I used to use a mid-2000s PC CRT monitor specifically for emulation (pic related), and from a viewing distance of around 3 feet, it wasn't THAT different from some of the more simple CRT shaders.

Unless you got REAL close to the screen, the phosphors were unnoticeable, and whites/brighter colors were BRIGHT and not darkened by the gaps between scanlines, as some shaders (and this photo) make them appear.
The scanlines themselves vary in thickness depending on the brightness of the color displayed, tapering out as they transition to darker colors. While this effect is visible in the photo, the black gaps would basically be invisible when displaying whites.

One of the reasons people claim 4k is the lowest possible resolution for accurate CRT shaders is that they try to recreate the phosphors, which is totally unnecessary and not something you'd even see unless you're inches from the screen and actively looking for them. The basic effect can be attained at much lower resolutions with tapering scanlines, horizontal blur, and a slight glow.
People fetishize "accuracy" too much.

>> No.8680272

>>8680218
Using the appropriate hardware that looks the best is not fetishizing accuracy. Zoomers don't understand that people play on CRTs because they look great, not because they are accurate. CRT filters are neither accurate nor look good.

Because it smoothes down stuff. If image is formed with undiscorded "raw" pixels, it takes, well, pixelated form with many clearly seen squares. If you use crt or emulation filter, you get a) somewhat rounded "pixels", b) black space between them, which was utilized by some designers, c) some diffusion, which, again, smoothes the borders of sprites/models/etc.
In the end it forms a bit more blurry picture, yet parts of this picture look more like objects they're supposed to be.

I'd say install Retroarch in another directory and copy the new shader folder it creates over to your old folder if you want to "reset" CRT Royale. Or you could just open the shader settings in retroarch (where you fine tune the brightness, contrast etc.) and press your controllers right stick (I think) and it resets it back to its original value.

Also google for some more shaders to mess around with, I use an xm29 shader for retro games and I think it looks quite good but you can find ones that suit you from github and stuff, might even have pictures as well.

The current firmware on mister has options for simulating certain kinds of TV/monitor, but in order not to introduce too much lag heavily processed shaders that would require full frame buffering are not there. Honestly i've been using easymode in retro arch simply because it is close enough to my vague memories (it has been 20 years after all) and doesn't require huge internal resolution multipliers like crt royale does. Does make me yearn for 8k screens to be viable but that is a pipe dream for now since 8k basically means "giant" 40"+ screens (otherwise just stick to 4k at monitor sizes).

Believe it or not, they're actually not the best displays for CRT shaders due to their shitty RGBW subpixel arrangement, which fucks with the phosphor emulation shaders usually employ. Movies and shit, they mog QLED or whatever the fuck for sure, but not in this particular category.

Anyway, what you ideally want is the brightest display you can get your hands on. QLEDs are among the brightest, so you may want to start there. Reason is the brighter the display, they better they can offset the loss in brightness from phosphor emulation and the more convincing the effect will be.

Shaders came into being long before emulators took advantage of them:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shader

Before then, we had CPU-based filters, also known as scalers, since their primary purpose was to provide alternative methods of upscaling in emulators other than the usual nearest neighbor and bilinear interpolation. Once GPUs with programmable shader support became mainstream, however, some emulators began to support them. I believe one of the earliest examples was Pete's OpenGL2 plugin for ePSXe.

It wasn't really until bsnes and RetroArch came around, with their highly advanced shader implementations, that shaders really caught on for emulation, however.

It most likely won't be updated again since its creator faked a suicide for some reason (we know he didn't really do it because his known real name was absent from Japan's list of foreign nationals who died by suicide from the month it was alleged to have transpired).

It still sees updates from time to time, I believe. It's nearly perfect, and valuable from a preservation standpoint, but if you just want to play games, Snes9x is nearly just as good (last I checked, it only has issues with just a couple of games that bsnes does not). I personally use Snes9x over bsnes because the former is much faster and the extra performance can be used for latency-reduction measures like run-ahead.

I love Guest and Easymode so I'm glad I found the right ones. Advanced in particular is supposedly great for games with pre-rendered graphics.

It's interesting how popular Royale is in this board, when the libretro forums seem to have more or less moved on from it and now mostly use Guest's shaders.

Don't forget subpixel layout. The masks used by CRT shaders are often heavily dependent on an RGB layout, and some people have BGR or something else, which can mess the image up.

Maybe I should just get a CRT
They can't be that expensive, right
And surely whatever wizard widget that gets shit on your computer onto your CRT is also cheap

I've yet to be convinced by Venom's Guest. Even at sub-4k Royale seems to have better blending.

Yeah, I only recommend it for people who want a fast shader with a good but not overwhelming amount of options. I much prefer Advanced, though, since GDV hasn't been updated in a while and all the cutting edge shit is done on the Advanced branch now.

Advanced is probably my favorite now. Castlevania looked great with Dr. Venom, which got me into Guest initially.

Is this an LCD grid? It doesn't look like a CRT.

I think he just removed the diffusion that's on by default and called it a day. Guest-Advanced can definitely look better than that, but it needs tweaking

But then again, I usually play with the mask at 100% strength, and everyone always gives me shit over it looking too dark, so what do I know.

I just turned the mask to 11. Is 9 better? Both were recommended to me, but I picked 11 for being brighter.
