What are some worthwhile Game Gear games to play? Feels like most of it is just downgraded ports of Mega Drive games and slightly-better ports of SMS games.

I had a game gear and man, I hated every fucking game I had for it. Gave it to my brother and stuck to GB. Before I could tell the difference between normies and others I noticed all the kids at the playground wanted to see the game gear because it had colors, and I always said "yeah but it doesn't have any good games" while I play FFA or Revenge of the Gator. OFC they all ignored me or though I was jealous.

Took me 20 years and time away from public school to realize normies are a whole massive intrest group and I'm unlike them.

The battery life didn't help either. Nowadays you can just get rechargeables, but back then you were at the mercy of Big Alkaline

Are you really trying to imply that game gear was the normalfag choice when the Gameboy is to this day a generic term for handhelds and had a little game called POKEMON on it

When a kid came back to my small Montessori school after Christmas break with a Game Gear, one of those clip on third party screen magnifiers, and a copy of Mortal Kombat (in color!), it was like a revelation. Instantly he was the coolest kid in school.

Game gear was and still is kino. Gameboy had some fun games too, but it’s really drab and shit with no color - no reason the game gear couldn’t have had better games except devs sucked and Nintendo I think strongarmed a lot of companies into supporting them only

game gear graphics look 16-bit and it really shows how dumb sega was for giving the master system the same size palette as the NES when it had so much more potential. I bet it would've sold twice as much with an even 256 colors.

You probably mean Adventure of Link, and no it isn't; both are pretty lame and the Zelda game at least isn't boring. GAW was objectively better than the original LoZ though, shame they didn't port it to the handheld

I recommend GG Aleste 2. I think it is a fair game which makes it quite fun. It does play like the Genesis and Master System games, but it is designed well for the small screen space of the portable.

Kind of a trick question because you can always argue that the cropped pixel real estate makes every GG port automatically worse. It was definitely a problem when the developers didn't tweak gameplay and level design to compensate for it >>8665887, but it really isn't an universal deal-breaker.

A lot of GG ports are worth playing at the very least as a curiosity: WB3 for example includes a lot of little tweaks, new art like portraits for the shopkeeper/healer etc, and removes the Charm Stone mechanics, which could count as a plus for some.

>WB3 for example includes a lot of little tweaks,
Yeah, it's really weird because Dragon's Curse is arguably closer to the original Master System version than the Game Gear port, which released after WBV:MWIII. In a lot of ways, I feel like the TurboGrafx-16 version is a lot closer to the game the devs really wanted to make. Jap manual even contains a few isolated references to Monster Land so it was still thought of as a sequel despite Hudson's trademark removal.
>new art like portraits for the shopkeeper/healer etc,
I heard these designs were just ripped from the WBV:MWIII NPCs. Also there was no good reason to get rid of the pig, maybe the church palette swap because it's a bit out of place but not entirely.
>and removes the Charm Stone mechanics,
Eh they just needed to rebalance/rethink it in a few places, not throw the baby out with the bathwater.

the latter Japanese rpg's have pretty nice graphics that look a bit like 16 bit graphics because of the large colour pallete.
