Why is FFVII such a timeless classic?

>> No.8657190

Excellent battle system and lots of well done mini games.

>> No.8657194

>>8657163
It flawlessly combines moods and story beats from a variety of mediums and types of fiction. To add to that, it doesn't fumble mechanically as a traditional JRPG, in that regard being one of the best examples of the genre.

>> No.8657218

It's not, it's aged like shit and has massive tonal clash and a garbage plot.

>> No.8657374

it has really good pacing and very mechanically satisfying combat, even if it's easy. excellent score and art.

the remake throws out literally every one of these things except for the score

>> No.8657382

Compared to a lot of jRPGs even know the random encounter rate is low and the battles fast, doesn't feel like a chore to play. Same for the dialogue and story parts, outside of 1 or 2 areas the exposition doesn't drag the story to a stand still. The story also has mostly good vs evil characters which is easy to get behind, not to say the game doesn't have gray areas but the macro story is a very clear cut good vs evil story. Lastly, the globe trotting aspect of the adventure is still category leading. You're never in one spot long enough to get board and the next area will look almost completely different.

>> No.8657396

It takes itself seriously and the art direction isn't overcomplicated garbage, like you see in FFX and beyond.

>> No.8657507

Please ignore him, games do not age.

A few really good character designs and it was most people's first Final Fantasy.

>> No.8657621

>>8657163
It's not, it's a boring game where you spend the majority of it selecting attack on a menu after waiting for a battle to load and start, and it's so easy that there aren't any strategic considerations or resource management for most of it, which is usually the fun part in those kinds of menu based games.

>> No.8657808

>>8657218
lol, good joke.

>> No.8657829

>>8657621
When was FF7 ever advertised as a brutal strategic gauntlet, leaving you panting and sweating after every encounter

>> No.8657860

>>8657829
What does advertisement have to do with anything? I'm just sayin that there is no fun in slowly walking around, then loading a battle, mindlessly selecting attack, hearing the victory music, repeat for over 30 hours. The story is cool but you have to actually play the game to experience it, and as a game it sucks.

>> No.8657930

>>8657860
This is the same thing people were saying on insertcredit and the neogaf forums twenty years ago. We get it. They're non games. Please go be trite elsewhere. Thank you.

>> No.8657937

>>8657860
Sounds like what you wanted was fewer encounters, which increases "strategic considerations and resource management." That is exactly what the Enemy Away materia does. All releases of FF7 for modern platforms also give you a way to manually throttle your encounter rate.

For the PS1 version, there are difficulty hacks

>> No.8657974

>>8657937
How is reducing the amount of encounters making the gameplay better if the encounters themselves are still tedious? If you just remove the encounters instead of improving them, you're left with a visual novel instead of a game. If you want to make an easy game, it should at least be engaging.

>>8657959
Now that is better, but having to hack the game means it's not a timeless classic.

The minigame in FF7 are bad. Like, horrendously bad. I'm not sure a single one of them is well done.

The main game is excellent and holds up as an RPG but every time it wants you to do a gimmick it's going to be a dramatically worse experience than the rest of the game. The snowboarding is really famous but completely and utterly terrible. It's a good idea with awful execution.

The bike stuff is similar, it's really REALLY bad but a cool enough idea that it's possible to give it a pass. I don't know why the Submarine game even exists. They clearly couldn't focus on making any of these minigames enjoyable with the amount they tried to rush in, they should have refined a single one and left that in there instead.

>> No.8658072

>>8657374
I really dislike how the remake "modernized" stuff like flat screen monitors and smartphones. The old tech of the original is a part of that world, its like adding tech past a steampunk setting in 6.

Imaginative environments with great backgrounds that make your brain fill in blanks.
I haven't played it in years now but I can still remember all the coolest pre-rendered locations I like.
Great music, varied enemy designs, interesting cast, story that has a bit of mystery to it.
There's just a lot to like about it.

There is an enormous popularity gap between Tifa and any other girl of FFVII. There's a pretty big gap between Tifa and any other girl of Final Fantasy period. She exists on another level, like Lara Croft, as a video game sex icon. I think Aerith is hotter but this is just how it is.

>> No.8658247

I will never accept the downgrade from handmade tiles to a low resolution .jpg for a background
resident evil did the same thing, it was simply too massive of a compromise and I couldnt take it seriously
7 is the only FF that I didn't finish for that reason, the city is simply too clownish to navigate, they should have started in an overworld so you didnt have to suffer through that immediately

I tried the hardtype recently. It seemed ok at first, but then I got to the reno boss fight and got utterly destroyed, like not even close to standing a chance. Grinding wasn't really an option either because the enemies take longer to kill and barely give any exp. The reviews for platinum don't sound any better. The idea of making these old rpg's have some challenge sounds cool, but these mods all seem poorly balanced. Does anyone know any difficulty mods for any rpg that are actually fun?

The backgrounds were handmade too, and they look good if you aren't playing the shitty re-release. Also the tilesets are designed to be copy/pasted everywhere, so if anything those are less 'handmade'

>> No.8663461

It's for superfans, so if you want to enjoy it you can probably find strat guides for the materia in your possession.

It's funny, Reno was my first death as a kid. I didn't have a memory card yet, so that's where my game ended.

All of a sudden you had CD quality music, computer animated imagery, an anime plot, and a sci-fi industrial setting. All in one. It's like something said "why do we keep making these RPGs for fucking D&D neckbeards" and fixed it in one release
