Is it cheating to use a d-pad to play Donkey Kong?

>> No.8687901

no because they released it for nes, which came with dpad controllers

>> No.8687912

>>8687901
But that is Donkey Kong for NES, not Donkey Kong arcade.

>cheating
doesn't matter unless you're making money off people, or people look up to you after cheating, or you're pretending to be something you're not.

>>8687927
what about submitting high scores?

>> No.8688064

what would be the difference? if anything it's easier with an arcade stick.
anyway, I play the DK64 port.

Well you can use savestates through Mame as far as Guinness is concerned, so go nuts.

My only problem with that port is as far as I can tell there is no way to fully reset your playthrough so every time you go back to it you start back at whatever loop you ended on. I think it's funny how DK64 was the only "official" arcade port of it all the way until only a few years ago. Every other port Nintendo did was the NES version.

Not allowed. Can't even use a modern Sanwa or Seimitsu stick. Probably have to use an original leaf switch button too.

You'd be a few milliseconds faster with a d-pad, I think. And for a lot of players a d-pad just feels more natural after years of using that method.

You can access DK arcade from the main menu. You always start at the first loop.

I'd buy one of these and build a little custom arcade stick with it if it wasn't EIGHTY FRICKIN' DOLLARS. And that's just for a repro version. A Nintendo original goes for $100+.

So I will stick with my LS-32 in 4 way mode.

As far as DK goes they are the authority.
Although I bet one of these days someone will post a kill screen on a handheld device. Portable DK is a fun time killer.

I never saw a Donkey Kong machine in the 90s.

I have never seen one anywhere. I've seen pacman etc. in Diners, I've seen Metal Slug at laundromats, never ever seen Donkey Kong

probably because it's a shitty game

>> No.8688667

>>8688637
I saw a couple of them in bars after the King of Kong came out.
But in the 90s? nada
I guess arcade OPs thought nobody gave a shit about the game anymore (they were correct btw)

>> No.8688673

>>8688667
Only time I saw one in the 90's was in some shitty diner in a middle of nowhere town of 2000 people. They probably got it for cheap, after an arcade dumped it off or whatever.

A stick is the most ergonomic method of input as proven by competitive fighters, so you'd be just gimping yourself.

You're not wrong.
Same with Animal Crossing, they didn't advertise the fact it also serves as a sort of Classic NES collection.

>> No.8689873

nah, they only use them because of tradition, plenty are starting to migrate to Hitbox style controllers as everyone with a brain realizes that buttons are optimal for purely digital games

>> No.8690296

>>8689776
Definitely not for a game like Donkey Kong. A hitbox or d-pad is just going to be much quicker and more accurate. Especially compared to the stock joystick in a Nintendo cabinet.

>> No.8690704

why would it be cheating if the game itself cheats

The d-pad was literally invented for Donkey Kong.

Pic related was the first one. The Famicom controller is similar because being able to play Donkey Kong was a priority for the system.

Shit game
You'll nevah git the million
Nevah.

>> No.8691298

The classic tetris world championship requires you to use an NES controller. That always seemed strange to me, especially seeing as they allow modified "goofy foot" controllers but nothing else.
Not sure if they'd let you use a famicom controller. You're not allowed to use repro or 3rd party controllers. And certainly not something like a hitbox which would greatly ease most of the advanced strategies players use in that game.

>> No.8691334

Yeah it has to be a specific revision of the Donkey Kong arcade boards to even count for world record attempts.

this is retarded as shit, no wonder all of their records are fake bullshit. You'd have to be insane to even try to attempt to get the right hardware to "legitimately" beat the record. Why the fuck does this matter to them, you can enter a Street Fighter 2 tournament with a PS4 controller and it's fine.

I don't think it would've been something worth putting on the back of the box (especially given that this was a big 3D game and had THAT as the selling point), plus it would've been a spoiler on beating the game. Better just to have it show up "randomly" as an easter egg in a level as a special treat for the kids playing DK64.

>> No.8695018
