So what's the best game for the RDI Halcyon?

Hard mode: choose only one

>> No.866427

I'd say it comes down to either Raiders vs. Chargers or Thayer's Quest, but YMMV.

Half of that console's library was sports games. What shit.

That voice-controlled LaserDisc tech was just too far ahead of its time. It's amazing to realize that titles like Plumbers Don't Wear Ties and Lifeline would've played every bit as well on the Halcyon.

You mean:

Just as shitty

just when I thought I had found out about every console there was this thing pops up. What the hell was it and why have I never heard of it before?

first off... I don't see how that's amazing as they were laser disc games in the first place
second off... why would you want to play those games in the first place.

also I think it not catching on had more to do with it's $2500 price tag than it being ahead of it's time.

It would've been much better, actually, laser disk is superior to CDs to play video.

Why don't video game companies experiment like this any more?!

I'd love to see a new video game console packed to the fucking gills with power, and some bleeding edge tech and sell for $5000.

Build a computer.

Then why play any home consoles then?

The fact that it's one unified box is half the fun.

because selling systems that no ones to buy because of the ridiculously high price is a good way to assure that no one will buy it and people want to... make money... odd concept really

you can easily hook your computer up to your TV these days

Released right before the 83 Crash, the RDI Halcyon was billed a super-advanced computer system, and probably had some good laserdisc tech in it. Either way, the thing was 2500 bucks, the most expensive system ever released, and it got all of two games before the crash removed any existing reasons that people might have bought the platform.

It's one of the rarest US systems simply because it was way too expensive and it sucked. Think about it, for 2500 USD you could probably own every other system on the market in 1983. The only people who would actually buy this thing were probably spoiled rich kids who bought every single new system with their parent's absurd incomes.

Actually, it's not on wikipedia but if you look at some dedicated communities/sites for the Halcyon you will find that it was never released to the public at all. There are very few complete units in existence and it is one of the rarest consoles ever, possibly the rarest.

it was released in 1985 you dweeb

>and it sucked
>a system that talks to you and trys to learn your personality
that was the real draw of the system, the FMV laser disc games were just so there would be a reason for it existing when it launched, there were supposed to be games that took more adventage of the AI later on, as well as automation functionality for household devices and stuff.
