also has what we might call "special needs" and requires a fair bit of extra image work and things like retooling for player name logic compared to your average game.

on top of that, tokimemo sfc had at least one aborted translation project in the past where the hackers and translators left behind notes and tools, which may have helped (i don't know exactly what the process these guys used was). there's plenty of old forum posts and such to go along with that as well, so presumably they weren't starting from absolute zero. yet the hackers involved in this did, i think, do a very good job, because it does seem to run mostly well on most emulators and hardware, and without any glitches or anything. it probably took somewhat rare skill and quite a bit of extra specialization that may have been cultivated over a long period of time. hence... maybe be more choosy about your script monkey, since from the player side of things that is ultimately the key component

Aside from the people who were around his level who he seems to actually be friends with like the other journalists he often shit talks the place as a whole for being corporate trash. Im paraphrasing and can't really cite any particular segment but when he was still making videos for kotaku he would get weirdly defensive about people asking "why are you at a place like that? what you do is so much better than everything else there" and it's obvious now that he agreed with those sentiments

It´s a rpg/dating sim hybrid you are a vampire , you can suck the blood of so many side girls (among your victims exist a girl who love shotas and you must act like one if you want to suck her blood, your teacher , a samurai , a ojou , a loli (you can´t suck her blood but you receive a kiss in the cheek) fight with vampire hunters , etc. The game it´s pretty easy but you are gonna need a guide for events and dates : for example girls always rejects your dates if you don´t date the others , you need to upgrade your familiar if you want better info and cg , etc pretty good but the translation it´s so-so

>> No.8701189

just make sure they're in the same folder as the rom and that the rom has the same name as the .msu file, in other words, make sure it's named "Heartthrob Memorial (English).sfc" Also, if you're trying to use bsnes make sure to download the latest version of the patch since it's got files that bsnes needs to run the game correctly

>I think the difference is that there's a gameplay component to this specific example
Yeah the thought that my example wasn't a perfect comparison was in my head but it was way too easy of a target to pick in a Tokimeki thread. It's not like you're barred from progress if you screw up the Goldilocks thing though like say a quiz game like Tokimeki Houkago, or someone killing you and sending you back to a save point. But your point is good.

I still wouldn't trust burntends if he were left alone in a room with a translated game script though. His axe to grind with "the weebs" is way too big. Hell I thought the Bulk Slash dub actually sounded really good but obviously people will complain about it, yet he goes off and gets in fights with them in the CDR comments. Not a good look.

I'd argue that the "well people know it as Tokimeki" argument doesn't really hold water because this is at best a niche game outside of Japan. The whole point of fan translating it and localizing the title is to make it more accessible to the broad English speaking audience. Despite all the vigorous claims to the contrary here, nobody did it before this because nobody cared enough. Those who did either know enough Japanese that they played it in the original language, or they used a FAQ/Walkthrough to get through it.
Basically, none of these "arguments" hold any water, they're just bad faith gatekeeping over some weeb dating sim.
